.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure ridging south of the area remains in control
today into the weekend. A cold front will cross through Eastern NC
Sunday morning, with colder high pressure building in behind it.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 10 PM Fri...Patches of fog already developing for some wrn
zones DPL/OAJ. This will be the theme tonight, and have
mentioned areas of fog with vsbys down to around 1/2 mile. Would
not be surprised to see lower vsbys towards daybreak, esp w of
hwy 17 where most widespread fog is expected.

Prev disc...As of 7 PM Fri...Only minor tweak was to expand
area of iso showers to encompass much of the ern and sern parts
of the FA, as weak upr disturbance slides through the region
late tonight. Just enough moisture present to spark a few
showers, but should be moving offshore by morning.

Prev disc...As of 315 PM Fri...High pressure, surface and
aloft, will remain centered off the Southeast coast with a
quasi- stationary front north of the area, which extends
westward developing low pressure over the southern Missouri
Valley. Southwest low level flow will bring increasing moisture
across the area ahead of the developing systems setting the
stage for fog and stratus development tonight. A weak mid-level
disturbance, evident most in the 850-700mb layer, will move
across the area late tonight into early Saturday which may bring
light precip but guidance is currently overdone with this
feature across coastal SC so confidence is low whether this will
occur. I do bring in slight chance PoPs across the coastal
waters and the vicinity of the northern OBX toward daybreak.
Very mild temps for mid December continue with lows in the upper
50s to lower 60s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
As of 330 PM Fri...An upper trough digs across the Midwest with
sfc low pressure deepening across the Ohio River Valley and the
trailing cold front moving into the Tennessee and lower
Mississippi River Valleys. Moist SW flow continues across the
area with low clouds and fog persisting through most of the
morning and possibly into the afternoon. Little forcing will be
present through the day and not expecting much precip but could
see isolated showers move into western sections during the
afternoon. Temps will continue to be very warm with highs
expected in the mid 70s inland and mid to upper 60s along the
immediate coast. A few records highs may be challenged,
especially along the coast, but cloudy to mostly cloudy skies
will likely prevent temps from reaching records inland. See
Climate section below for current record temps at select climate
sites.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 310 AM Fri...Very warm and quiet conditions will continue
through tomorrow with near record warmth again possible on Saturday.
A strong cold front will cross the area Sunday with rain likely,
followed by colder high pressure building in behind it. A coastal
storm may impact the area by early to mid next week but uncertainty
remains.

Saturday night and Sunday...The long term period opens with a
shortwave trough lifting across the Midwest into New England on
Saturday, with an associated surface low quickly traversing
across the OH River Valley and mid-Atlantic through the day. An
attendant cold front will sweep towards eastern NC late Sat
while high pressure lingers well offshore.

The best forcing with this feature will remain displaced to our
north and initially the frontal passage will likely only promote a
few scattered showers. The more (relatively) pronounced
precipitation will be behind the front on Sunday with increasing mid-
level Fgen and DPVA maximizing late in the day. Total QPF could
total half to three quarters of an inch (a few isolated higher
amounts along OBX where some convection could come into play
courtesy of the Gulf Stream).

Temperature curve will be non-diurnal over the weekend. Record highs
will again be tested on Saturday, but temperatures will fall little
overnight with persistent SW flow and WAA aloft. Sunday's highs will
likely be realized at or shortly after midnight as temperatures will
crater behind the front and CAA commences. By Monday morning lows
will have returned to more seasonal norms in the 30s.

Monday through Thursday...High pressure builds in behind the front
on Monday reinforcing cooler but clear conditions. Uncertainty
remains from Tues beyond, with the feature in question being a well-
pronounced shortwave/closed low expected to traverse the
southern CONUS late Monday into Tuesday. Surface cyclogenesis is
forecast over the Gulf of Mexico late Mon night into Tuesday,
with the low lifting off the SE coast and off the coast of NC.

Questions remain with both the intensity of the low and how close to
tracks to the coast. The Euro, which for the past few forecasts had
favored a more offshore solution, has now shifted much closer to the
coast more in line with the GFS, although it is faster by about 12
hours. Raised PoPs slightly given this recent trend, but a close
watch will need to be kept on this system given the potential for
coastal hazards.

.AVIATION /07Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
SHORT TERM /through Tonight/...
As of 1 AM Sat...High confidence IFR to LIFR (vis and cig)
developing at the terminals early this morning and continuing
through sunrise. After sunrise, status will begin to gradually
lift by mid morning, bringing an end to the fog threat, but IFR
ceilings could linger into midday or the afternoon before likely
becoming MVFR, and possibly scattering out at times later in
the afternoon. IFR ceilings could return again this evening and
continue overnight tonight.

LONG TERM /Sunday through Wednesday...
As of 310 AM Fri...Flight restrictions continue into Sunday as
a strong cold front crosses the terminals from west to east. Of
particular concern will be low cigs, particularly Sunday behind
the front, and a rapid wind shift early Sunday from
southwesterly to northerly with gusts up to 20-25 kt during the
day Sunday.

High pressure builds back in Monday with VFR conditions likely
before attention turns to a potential coastal storm late Tuesday.
Extent of aviation impacts remain unclear given uncertainties over
storm's track and timing.

.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /through Saturday/...
As of 1045 AM Fri...SW winds around 15 kt or less will continue
through Saturday morning with seas around 3-4 ft. Gradients
begin to tighten Saturday afternoon as a cold front approaches
from the west with 15-20 kt winds across the coastal waters
south of Oregon Inlet and 10-15 kt elsewhere with cooler waters
limited mixing. Seas begin to build late but still in the 3-5 ft
range.

Introduced third period SCA for the coastal waters south of
Oregon Inlet with winds and seas increasing further ahead of the
cold front. Will hold off on issuing for the remaining waters as
they will see SCA with post-frontal winds during the 4th period.

LONG TERM /Saturday night through Tuesday/...
As of 320 AM Fri...Marine conditions deteriorate late Sat night
as cold front approaches the waters. SW winds, primarily
offshore, increase to 15-20 kt with gusts to 25 kt nudging seas
to 5-6 feet. Winds quickly shift to northerly as front races
across the waters Sun morning, increasing to 25-30 kt both
offshore and over the sounds. Gale conditions are possible for
offshore zones. Seas, particularly for northern and central
waters, build to 6-8 feet late Sun into Monday.

High pressure builds into the area from the north Monday allowing
northeasterly winds to ease somewhat Monday into Tuesday, eventually
veering easterly and becoming light. A coastal low could impact the
waters starting late Tuesday but uncertainty over its track and
timing remain. However, at least SCA conditions are probable
starting late Tues.

...DENSE FOG DEVELOPING THIS MORNING...

Patchy dense fog, with visibility 1/4 mile or less, is developing
across eastern North Carolina early this morning, creating
hazardous travel conditions. Coverage of dense fog is expected to
continue to increase through sunrise.

When encountering any fog, drivers should slow down and use their
low beam headlights. In addition, allow extra braking distance
between you and the vehicle ahead.
