What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Newport/Morehead City, NC wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Nov 17, 10:40 AM EST, 4 hours 20 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Nov 17, 10:40 AM EST, 4 hours 20 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
1040 AM EST Wed Nov 17 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure dominates through Thursday before the next cold
front approaches and moves through the area early Friday morning.
Cold high pressure then rebuilds Friday through the weekend.
Another strong cold front will cross early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /Through Today/...
As of 1040 AM Wed...Fcst on track with no changes needed. Temps
warming quickly on their way to highs well into the 70s, which
will be some 10 degrees above climo.

Prev disco... As of 535 AM Wed...Surface high pressure has now
moved offshore but it will continue to influence the weather as
the upper ridge remains over the southeast today. Mostly clear
skies will prevail while southerly return flow develops on the
backside of the surface high resulting in warm temperatures and
highs above normal in the low to mid 70s today.

&&

.SHORT TERM /Tonight/...
As of 535 AM Wed...The surface high will continue to extend
into eastern NC tonight but as the upper ridge axis moves east
of the area overnight, moisture will begin to advect into the
area ahead of an approaching cold front after midnight. This
will result in increased high cloud cover late and the
development of isolated to widely scattered showers just off of
the coast. These showers are expected to remain just offshore
overnight but a slight westward shift in the moisture axis could
bring this activity onshore. Low level mixing is forecast to
occur overnight and along with the increased cloud cover late,
should preclude fog development except for sheltered locations
where winds could decouple. Lows will be mild for this time of
year in the low to mid 50s inland and upper 50s coast.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 220 AM Wed...A cold front will bring chances for light
rain Thursday into Friday morning. Cold high pressure then
builds in through the weekend with below average temps expected.
Another strong cold front will move through the area on Monday,
with cold air returning mid week.

Thursday through Friday Morning...High pressure will slowly
retreat from the area on Thursday as a potent shortwave trough
approaches from the Midwest. A strong cold front will push
across the Southeast US through the day reaching Eastern NC by
early Friday morning.

Low level thicknesses will continue to increase on Thursday,
and will support highs in the mid to upper 70s. Increasing
moist southerly flow through the day will likely produce some
widely scattered showers along the coast and offshore. Then
overnight as the front crosses the region better chances for
rain are expected, however limited moisture and lack of forcing
this far south will limit the coverage of rain showers, with the
best chances for rain remaining north of US 64 and across the
Outer Banks.

Temps will remain mild ahead of the front Thursday night but
will sharply drop behind it as strong CAA moves in, and temps by
daybreak Friday will be down in the 40s and low 50s.

Friday through Sunday...Cold high pressure will move in from
the northwest behind the cold front, with strong CAA continuing
into Saturday. Temps will struggle to increase more than 5-10
degrees Friday, with highs only expected in the mid to upper 50s.
High pressure will shift over southern VA Friday night, which
should lead to good radiational cooling conditions, allowing
temps to drop below freezing inland, an into the low 40s right
along the coast.

High pressure will move over Southern New England Saturday,
however NE/ENE winds will continue to bring cooler air into the
area. High temps Saturday will rebound only slightly with upper
50s to around 60 expected. By Sunday high pressure will have
moved offshore and easterly to southeasterly flow will develop.
Low level heights will also increase, allowing for highs to
reach the mid to possibly upper 60s.

Monday and Tuesday...A powerful upper level trough will dive
south from the upper Midwest on Monday, with rapid cyclogenesis
expected over the Great Lakes. As the trough pushes east,
another strong baroclinic cold front is expected to move across
the SE US, reaching Eastern NC at some point Monday. There is
also some indication that another surface low may develop just
off the NC coast and move up the Eastern Seaboard. At any rate
a period of unsettled weather appears likely Monday, with heavy
rain and gusty winds possible. Behind this system Tuesday
conditions should dry out, however potentially the coldest air
mass so far this fall will move in, with highs only in the 40s
to low 50s, and lows down below freezing Monday and Tuesday
night.

&&

.AVIATION /16Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Tonight/...
As of 535 AM Wed...Mainly VFR conditions will continue with
mostly clear skies and light southerly winds as high pressure
remains over the area. Only exceptions will be early this
morning and again late tonight where isolated patches of shallow
fog could develop in sheltered locations and produce brief sub
VFR conditions.

LONG TERM /Thursday through Sunday/...
As of 235 AM Wed...VFR conditions are expected through most of
the period with high pressure in control. A cold front will
cross the region on Thursday night and could lead to a period of
sub-VFR conditions through early Friday morning.

&&

.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /Through Tonight/...
As of 535 AM Wed...No changes to previous thinking. Excellent
boating conditions continue through tonight as offshore high
pres slowly slides east. Variable winds 10 kt or less this
morning will become S around 10 kt this afternoon. The S winds
will increase to 10-15 kt tonight then become SW late. Seas will
be around 2 ft today then build slightly to 2-3 ft tonight.

LONG TERM /Thursday through Sunday/...
As of 245 AM Wed...Small craft conditions for most inland and
coastal waters likely behind a cold front early Friday morning,
and will linger into Saturday morning across the coastal waters
thanks to hazardous seas.

Winds will be SW 10-20 kts on Thursday morning, and then
strengthen to 20-25 kts overnight into Friday morning ahead of
a cold front. Behind the front winds turn sharply to the NW
at 20-30 kts, and continue through the day Friday out of the
north. Winds will subside and turn to the NE Saturday at 10-15
kts, and then become very light on Sunday while shifting to the
E/SE.

Seas are expected to be mostly 2-3 ft Thursday, and then
increase to 4-5 ft Thursday night. Seas then build further
Friday morning behind the front to 5-7 ft, subsiding to 3-5 ft
by Saturday morning, and then to 2-4 ft Sunday.
