AM EST Tuesday. For the Coastal Flood Watch, from Saturday
afternoon through late Monday night.
* IMPACTS...2 to 4 feet of inundation above ground level is
possible in some areas near shorelines and tidal waterways
resulting in a significant threat to life and property. In some
areas, battering waves could cause additional damage to
property. Numerous roads may be impassable under several feet of
water. Significant ocean overwash is expected north of Cape
Hatteras, especially in vulnerable sections between Oregon Inlet
and Buxton. Highway 12 may be impassable at times, especially
near high tide. Water levels will likely peak Sunday into Monday
morning.

10 feet in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, ocean
overwash around the time of high tide and one to two feet of
soundside inundation above ground level near inlets.
* WHERE...Northern Outer Banks and Hatteras Island.
* WHEN...For the High Surf Advisory, until 4 PM EST this
afternoon. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, until 1 PM EST this
afternoon.
* IMPACTS...Ocean overwash will be less than the past two
mornings, but could once again flood sections of Hwy 12 and
oceanfront properties at vulnerable areas from Buxton to Pea
Island around the time of the 11 AM high tide. In some areas,
battering waves will cause additional damage to property. Up to
2 feet of inundation above ground level is possible soundside
near inlets and south of Cape Hatteras, resulting in minor
inundation of very low lying roads and properties. Dangerous
swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.

* IMPACTS...Up to 2 feet of inundation is possible in the village
of Ocracoke resulting in minor inundation of low lying roads and
properties. Flooding will extend inland from the waterfront
impacting some residences and businesses. Ocean overwash
possible along Ocracoke Island around the time of the 11 AM high
tide, which could impact portions of Highway 12.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build in from the north through tonight. A
strong coastal storm will impact the area Saturday into Monday.
The low will gradually shift eastward toward Bermuda beginning
early next week as high pressure builds in from the west. The
next cold front will arrive at the end of next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1005 AM Fri...Main changes to the forecast today were to
increase cloud cover with thick shield of cirrus continuing to
rapidly build northward, as well as adjust winds closer to obs
particularly over the Outer Banks. Otherwise forecast is on
track with a dry but dreary close to the week.
Prev disc...High pressure continues to build in from the north,
as upper trough approaches the Appalachians with midlevel
shortwave digging across the Gulf. Deeper moisture will remain
well south of the area as cyclogenesis develops over the GOM.
Still looks dry with sct-bkn high clouds. Low level thickness
values and cont NNE flow support highs 55-60 deg.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/...
As of 245 AM Fri...Only some high clouds expected thru the
evening then as developing low pressure begins to approach late
from the S will see clouds increase. Kept small pop late SE tier
as deeper moisture begins to reach the region. Some radiational
cooling thru evening will allow inland areas to reach upr
30s/low 40s. Gusty winds will keep beaches in 40s to around 50.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 330 AM Fri...Highlight of the period remains a strong
coastal low impacting the area this weekend. Below normal temps
expected through the weekend before warming trend next week as
high pressure builds in from the west.
Saturday through Monday...Area of low pressure moves north
through the Gulf of Mexico late Friday night and crosses Florida
to reach the Gulfstream Saturday morning. The low, supported by
troughing aloft, deepens as it crosses Florida and continues to
evolve as it moves NEward. Most reliable guidance in better
agreement that the low will track within a couple hundred miles
of the coast, with a strong gradient on the north and west side
of the low. As the low reaches the latitude of Cape Hatteras
late Sunday into Monday, it will begin to slowly track eastward
toward Bermuda.
Strong deep moisture advection on the north side of the low
will bring increasing rainfall coverage through the day
Saturday, with widespread rainfall, especially along the coast,
Saturday night into Sunday. There remains some uncertainty
based on the track of the low, but generally 3-5 inches of
rainfall are expected along the coast, with 1-3 inches further
inland. This rainfall could be heavy at times, bringing the
threat for localized flash flooding mainly east of US Hwy 17.
Additionally, strong winds will develop early Sunday as the low
makes its closest approach, continuing into Sunday night. 30 to
40 mph winds possible mainly along the coast, with gusts to
around 50 mph, which will likely necessitate a Wind Advisory,
with the potential for any increase in the forecast to justify a
High Wind Watch/Warning for portions of the OBX. This amount of
wind will move a lot of water in the rivers/sounds and coastal
waters, and moderate to major coastal flooding is likely. See
COASTAL FLOODING... section for more info on this threat as well
as the other beach/coastal water issues. One of the major
concerns of this system is the duration of the strong winds and
coastal issues, with winds peaking later Sunday, but not
substantially diminishing until Monday morning.
Conditions improve Monday as subsidence aloft develops in the
wake of the departing low, with generally rain-free conditions
and quickly diminishing winds.
Tuesday through Friday...Drying and warming trend as the trough
aloft pushes the low further out to sea Eward and deep ridging
builds over the area from the SW. Skies gradually clear with
highs a few degrees above normal but efficient radiational
cooling nights.
The high weakens late in the week with an approaching cold front
bringing increasingly warm and humid conditions, with rain
chances returning to the forecast Friday.

with the area impacted by an upper level trough and coastal low
bringing increased cloud coverage, rain, and gusty winds. VFR
returns Sunday night into Monday with gusty winds diminishing
through the day, with VFR prevailing through midweek.

LONG TERM /Saturday through Wednesday/...
As of 345 AM Fri...A strong coastal low will pass offshore or
over the waters Sunday, bringing Gales overspreading the waters
from south to north through the day Saturday, with very strong,
potentially storm force winds developing Sunday into Sunday
night. These will be extremely dangerous marine conditions for
all mariners as seas increase from 7-9 ft Sat morning, reaching
to around 14-18 ft early Sun morning and remaining there into
Monday. Winds diminish through the day Monday, with only light
to moderate winds Monday night through Midweek as high pressure
builds overhead. Still, mariners are advised to remain inshore

slowly tracks eastward toward Bermuda.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 4 AM Fri...Perigean spring tides will bring some of the
highest astronomical tide levels of the year this weekend into
early next week. Coincidentally, a strong low pressure system
off the coast late Sat into Sun will bring the potential for a
prolonged period of strong NE/N winds and large swells. Coastal
flooding, beach erosion, ocean overwash, and powerful surf are
expected primarily late Saturday through Monday morning, peaking
Sunday and Sun night. Ocean overwash issues along the OBX could
linger thorough early next week as NE swell remains elevated
despite diminishing winds.
Moderate to Major flooding is possible along the oceanside
Outer Banks, with significant overwash likely for many of the
most vulnerable locations on Hatteras Island and possibly
Ocracoke Island and Core Banks as well. Though the northerly
Outer Banks is typically less vulnerable to overwash, at least
minor overwash and beach erosion is possible there as well. The
high tide cycles of greatest concern are the morning high tides,
with the highest expected water levels currently coinciding
with the strongest winds and largest swells Sunday and Monday
morning, though issues Saturday morning are possible as well,
with overwash issues possibly lingering through early next week
as the low only slowly moves off toward Bermuda.
On the soundside...Minor to locally moderate coastal flooding is
likely, with water levels up to 2 ft agl expected, and locally
higher 2-4 ft agl possible around the southern Pamlico Sound.
The primary areas of concern are Downeast Carteret County and
the lower Neuse River beginning late Saturday, then expanding
toward the soundside OBX south of Cape Hatteras Sunday and
Sunday night as winds shift N then NNW. Water levels for these
areas peak Sunday, but could remain elevate through the early
part of next week.
Additionally, low water conditions are possible for areas
adjacent to the northern Pamlico Sound, mainly from Roanoke
Island to the Tri-Villages, Sunday.
Residents and visitors in low lying areas, esp those vulnerable
to strong NE/N winds, should monitor subsequent forecasts
closely.
