Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
324 PM EST Sat Nov 27 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure building in from the west lasts through the
weekend. A dry cold front will push through the area Sunday
night. Mostly dry conditions continue next week as high pressure
remains to the south, with a series of shortwaves passing
nearby.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 315 PM Sat...Somewhat complex upper level patter this
afternoon with two features of note. The first, a weak shortwave
diving across the Midwest, is driving weak cyclogenesis over
the western Great Lakes with a shield of mid and high level
clouds expected to cross the mid-Atlantic tonight. The second
feature, a closed low over western TX, is expected to race
across the Gulf States through the short term although it will
have very little moisture to work with.
Ultimately, the most consequence these features will have will
be a slight increase in clouds. For tonight, high pressure
overhead will slide offshore with light winds backing
southwesterly. Clouds from the Great Lakes low will likely
skirt northern portions of our CWA with more cirrus building in
from the south with the TX low closer to day break. Temperatures
should be able to drop a healthy amount shortly after sunset
tonight. The exception will be the Outer Banks, which will see a
non-diurnal trend as southwesterly winds increase. Lows tonight
in the mid to upper 30s, with more well sheltered areas nearing
freezing.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY/...
As of 320 PM Sat...Clouds continue to increase from south to
north as the surface low to the north and attendant cold front
sink towards the Carolinas. Low-levels remain very dry and the
front will not bring any appreciable precip. Some coastal
showers may blossom late offshore in association with a
sharpening coastal trough. With southwest winds and 925mb temps
rising to 6-8 C, nudged forecast highs into the low to mid 60s
for most areas.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 330 AM Saturday...A dry and cool regime will reign for the
long term period.
Sunday night through the middle of next week...Troughing
prevails over the eastern US for the first half of next week,
with a shortwave crossing the area Sunday night into Monday,
another early Tuesday, then another late Wed night into early
Thursday. At the surface, ridging generally persists over the
western Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf Coast, limiting advection of
moisture into the Carolinas and keeping mainly a westerly
component in the low level flow. A weak and moisture-starved
cold front will cross the area late Sunday into Monday.
Thereafter, CAA and NW to W flow persists through late week,
with dry conditions. Below normal temperatures to start the week
then a gradually moderating trend for temps as the week
progresses. Temps build back near climatology by Wednesday then
a few degrees above climo by Thursday into Friday.
&&
.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Sunday/...
As of 1230 PM Sat...High confidence in VFR conditions through
the period as high pressure crests over the terminals this
afternoon and slides offshore overnight. Consequently, northerly
winds this afternoon gradually back to southwesterly and
increase to 5-10 kt Sunday ahead of a weak cold front.
Clear skies should prevail through most of the period with a mix
of mid and high level clouds possible closer to the VA border
where weak shortwave energy and associated surface low quickly
race across the Great Lakes. Greater increase of clouds likely
from south to north as next shortwave approaches the southeast
CONUS late Sunday, although arid low-level will keep any cigs at
over 10kft.
LONG TERM /Sunday night through Wednesday/...
As of 330 AM Saturday...Predominant VFR conditions will prevail
through the long term period with high confidence. In general,
the lack of appreciable moisture or any significant weather-
makers will ensure that VFR conditions persists through
Wednesday.
&&
.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /through Sunday/...
As of 325 PM Sat...SCA conditions have ended across all waters
this afternoon as high pressure builds over the waters, but are
expected to return late Sunday as winds back southwesterly
behind the high and increasing to 15-20 kt with locally higher
gusts as a cold front approaches the region. Seas rise to 4-6
feet for outer central waters late Sunday, then build further to
5-7 feet as the front sweeps across the waters and winds veer
NW surging to 20-25 kt. Given relatively high confidence in
stronger winds late Sunday night, raised SCA for all waters
except for inland waters.
LONG TERM /Sunday night through Wednesday/...
As of 330 AM Saturday...Winds diminish and seas subside to 3-5
ft early Sunday. Another cold front will aprroach the area, with
breezy SW flow returning later Sunday, becoming NW as the front
crosses the waters early Monday. SCAs will likely be needed for
the coastal waters with seas increasing to 4-6 ft as well. High
pressure well south of the area will then build in through the
middle of next week, with winds trending toward moderate W to NW
and and seas 3-5 ft.
