(Issued 921 PM CST Wed Dec 8 2021)

The going forecast looks on track for tonight and tomorrow. Made
very minor adjustments to hourly PoPs for Thursday morning based
on the latest guidance, otherwise continue to expect a swath of
light snow to move northeast across the area tomorrow. The best
potential for seeing around 1 inch of snow looks to be across
central Wisconsin, roughly from the Dells over to Fond du Lac and
into the Sheboygan area. Elsewhere, continue to anticipate snow
accumulations up to around 0.5 inch. Far southern Wisconsin may
not see much in the way of accumulations, as low-level dry air is
expected to win out and deeper moisture focuses to the north.

There is a very small potential we could see a brief period of
sleet as precipitation initially moves into areas south and west
of Madison, but overall confidence in this occurring is low.
Applying the energy technique, models do show this sleet threat
being more widespread west and south of our area. However, it does
appear that the warm nose aloft will cool as the mid-levels
saturate down once precipitation arrives.

.SHORT TERM...

Tonight through Thursday night:

High clouds will increase tonight ahead of an approaching
shortwave. The wave will roll through during the day Thursday,
bringing a quick shot of light snow to much of the area. Warm air
advection aloft will provide plenty of forcing...so main focus
tomorrow is on moisture availability. A couple models are more
bullish with drier air in the southern forecast area, so have
lower precip chances there. High confidence in snow in the north
given plenty of moisture and forcing. Looks like snow accums
around an inch possible in the north...with lesser amounts to the
south.

The snow will lift through from southwest to northeast during the
morning hours and will exit quickly to the northeast late morning
into the afternoon. Some melting will be possible during the
mid/late afternoon hours as southerly winds bring milder temps to
southern Wisconsin.

.LONG TERM...
(Issued 325 PM CST Wed Dec 8 2021)

Friday through Wednesday:

Low pressure over the southern plains Friday morning will
approach southern Wisconsin during the day, moving through during
the evening and overnight hours. The low will begin to deepen as
it traverses the area, strengthening even more rapidly as it lifts
off to the northeast. This looks like a fairly potent system,
with plenty of moisture and forcing, so widespread precip is
expected. Precip type and resultant snowfall amounts continue to
be the biggest forecast concern with this storm.

Compared to the last day or two, models have generally shifted
back northward with the low track. This puts the axis of heaviest
snowfall north of the forecast area. The GFS and ECMWF ensemble
members from the previous run largely supported this northward
shift. The latest deterministic ECMWF run and newest ensemble
members of both the GFS and ECMWF are showing a slightly more
southern track potential once again. So...some uncertainty remains
with this one. Overall...the picture looks fairly clear at mainly
rain in the southeast forecast area, with mainly snow in the far
northwest. It's the transition areas that have the biggest
uncertainty in precip type and snowfall totals, particularly from
Madison northwestward.

Looking like a fairly low potential for sleet/freezing rain with
the late week system, as temps at the surface warm above and cool
below freezing generally in sync with temps aloft. Thus kept the
forecast generally free of sleet and freezing rain.

Also worth point out that there is a pretty good shot of mid-level
dry air pushing during the day Friday, which could limit precip
amounts in areas near the track of the surface low.

Precip will wind down later Friday night into Saturday morning,
with some snow on the back side of the low possibly swinging
through most of the forecast area. Could even see some very light
accums down to the IL border as the colder air works through. Also
expecting gusty westerly winds to 30-40 mph Saturday behind the
low.

Warmer temps will quickly return early next week under persistent
southerly low level flow. Pretty strong signal for well above
normal temps during the first half of the week, especially towards
mid-week when record highs could be threatened. It's looking dry
for Sun-Tue, with some warm advection and increasing moisture
possibly kicking off some showers by Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Light winds increase in speed around daybreak Thursday, with gusty
south to southeast winds expected during the day. Increasing
southerly winds around 2kft AGL will introduce some LLWS for
KMSN/KJVL early Thursday morning. Elsewhere, these stronger winds
aloft move in around the time wind gusts are expected to increase
Thursday morning. A weak front moves through the region and
switches the wind around to the southwest and west around and
after 00Z Friday.

During the late morning into early afternoon hours on Thursday,
an area of light snow will lift northeast across the area. Did
include mentions of light snow at all terminals, expect KEWN where
low-level dry air looks to be strong enough to hold off any snow
potential at this time. Accumulations will remain light,
generally around or less than 0.5 inch. Furthest north, KSBM will
have the best potential at seeing accumulations approach 1 inch.

High pressure overhead today will bring lighter winds into early
tonight. A broad low pressure system will approach from the west
Thursday, moving through Thursday evening. Southerly winds may
briefly approach gale force over the open waters in the late
morning and afternoon ahead of the low. A Small Craft Advisory
remains in effect for Thursday into Thursday evening.

Low pressure developing in the southern Plains Friday will then
track across southern Lake Michigan early Saturday morning,
exiting the region over Lake Huron as it deepens through Saturday
afternoon. This will likely bring a period of gales across the
lake Saturday behind the passing low.
