.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build into the area through mid-week as a
coastal low lifts to the northeast this morning. A large low
pressure system will affect the region late Thursday into the
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...
As of 945 PM Tuesday...Only minor adjustments to hourly T grids
this update as the forecast remains on track. Periods of gusty
winds, albeit slightly lower strength that the winds we
experienced this evening/tonight, at the SFC expected in waves
as bands of higher vorticity work over the area spinning around
the Low offshore to the northeast.

Previous Discussion...
As of 345 PM Tuesday...An upper low will slide off the Mid-
Atlantic coast tonight and will become vertically stacked with
strong low pressure off the New England coast. A vort lobe
pivoting through the upper low will bring tightening pressure
gradients early this evening which will bring gusty WNW winds
across the region overnight, especially along the coast. See
coastal flood section for potential concerns tonight as well as
later in the week. Generally clear skies expected tonight with
Cu mostly dissipating after sunset, but lower clouds may move
back into NE sections late tonight as moisture wraps around the
low pressure system off the New England coast. Lows tonight
expected in the mid 40s inland to mid 50s coast.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
As of 400 PM Tuesday...Vertically stacked low pressure continues
off the New England coast Wednesday morning but will begin to
move farther offshore in the afternoon with high pressure and
upper ridging build in from the west. Breezy conditions continue
in the morning but gradients slowly relax through the day with
gusts diminishing through the day. Lower clouds will linger
along NE sections but otherwise expect mostly sunny skies. Highs
expected around 70 most locations but will likely hold in the
mid to upper 60s NE sections where clouds expected to persist.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 3 AM Tue...Active weather pattern through the first part
of the period with troughing generally persisting over the
eastern US and large low pressure system impacting the area late
week. High pressure will build over the area Sunday into early
next week.

Wednesday night through Saturday...Strong low pressure will
continue to deepen off the Mid-Atlantic/NE coast Wed, slowly
pushing eastward late Wed and Wed night. Breezy NW winds
continue, esp along the coast as CAA continues. Low level
thickness values support highs in the upper 60s to low 70s Wed.
Upper ridge axis slides east of the area Thursday and deep
moisture advection begins. Stacked low pressure over the
Tennessee Valley will slowly work eastward, but destabilization
will be slow, with the first part of Thursday remaining mostly
dry with precip chances increasing through the afternoon. A warm
front is expected to lift through the area Thursday night,
signaling the return of appreciable rain chances. Main concern
is the potential for isolated strong to svr storms and moderate
to locally heavy rain Thu night and early Fri morning. Still not
looking at much instability, but should be enough shear and low
level helicity in place to potentially warrant a low end
damaging wind gust and/or iso tornado threat. Will continue to
monitor over the coming days. Increased pops to categorical.
Temps near normal during the day, with an increasingly warm and
humid airmass filling in Thursday night. Stacked low pressure
lifts across the southern Appalachians toward the Mid-Atlantic
Friday into the weekend. Precip expected to become more
scattered Friday through Friday evening as an occluding cold
front crosses the area. However, at least low end chance POPs
will continue Sat to account for the close proximity of the
strong dynamic forcing associated with the stacked low.

Sunday through Tuesday...Low pressure will continues to lift
through the NE US as trough axis shifts off the east coast.
Upper flow becomes more zonal Sunday as sfc high pressure builds
in from the WNW. Upper ridge begins to build across the SE Mon
as next frontal system approaches from the west. Drier and
cooler wx expected. Near normal temps expected with highs in the
upper 60s to low 70s, and overnight lows mid/upper 40s inland
and 50s along the coast.

SHORT TERM /through Wednesday/...
As of 730 PM Tuesday...VFR conditions will prevail at the
terminals through the TAF period with generally clear skies.
Gusty WNW winds up to 20-25 kt will be possible through this
evening with tightening gradients as a vort max moves through
the area. Guidance has backed off slightly with the strength of
the low level passing overhead tonight and is keeping conditions
below low level wind shear thresholds. Gusts across regional
terminals are expected to die down after midnight local, but
breezy conditions persist through the night. Tomorrow, periods
of MVFR CIGs possible along NE coastal sections where greater
low level moisture from low pressure off the Mid- Atlantic coast
will reside, spotty fair-weather CU between FL040-050 possible
at TAF sites. WNW around 7 to 10 kts through the day with gusts

As of 950 PM Tuesday...No changes in the near term as the
forecast remains on track. SCAs will be issued with the next
forecast package as Gales begin coming down starting at midnight
for inland rivers first.

Previous Discussion...
As of 415 PM Tuesday...An upper low over the northern Mid-
Atlantic states will slide offshore and become vertically
stacked with low pressure off New England tonight. A vort lobe
pivoting through the upper low will serve to tighten gradients
across the region this evening bringing Gale Force conditions to
the waters. Winds are expected to quickly ramp up early this
evening, then gradients slowly relax late tonight into
Wednesday. Have raised a Gale Warning for the remaining waters
as several hours with gusts around 35-40 kt will be possible
even across the inland rivers and northern sounds. Seas are
expected to build up to 6-9 ft north of Cape Hatteras and 5-8 ft
south tonight, then subside a foot or two Wednesday as winds
relax some.

LONG TERM /Wednesday through Saturday/...
As of 3 AM Tue...Low pressure will continue to deepen off the
Mid-Atlantic and NE coast Wed, gradually pushing eastward Wed
night. Strong NW winds slowly diminishing Wed night and Thu as
ridging settles over the area. Breezy winds expected again late
week with a cold front that will cross the area late Friday and
Saturday. SE winds will increase to 15-25 kt with a warm front
Thu night, becoming SSW 15-25 kt Fri ahead of the cold front.
Moderate WSW winds 15-20 kt will continue Sat.

Seas peaking around 6-9 ft Wed night, highest north of Ocracoke,
then likely remaining elevated through much of the rest of the
week as persistent N to NE swell impacts the waters mainly north
and east of Cape Lookout. Dangerous seas 6-10 ft expected again
late week with the next system.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 430 PM Tuesday...Gale force WNW winds tonight will bring
minor water level rises across the sound-side OBX tonight with
up to 1-2 ft above normal possible.

In addition, wave run up due to deepening offshore low pressure
combined with strong NNW winds will bring the potential for
rough surf, minor beach erosion and ocean overwash tonight
through late week north of Cape Hatteras. Offshore winds and
lower astronomical tides with the quarter moon will help to ease
the threat a bit tonight and expect conditions to remain below
High Surf Advisory criteria. Larger swells arrive Wednesday
night and especially Thursday night into Friday, which is
expected to be combined with strong onshore flow, providing a
greater threat for high surf conditions.
