Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 1051 PM EST Wed Feb 10 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Weak low pressure will move northeast along the Carolina coast late tonight and Thursday. A series of several more weak lows will track near the coast Friday and into early next week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/... As of 1030 PM Wednesday...The 925 mb warm front is cross the area late this evening, with weak isentropic lift of the persistent shallow ridging building in from the north limiting precip to very light rain/sprinkles/virga. No significant changes made with the late evening update. Previous Discussion...Broad low level moisture advection ahead of a cold front well back to the west will ensue overnight, with the moisture first arriving within the lower levels this evening, the deepening into the mid-levels overnight. A very weak and shallow low will approaching from the south overnight, passing offshore through the morning, bringing increased boundary layer moisture advection and light rain/drizzle ahead of it. QPF totals should be quite light given the lack of deep moisture, only a few hundreths of an inch at best. Low temperatures for most areas should fall between 40 and 45 degrees. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/... As of 8 PM Wednesday...Shower activity will focus along the Inner and Outer Banks in the morning as the low center passes south of the Capes. Again, kept PoPs mostly capped in the high chance range with QPF totals being quite light. Very shallow and weak CAA occurs in the wake of the low, but ample low level moisture advection occurs just above it, and temps will climb well above normal despite cloudy skies as the WAA will still mix to the surface despite light N to NE winds. Very low stratus will occasionally build to the surface as fog, and drizzle is possible mainly in the morning. Additionally, the warm and humid airmass/light winds will make sea fog possible, which could move ashore along coastal areas at times. Temps south of New Bern pushing into the lower 60s, but cooler north with highs only in the low to mid 50s. Winds increase from the N/NE in the afternoon the the low strengthens off the Mid- Atlantic coast. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... As of 315 AM Wed...An active pattern will persist through the long term as a series of systems pushes across the area. Thursday Night and Friday...A train of disorganized coastal lows will ride eastward along a stationary boundary lingering just offshore the Crystal Coast Thursday Night and Friday. Stronger CAA will kick in overnight Thu into Friday morning as Nrly winds pick up, especially along the OBX, as another low pressure system develops across the SE and rides NE along the stationary boundary. Better chc for precip with this system with stronger mid level forcing in place. Expecting highs only to reach the low to mid 40s across the CWA with a few low 50s along the southern OBX areas that may not see the backdoor front. Saturday through Sunday...Modest mid-level trough axis over the Midwest trailing into the Mid Atlantic will swing across the region Sat, spinning up yet another low pressure system across the southeast. System will become better organized Sat aftn as it reaches the Carolina coastal waters. Widespread rain expected all day Sat as the system moves through the region. Models showing some CAD occuring across the Piedmont Triad region, which will keep temps cool in central NC during the aftn and provide some ptype issues there. Unlikely at this time for Eastern NC to see much ptype issues with this storm, but certainly keeping an eye on the latest model depictions of the CAD for this event. Inner coastal plains will have limited temps as well with low 40s expected far inland and low 50s along the coast. Low will move out of the region Sat night into Sun morning, when we could see a quick break in shower activity before picking back up again late aftn/evening. Robust mid-level shortwave will lift across the southeast and churn up yet another low for Sun night into Monday morning, providing another shot of rain. Washington's Birthday through Tuesday...Coastal low will continue pushing offshore Monday morning while high pressure attempts to build in from the north, though not to much avail. A few light showers remain possible Mon morning through the aftn as the coastal low lifts out before a much stronger storm system marches across the Southeast and into our region Mon night into Tuesday. Global models differing quite substantially with the evolution of this system. Much stronger mid- level forcing expected Mon aftn into Tue as a well- defined trough digs across the southeast, fueling this stronger low. ECMWF shows a more inland solution, with the low tracking along Appalachia. Canadian is opting for a stronger coastal low component while the GFS is more of a double-barrel inland/coastal low solution. Strong CAD is progged to occur across the Mid Atlantic, providing many locations with ptype issues. At the moment, models are not indicating any notable ptype concerns for Eastern NC, but must be monitored closely. A stronger Arctic high across the Northeast or a low that tracks closer to the coast would inc chances for ptype issues across our area. && .AVIATION /04Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Short Term /through Thursday/... As of 715 PM Wednesday...Weak low pressure will pass off the coast overnight though tomorrow morning, bringing prolonged and complex flight restrictions. MVFR prevails through the evening as the boundary layer is slow to saturate, but low level WAA late brings IFR ceilings across the area with light rain and drizzle reducing visibilities at times. Then, Thursday morning, very shallow CAA will develop, lowering ceilings further, possibly to LIFR levels, with stratus building to the surface as fog at times. Conditions slowly improve through the late morning hours and afternoon as mixing improves. Long Term /Thursday Night through Monday/... As of 355 AM Wed...Numerous rounds of low pressure systems are expected to train across the region through the long term, bringing extended periods of sub-VFR conditions through Monday. && .MARINE... Short Term /Tonight and Thursday/... As of 10 PM Wednesday...A coastal trough is lingering just offshore, with light northeast winds to it's west over most marine areas this evening, and moderate westerly winds to the east of the trough. A weak low/wave will move along this trough through the morning, causing the trough axis to meander overnight, with abrupt wind shifts from light NE to moderate W possible for waterways bordering the OBX. Moderate to breezy NE winds emerge later Thursday as the low deepens quickly off the Mid-Atlantic coast. 3 to 5 ft seas generally persist tonight through Thursday. Low level warm air advection will occur late tonight through midday Thursday, with dew points climbing into the lower to mid 50s along the coastal waters near and south of the Northern Outer Banks Thursday. Sea fog is possible given water temps in the upper 40s to near 50 for this area, but wind direction/strength is uncertain, so coverage of sea fog is difficult to nail down. Long Term /Thursday Night through Monday/... As of 355 PM Wed...Unsettled weather expected through the weekend. A stationary boundary settled across the southern waters will allow numerous low pressure systems to train along the boundary. Coastal low will pass through the southern and central waters Thu evening and usher in a strong backdoor cold front Thu night into Fri. SCA conditions likely for seas by late Thursday over the northern two legs, then as the front roars into the region with winds gusting from the N at 25-30 kts and seas 5-7.
