Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
1225 AM EST Sun Nov 14 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
A reinforcing cold front crosses the area tonight. High pressure
briefly builds back into the area Sunday before shortwave energy
pushes another dry cold front through late Sunday night. High
pressure dominates through midweek before the next cold front
approaches late week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 1010 PM Sat...Front has now crossed the entire CWA and dew
points are now taking another pronounced dip. Temperatures have
not fallen nearly as quickly as anticipated due to the brief
surge in northerly winds behind the boundary, and adjusted
forecast minimums up a degree or so. Frost still looks highly
likely in the early morning hours for far inland counties.
Prev disc...Reinforcing cold front will push through the region
early evening, shifting winds to the NW, crashing low level
thicknesses, and allowing strong high pressure to build into the
region briefly. No precip expected with FROPA given dry airmass
being replaced with a very dry airmass behind the front. With
strong CAA behind the front. dewpoints drop down to the mid to
upper 20s overnight. Overnight lows cool down to the low to mid
30s inland with 40s to around 50 for coastal and soundside
areas. A few far inland locations could touch the freezing point
overnight, but temps are expected to stay just above freezing
for most areas. Frost Advisory has been issued for inland
counties with patchy frost possible for the next tier of
counties before reaching the Inner Banks.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
As of 400 PM Saturday...Upper heights gradually lower as
reinforcing dry shortwave and cold front knocks
thicknesses/heights down some, with temps dropping to below
climo with advancing high pres from the NW. Light Nerly winds
turn more SWerly as the front approaches but remain 5 to 10
mph. Highs should generally reach around 60 for most areas
under clear skies.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 3 AM Sat...Dry and gradually cooling conditions expected
through early next week before a warming trend commences by mid
next week.
Sunday Night...Dry cold front pushes through the area overnight,
increasing cloud coverage briefly before clearing out in the
morning. Lows will be in the 30s interior to 40s coast.
Monday through Tuesday...Yet another stronger shortwave trough
rounds base of longwave Eastern CONUS trough. This period will
bring coldest air of the season yet with hts/thicknesses
dropping to below climo. 13/00Z model suite trended a bit warmer
this period, esp Tuesday, though still expecting highs about
5-10 degrees below avg, with Mon highs generally in the 55-60
degree range, and Tue warming into the lower 60s most locales,
with 50s remaining on the OBX. First freeze of the season
possible for most interior zones, as cool dry high pres builds
in Mon night and settles over the region.
Wednesday through Thursday...Return swrly flow and rapidly
building hts will lead to temps rebounding back above climo,
with afternoon highs Wed and Thu into the 70s, with 60s beaches.
Continued dry high pres will dominate with dry and mostly sunny
skies persisting.
Thursday night through Friday...Next cold front may push through
Thu night or Fri, as most guidance in agreement with another
progressive shortwave passing quickly east through the Great
Lakes region by late week. Kept pops in the non mentionable 20%
range this pd, as disagreement on moisture availability with
this cold front.
&&
.AVIATION /05Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Sunday Night/...
As of 1220 AM Sun...High confidence VFR conditions through the
end of the TAF period with strong high pressure building into
the region behind a passing front. Dry airmass in place along
with light, but persistent N wind overnight will stave off fog
development this morning despite clear skies overhead. High
pressure will move overhead Sunday to keep the airspace clear
with only a few high clouds during the day. Winds shift SWrly as
high shifts offshore Sunday night.
LONG TERM /Sun through Wed/...
As of 3 AM Sat...High pres will dominate through the pd with
VFR under mo clear skies. A period of gusty winds on Monday as a
dry cold front surges through bringing wrly wind gusts around 20
kt.
&&
.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /Through Sat night/...
As of 400 PM Saturday...Reinforcing cold front expected to push
through the region tonight. WSWerly winds 10-15 kts ahead of
the frontal boundary. FROPA expected just before sunset this
evening with winds shifting NW and gusting to 25 kts behind the
front, bringing a few hours of SCA conditions across coastal
waters along with the tidewaters. Winds diminish after the
initial surge of CAA after midnight. Seas 3-4 ft will jump up to
around 5 ft behind the front before dropping back down prior to
sunrise.
LONG TERM /Sun through Wed/...
As of 3 AM Sat...A period of SCA wind gusts Monday as
reinforcing surge of cold air moves in with dry frontal passage.
Winds will gust upwards of 25-30 kt Monday into early evening.
High pres builds in Tue into Wed with benign marine conditions.
