What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Newport/Morehead City, NC wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Oct 8, 10:30 AM EDT, 5 hours 5 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Oct 8, 10:30 AM EDT, 5 hours 5 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
1030 AM EDT Fri Oct 8 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain across the Mid Atlantic and Northeast,
while a coastal trough evolves into a slow moving tropical or
subtropical low pressure area off the Carolina coast through
early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /Through Today/...
As of 1030 AM Fri...No big changes with am fcst update. Still
expecting an area of sct showers with a few embedded ts to
develop mainly this afternoon. Until that happens, some sct
showers may graze coastal counties through early afternoon.

Prev discussion...As of 630 AM Fri...Very little precipitation
being detected on radar at the moment with an area of showers
vicinity of the Gulfstream north of Cape Lookout. This will be
changing as scattered showers are expected to develop late this
morning through this afternoon along the coast, and scattered to
numerous showers will move into the coastal plain by early
evening. Weak low pressure will be developing today along the
coastal trough off the SC coast and contribute to the increased
shower chances along the coast, while an approaching mid level
trough and diurnal heating will be responsible for the
showers/thunderstorms moving into the coastal plain late today.
With PW values continuing AOA 1.75", torrential downpours will
occur in the heaviest showers, especially with the activity
forecast to move into the coastal plain. High temps tempered a
bit due to the cloud cover and showers, with readings generally
upper 70s to to low 80s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /Tonight/...
As of 330 AM Fri...As the mid level trough moves into the
Carolinas, it is forecast to intercept the weak low off the SC
coast tonight resulting in modest deepening and drawing the low
northward to be off the NC coast overnight. This will result in
widespread showers/possible thunderstorms tonight with
torrential downpours. Will increase PoPs to likely all areas by
12z Sat. Lows will continue to be mild for October in the mid to
upper 60s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 330 AM Friday...Increasingly unsettled conditions through
the weekend as deep moisture remains in place. Upper level
troughing overhead and a coastal trough/weak low with potential
for further deepening slowly moves up the coast.

Weekend...Slightly negatively tilted upper trough extends
SSEward from the Great Lakes down to Florida as ridging
increases over Mexico/SWern TX. The trough becomes more N-S
oriented as it moves overhead early Sunday. At the SFC, subtle
model differences in the depth, location, and progression of the
coastal trough/low still exist. Those differences impact the
conditions locally, making for a less confident forecast. NHC
has the chance of tropical development for the low in 2/5 days
relatively low (20%/30% respectively). Regardless of tropical
development likelihood, the area will receive mostly onshore
flow in the north in a very moist air mass with PWats at the
lowest 1.75inches inland and AoA 2inches along the coast.
Showers and isolated tstorms push ashore through the day and
with better upper level support, heavy downpours become
possible. With so much uncertainty of the exact progression of
the low, all outcomes have to be considered. Should the NAM
solution of a deepening low coming ashore along our southern CWA
border come to fruition, increased shear and veering winds
through the day make the development of cells with low level
rotation possible.

Ample cloud coverage and precip cooling keeps highs in the
upper 70s. Very muggy mornings with lows in the mid 60s.

Next Week...Vast model differences make details of early next
week murky. However, weak ridging is expected to build ahead of
an upper low breaking off of a deep trough over western CONUS
once the SFC low finally elongates and moves offshore. Trends
will be drier and warmer as the high pressure increases over the
area lasting through most of the week. Back to highs in the low
80s through most of the week

&&

.AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Tonight/...
As of 630 AM Fri...Current widespread IFR ceilings will persist
through mid to late morning before lifting to MVFR, and
eventually VFR by mid afternoon. Ceilings again will lower this
evening becoming MVFR by 3Z and IFR by 6Z. Showers will become
scattered to numerous late today then continue through the night
with occasional MVFR-IFR visibilities.

LONG TERM /Saturday through Tuesday/...
As of 350 AM Friday...Increasing low level moisture advection
with onshore flow will bring increasing shower/tstorm chances
and temporary flight restrictions through the weekend as a SFC
low meanders offshore. Conditions remain favorable for morning
fog and/or stratus until the SFC low elongates and moves
offshore with high pressure filling the area late in the period.

&&

.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /through Tonight/...
As of 630 AM Fri...The marine forecast will become increasingly
complex with hazardous conditions expected to develop on
Saturday and continue into early next week as an area of low
pressure meanders off/along the NC coast. Today expecting the low
to develop along a coastal trough off the SC coast then lift
north to be off the southern NC coast by early Sat. NE winds
10-15 kt today will increase to 15 to 20 kt overnight. Bumpy
short period 3-5 ft seas will persist through tonight.

LONG TERM /Saturday through Tuesday/...
As of 410 AM Friday...Generally NE/Eerly winds 10 to 15 kts
with gusts up to 20kts and 3-5 ft seas as coastal trough/low to
the south continues to slowly move Nward. As the low gets
closer to the area, the gradient tightens with weak high
pressure to the north, increasing windspeeds up to 15 to 20 kts
with gusts to 25kts. Seas build with increasing winds up to 5
to 7ft for coastal waters by midday Saturday, making wind and
sea driven SCA likely for coastal waters. Sunday, winds over the
Pamlico Sound may reach SCA criteria with gusts of 25kts. There
is still a good amount of uncertainty within the models. A wide
spread of depth and precise location of the low exists, all of
which will greatly affect wind/sea forecasts so we have opted
to hold off on the issuance of SCAs at this time. Heightened
seas linger through the weekend into the early week for northern
waters. Winds eventually turn more Nerly and slightly calm back
to 10 to 15kts with seas subsiding from S to N. Southern waters
back to 2 to 4 ft early Monday, but 4 to 6 ft lingers north of
Ocracoke Inlet through Monday night.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 630 AM Fri...Elevated water levels due to King Tides
combined with a developing low pressure system offshore
producing persistent onshore northeasterly winds could result in
minor sound side and ocean side coastal flooding of low lying
areas during times of high tide Friday through early next week.
