What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Newport/Morehead City, NC wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Nov 7, 3:18 PM EST, 3 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Nov 7, 3:18 PM EST, 3 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
318 PM EST Sun Nov 7 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong coastal storm will slowly begin to depart the region
tonight although impacts will linger for the next few days as
high pressure builds in from the west. The next cold front will
approach the area Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 300 PM Sun...999 mb surface low continues to churn a few
hundred miles south of Cape Hatteras late this afternoon with an
area of weak upper level divergence over the eastern Carolinas
supporting broken to overcast cloud cover, although shower
activity is very spotty thanks to PWATs an inch or less per SPC
mesoanalysis. Despite radar returns over the CWA very few if any
terminals are reporting precipitation. The surface low will
slowly lift out of the region as the upper trough swings out to
sea, taking deeper moisture and cloud cover with it overnight
and allowing high pressure to build in from the west.

Pressure gradient will remain tight despite clearing skies
allowing windy conditions to continue overnight. The High Wind
Warnings were dropped this afternoon and replaced with Wind
Advisories primarily for the Outer Banks, while headlines along
the Crystal Coast were dropped. Gusts up to 50 mph are still
likely through midnight especially for Hatteras and Ocracoke
Islands.

Sizable gradient in low temperatures tonight, with inland
locales able to cool more efficiently with clearing skies but
higher winds and lingering overcast conditions keeping
conditions much milder. Lows range from around 40 west of
Highway 17 to mid 50s for the beaches. With winds remaining up
all night, wind chills could dip to around freezing by daybreak.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY/...
As of 310 PM Mon...Surface low continues its journey offshore
with high pressure building in from the west. Clear skies will
prevail apart from the immediate Outer Banks thanks to
subsidence aloft. Confidence has increased with the wind
forecast, with hi-res and global models consolidating around a
more persistent 25-35 mph wind forecast along the coast.
Therefore, a breezy day remains in the cards with highs slightly
below normal in the mid to upper 60s, to low 60s for OBX.

The higher winds will keep the coastal flooding threat elevated
at least into tomorrow...see the TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING section
for further details.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 430 AM Sun...High pressure building in from the west
dominates Tuesday and Wednesday. Unsettled weather returns late
week as a cold front approaches the area, potentially lingering
into the weekend.

Tuesday through Thursday...Surface high pressure slowly passes
overhead Tuesday and Wednesday under strong mid-level riding,
keeping a dry forecast in place. Well above normal highs, with
efficient radiational cooling at night.

The high slides offshore Thursday, with low level moisture slowly
increasing through the day. However, the mid-level ridging persists,
precluding any rain threat and keeping above normal temps in
place with increasing humidity.

Friday into the weekend...An occluding cold front will approach
the area Friday, though it is likely to stall over or near the
area as the parent low retrogrades over the Northern Plains and
the upper air pattern remains static locally. Pre-frontal low
level moisture convergence looks sufficient to justify
continuing the chance of showers Friday. A shortwave approaching
Saturday could then develop a wave within the stalled front,
keeping POPs in the forecast into the weekend.

&&

.AVIATION /20Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Monday/...

As of 1 PM Sunday...

MVFR conditions have filtered into much of the area outside of
ISO this afternoon as widely scattered showers associated with
a nearby coastal low persist today. These conditions will
continue over the next few hours with MVFR conditions lasting
the longest across EWN. Some IFR conditions are currently noted
along the Outer Banks near Hatteras where the heaviest shower
activity is noted. As we get into the evening hours VFR
conditions will then overspread eastern North Carolina from
west to east as the aforementioned coastal low slowly begins to
pull away from NC. In addition to the shower activity the
coastal low will bring gusty winds to the region with widespread
20-30 knot northerly wind gusts forecast into this evening. The
strong winds will bring a cross-wind component at PGV runway
08R/26L through this afternoon.

LONG TERM /Monday through Friday/...
As of 430 AM Sun...VFR prevails through the extended period.
Patchy shallow fog possible Tuesday and Wednesday nights as
very efficient radiational cooling will occur.

&&

.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /Tonight and Tomorrow/...
As of 315 PM Sun...Conditions remain exceptionally poor over the
waters this afternoon as surface low spins a few hundred miles
south of Cape Hatteras. N to NE winds of 25-35 kt continue
across all waters with gusts to 45 kt, and winds are expected to
only slowly subside through tonight and tomorrow as low lifts
out to sea but high pressure building in from the west keeps
pressure gradient pinched. Seas are currently 10-15 feet for
northern and central waters, 6-8 feet for nearshore southern
waters and are expected to slowly fall through the near term
period as winds gradually subside.

Main change this afternoon was to drop all Storm headlines and
replace with Gales, although a few isolated gusts to 50 kt are
still possible closer to the Gulf Stream. Also downgraded
Pamlico/Pungo rivers to SCA. Remaining headlines stay intact
with poor boating conditions expected to last well through the
week particularly for coastal waters.

LONG TERM /Monday through Friday/...
As of 430 AM Sun...High pressure building in from the west
brings mainly light to moderate winds Tuesday and Wednesday,
with winds becoming SE and beginning to increase through the day
on Thursday as high pressure shifts offshore.

Large and hazardous seas continue at least north of Cape Lookout
into Tuesday as backswell from the slowly departing low
continues to impact the local waters. 3-5 ft seas then prevail
Wednesday and Thursday before winds and seas begin to increase
again ahead of an approaching cold front.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 320 PM Sun...Perigean spring tides and strong NE
(becoming N) winds will continue to bring coastal flooding and
ocean overwash issues into early next week. Along the Outer
Banks, ocean overwash will be present to varying degrees for
the next several high tides as dunes have become compromised.
Inundation of beachfront road and properties is expected,
especially along the most vulnerable stretches from Cape
Hatteras to Oregon Inlet. The potential for overwash continues
for the next several days as swell remains elevated and strong
winds only gradually diminish. Elevated astro tide levels are
also bringing minor to moderate flooding along the Crystal
Coast, though the overwash threat is much less south of Cape
Lookout.

Additionally, strong winds into tomorrow will continue the
threat of significant coastal flooding for areas adjacent to the
southern Pamlico Sound. Threat for 2-4 ft of inundation
continues for Downeast Carteret County and southern Craven
County today, shift toward the soundside OBX south of Cape
Hatteras tonight into Monday morning as wind shift more N. Minor
flooding (1-2 ft agl) is also possible on the north side of the
Neuse River to the mouth of the Pamlico Sound late this
afternoon into tonight. Water levels on the sound will subside
as winds diminish later tomorrow and tomorrow night.
