Overall forecast is in good shape for today into tonight. Will
need some minor adjustments for warming rate here this morning.
Highs well into the 40s and even low 50s in our south/southeast
look good with a few passing high clouds aloft.

.SHORT TERM...

Today through Tuesday:

Looking at a quiet and dry stretch today and Tuesday as temps
gradually warm ahead of a midweek storm system.

Breezy conditions early this morning will give way to lighter
winds as the pressure gradient relaxes with the exiting surface
low pushing further east and high pressure building across the
Upper Midwest today. Based on how temps trended warmer yesterday
and overnight, went a few degrees warmer today given 925-850mb
temps ranging between 6C-8C degrees based on model RAP soundings.
Bumped highs in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees, but wouldn't
be surprised to maybe even see temps creep a little higher,
especially for areas south of I-94. The exception will be areas
holding onto its snowpack from the weekend in Sauk, Columbia,
Marquette, and Green Lake counties where highs will likely be
closer to the low to mid 40s. Although model soundings and HREF
ensembles prog some higher clouds to move in overnight, the light
winds and drier air mass will likely result in overnight night
temps to fall in the upper 20 to the mid 30s. But if there is more
cloud cover, it could reduced radiational cooling and then temps
would end up a few degrees warmer than forecast.

Otherwise, warmer than normal conditions will continue into
Tuesday as high pressure pushes east and southerly winds become
more prevalent. The influx in moisture with the low-level WAA
will likely result in more cloud cover, but we are still
expecting temps to creep in to upper 40 to low 50s and if there
are few breaks in clouds temps could end up a few degrees warmer.

.LONG TERM...

Tuesday Night through Sunday:

Models are in good agreement with bringing steady warm
air/moisture advection into the area Tuesday night into
Wednesday. Ensembles continue to show moisture and temperatures
on the highest end of climatology pushing into the region. Area
forecast soundings continue to show a saturated boundary layer
under a fairly stout inversion during this period. The
combination of the anomalous moisture/temperatures and the
saturated boundary layer should result in a period of low clouds
and some drizzle/light rain shower chances. May see some light
fog as well in any areas where snow cover is lingering.

Despite the presence of the low clouds/drizzle/light rain
showers, the strength of the warm air/moisture advection and
increasing south winds Wednesday should still allow for record
highs to occur. Ensembles have been very consistent for many days
now with highs into mainly the middle 60s over most of the area.
Will continue to use NBM values in the lower to middle 60s for
highs Wednesday, which is in the 75th to 90th percentile per
Model Certainty. The spread in the forecast range of highs are
rather small, indicating higher confidence for these values to
occur.

The record high for Wednesday at Milwaukee is 55 in 1891, and at
Madison is 52 in 2011. Not sure if the all-time record high for
December at Milwaukee, which is 68, will be reached. Madison will
still get close, with the all-time record high for December of 65
there.

The warm temperatures will linger into Wednesday evening, before
the strong cold front pushes eastward across the area later
Wednesday night. This may allow for record highs to be reached
just after midnight on Thursday for Milwaukee (58 in 1984) and
Madison (57 in 1959).

The strength of the pressure gradient and mixing of strong winds
just off the surface later Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday
night, both ahead of and behind the cold front, may lead to Wind
Advisory gusts to around 40 knots at times. Forecast soundings
toward the lakeshore have some 50 knot gust potential for short
periods of time. Ensembles have been showing solid 40 to 45 knot
gusts for a few days now, and some members have shown higher
values.

Timing of the cold front during the overnight hours may limit any
surface based or elevated CAPE, as will persistent low clouds and
drizzle/showers. Very strong shear will occur, so not much in the
way of CAPE will be needed to bring some gusty winds and hail. SPC
is pessimistic about CAPE Wednesday night, and just has general
thunder in the area for its Day 3 outlook. For now, kept small
thunder chances in forecast for Wednesday night.

Gusty west winds should linger into Thursday, though not as strong
as Wednesday night. Dry slot will scour out any lingering clouds,
with the strong cold air advection bringing falling temperatures.
The cold air advection lingers into Thursday night. This will
bring more seasonal temperatures back to the area, and should
linger into the weekend.

Some uncertainty with precipitation chances Friday into Friday
night, with deterministic models showing a lot of variability with
the low pressure system moving through the region. Kept NBM PoPs
for now.

VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours and beyond. Low
pressure will shift into Ontario today, with high pressure
entering from the northwest. Southwest winds will gradually shift
to the northwest, with gusts between 15 to 20kt from time to time
through the mid afternoon hours. These wind gusts should wane
through the afternoon, with light/variable winds overnight into
Tuesday morning. Winds will become reestablished from the
southeast on Tuesday. Aside from passing high clouds, no
restrictions are expected.

Gusty west to southwesterly winds will continue to diminish
through the day as the pressure gradient relaxes as a weak low
pressure moves across southern Canada this morning and then
quickly followed by high pressure building across the Upper
Midwest through the evening. As the surface high pushes east
across across the Lake Superior Region overnight, winds will vary
by turning more northerly tonight and then southeasterly into
Tuesday. Then a strong low pressure is progged to develop and move
across the Upper Midwest and western Great Lakes Wednesday night.
This midweek system continues to bring a high potential for gale
conditions with a period of storm force winds not out of the
question, especially across the northern half of Lake Michigan. At
the very least, gale headlines are more than likely going to be
needed during this time.
