Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC 1049 AM EST Fri Dec 17 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Strong high pressure ridging south of the area remains in control today into the weekend. A cold front will cross through Eastern NC Sunday morning, with colder high pressure building in behind it. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... As of 1015 AM Fri...Area of stratus continue to slowly advance toward the coast but is thinning and lifting with daytime heating. The coastal plain could still see stcu into the afternoon bringing periods of mostly cloudy to overcast skies with plenty of low level moisture in place. Update mainly captures sky trends. T/Td in good shape with temps warming into the 70s and approaching record temps most areas, while immediate coastal sections should see highs in the mid to upper 60s. Previous Discussion...A cold front will remain quasi-stationary north and west of the area today, with high pressure centered offshore ridging to our south. A large field of stratus will build into easter NC from the south and west early this morning, overspreading much of the area through the post-dawn hours before slowly scattering out through the rest of the morning into early afternoon with increased mixing. Scattered low clouds and cirrus then persist through the rest of the day, with mid level subsidence ensuring that a mainly dry forecast continues. Have lowered the high temp forecast a degree or two based on the expectation of more cloud cover and slower AM warming - through highs could still reach within several degrees of records in spots that clear for a couple hours this afternoon (see CLIMATE section below). && .SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/... As of 3 AM Fri...Low pressure develops over the southern Missouri Valley tonight, with high pressure persisting offshore. Increased pressure gradient along the Southeast coast brings improved advection of low level moisture with origins in the Gulf of Mexico. This Increased low level moisture will develop low stratus over the course of the night, with patchy to areas of fog possible late as this stratus builds toward the surface. Additionally, marine fog could develop and impact coastal areas overnight as the airmass with Td values around 60 advects over waters in the lower to mid 50s. While this fog could be dense at times, have keep a more optimistic official forecast for now given uncertainty owing to the increased westerly component of the BL flow overnight and the historically poor performance of guidance at predicting marine fog. Mild temps overnight given mostly overcast skies, with lows in the upper 50s expected for most. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 310 AM Fri...Very warm and quiet conditions will continue through tomorrow with near record warmth again possible on Saturday. A strong cold front will cross the area Sunday with rain likely, followed by colder high pressure building in behind it. A coastal storm may impact the area by early to mid next week but uncertainty remains. Saturday and Sunday...The long term period opens with a shortwave trough lifting across the Midwest into New England on Saturday, with an associated surface low quickly traversing across the OH River Valley and mid-Atlantic through the day. An attendant cold front will sweep towards eastern NC late Sat while high pressure lingers well offshore. The best forcing with this feature will remain displaced to our north and initially the frontal passage will likely only promote a few scattered showers. The more (relatively) pronounced precipitation will be behind the front on Sunday with increasing mid- level Fgen and DPVA maximizing late in the day. Total QPF could total half to three quarters of an inch (a few isolated higher amounts along OBX where some convection could come into play courtesy of the Gulf Stream). Temperature curve will be non-diurnal over the weekend. Record highs will again be tested on Saturday, but temperatures will fall little overnight with persistent SW flow and WAA aloft. Sunday's highs will likely be realized at or shortly after midnight as temperatures will crater behind the front and CAA commences. By Monday morning lows will have returned to more seasonal norms in the 30s. Monday through Thursday...High pressure builds in behind the front on Monday reinforcing cooler but clear conditions. Uncertainty remains from Tues beyond, with the feature in question being a well- pronounced shortwave/closed low expected to traverse the southern CONUS late Monday into Tuesday. Surface cyclogenesis is forecast over the Gulf of Mexico late Mon night into Tuesday, with the low lifting off the SE coast and off the coast of NC. Questions remain with both the intensity of the low and how close to tracks to the coast. The Euro, which for the past few forecasts had favored a more offshore solution, has now shifted much closer to the coast more in line with the GFS, although it is faster by about 12 hours. Raised PoPs slightly given this recent trend, but a close watch will need to be kept on this system given the potential for coastal hazards. && .AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... SHORT TERM /through Tonight/... As of 1045 AM Fri...IFR status deck continues to slow advance toward the coast but is thinning and gradually lifting with daytime heating. Plenty of low level moisture remains and MVFR stcu is redeveloping to the west across the coastal plain. Currently OAJ and EWN have IFR cigs but should lift to MVFR soon. Sct-bkn MVFR cigs possible at times through much the afternoon. Increasing low level moisture advection will likely bring IFR to LIFR stratus and patchy fog overnight tonight at all terminals. LONG TERM /Saturday through Tuesday... As of 310 AM Fri...Flight conditions deteriorate starting late Saturday night into Sunday as a strong cold front crosses the terminals from west to east. Of particular concern will be low cigs, particularly Sunday behind the front, and a rapid wind shift early Sunday from southwesterly to northerly with gusts up to 20-25 kt during the day Sunday. High pressure builds back in Monday with VFR conditions likely before attention turns to a potential coastal storm late Tuesday. Extent of aviation impacts remain unclear given uncertainties over storm's track and timing. && .MARINE... SHORT TERM /through Tonight/... As of 1045 AM Fri...Seas at Diamond buoy have been below 6 feet for the past couple of hours with gusts aob 20 kt for even longer, so have dropped the SCA for the waters from Hatteras to Ocracoke. High pressure continues to ridge south of the area, with WSW to SW winds around 10 to 15 kt generally persisting today. This evening and tonight, the remnants of a cold front deteriorating over NE NC/SE VA could bring light and variable winds north of Oregon Inlet, which moderate WSW to SW winds continue south of Oregon Inlet as the gradient tightens but cool water inhibits mixing of winds to the surface. Breezy 15-20 kt winds, occasionally gusting to 25 kt area possible today and tonight over the Gulf Stream - which has pushed closer to Cape Hatteras that normal, about 10-15 nm offshore. Seas persist around 3-5 ft today and tonight in medium period SE swell. An additional concern overnight is that the increasingly humid airmass (Td near or over 60F) will bring sea fog over the cooler shelf and inshore waters. This fog could be dense at times, especially as we move into the early morning hours Saturday. LONG TERM /Saturday through Tuesday/... As of 320 AM Fri...Marine conditions deteriorate late Sat night as cold front approaches the waters. SW winds, primarily offshore, increase to 15-20 kt with gusts to 25 kt nudging seas to 5-6 feet. Winds quickly shift to northerly as front races across the waters Sun morning, increasing to 25-30 kt both offshore and over the sounds. Gale conditions are possible for offshore zones. Seas, particularly for northern and central waters, build to 6-8 feet late Sun into Monday. High pressure builds into the area from the north Monday allowing northeasterly winds to ease somewhat Monday into Tuesday, eventually veering easterly and becoming light.
