A narrow line of convection is finally starting to fill in to our
west, though it doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry to move
into the area. There is also convective development taking place
along an outflow boundary moving into the northern reaches of the
forecast area (Green Lake, Marquette Counties, Fond du Lac
Counties). It's not clear just how far south that outflow will
make it before fizzling out, however.

Overall expectations haven't changed too much for the overnight
hours, with a broken line of thunderstorms moving into the area
late this evening from the west, and pushing east and southeast
through the region after midnight. A brief strong storm or two
will be possible, though widespread severe weather is not
expected. Rain should clear the area by or shortly after sunrise
on Wednesday, with cooler and drier air filtering in from the
north.

Rest of this Afternoon through Wednesday night:

Not seeing much shower development this afternoon other than a few
showers in northern IL. If they persist they could clip portions of
southeast WI. Otherwise, not expecting too much for the rest of the
afternoon, but could still see some spotty diurnally driven showers
and maybe storm or two this afternoon/early evening.

Overall, not too impressed with the set up for any stronger
thunderstorms late this afternoon and into the evening. Although
instability continues to increase across the area to around 1000-
1500 J/kg, especially given the broken ceilings east of Madison,
there continues to be a lack of forcing to trigger convective
initiation ahead of the main cold front. Additionally the
suitable deep layer effective shear remains north and model
soundings are hinting a bit of a warm nose might be limiting
things. That being said, still can not rule a stray stronger storm
or two, especially where there are pockets of 30-35 kt of
effective shear around the WI River Valley late afternoon/early
evening. Additionally with steep low-level lapse rates creeping
toward 7.5 C/km east of I-90, any heavier shower or storm that
happens to develop could produce some gusty winds later this
afternoon as well. However, things are not coming together as well
as they could over southern WI and the better chances remain
north of our area where the upper-level dynamics better align with
the higher shear axis, cold front, and mid-level trough.

Even the latest CAMs are not too enthusiastic about convection,
let alone precip across southern WI until the cold front pushes
through late evening/overnight and by that time our chances for
stronger thunderstorms will have begun to dwindle given the loss
of day heating/instability. Expect the cold front to push through
late evening/overnight and bring some scattered showers mainly
between 8 pm and midnight.

Otherwise, Wednesday is looking drier and cooler as high pressure
builds in behind the front. Winds will be more west to northwesterly
and high temps are expected to only top off in the 70s. Even colder
conditions are expected Wednesday night as more northerly winds
develop and overnight lows are looking to fall into 40s.

.LONG TERM...

Thursday through Friday:

This is shaping up to be a rather raw period, especially Thursday
night into Friday. This isn't so atypical for spring in Wisconsin at
the end of May. Have seen many of these kind of cold rain scenarios
occur around now. So we will see rain chances increase as the day
wears on. An initial mid level wave will kick out ahead of the main
trough. Models are in agreement in cyclogenesis to our south with a
fairly potent low tracking to our south this period. This will place
us in that cool, rainy northern side location. A chilly wind off
those colder lake waters will add a little extra bite as well. The
steadiest rains look to be Thursday afternoon into Friday morning
with lighter and less widespread rain lingering a bit longer. The
low will wrap some rather cool 850/925 temps into the area with
Bufkit soundings showing the rather precarious scenario with some
rather cold air not too far off the deck. Nevertheless it appears
temps remain warm enough to keep this a rain event. Some hints of a
little sleet in the NAM sounding as the system winds down later
Friday.

Saturday through Memorial Day:

High pressure is still looking to give us a nice weekend. Temps will
rebound with more sunshine and easing of the low level thermal trough.
The high appears likely to dominate into Monday as well. So all in
all much better conditions will replace the departed chilly system.

Tuesday:

We should see another system begin to move in this period with
increasing chances of showers or storms. If the GEM and ECMWF
solutions pan out then we will see the dry weather last a bit longer
but for now will leave the init alone and carry some pops.

Thunderstorms are still expected to move into the area late this
evening into the overnight hours, though exact coverage is
somewhat in question. Gusty winds and MVFR to brief IFR conditions
are expected in and around any storms. VFR should prevail outside
of any precipitation. Winds will remain gusty from the southwest
into late evening, before gradually weakening and veering to the
west overnight. Winds will turn northwesterly on Wednesday,
becoming gusty at times during the day. VFR is expected through
the day on Wednesday.

Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 9pm tonight for
gusty southwester winds near shore winds. Then a cold front will
push across the Lake overnight causing a west-northwesterly wind
shift into Wednesday. High pressure will build in behind the front
across Ontario and the Upper Midwest Wednesday and Wednesday
night. Then winds are looking to shift more north and then
northeasterly winds to the lake as a result of a possible backdoor
cold front. Then another low pressure system will track from
central IA to northern IN on Thursday, which will help to keep a
northeasterly component to the wind through the mid to late
portion of the week. Thursday night may then feature some gale
force wind gusts across the southeast parts of the lake, including
the nearshore.
