Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Medford OR 1040 PM PDT Mon May 17 2021 .Updated Aviation Discussion. .AVIATION...For the 18/06Z TAF Cycle...Near the coast and just offshore...Onshore flow behind the front is expected to result in marine stratus reforming later this evening and tonight. Confidence is not high ceilings will lower much beyond MVFR, but it will be close. VFR ceilings are expected to return tomorrow morning until the end of the TAF period at the coast, but could remain MVFR offshore. Inland west of the Cascades, VFR ceilings are expected to start. Between 10 and 12z, a mix of MVFR and VFR ceilings is expected in the Umpqua Valley, including Roseburg with partial mountain obscurations. Clouds will spill over the Umpqua Divide into the Rogue Valley between 09-11z with a chance for the higher terrain to become partly obscured, but VFR ceilings will continue at Medford. MVFR ceilings in the Umpqua Basin should improve to VFR late tomorrow morning (between 17-19z). VFR conditions will continue through the TAF period east of the Cascades. Gusty winds are likely again tomorrow afternoon, but they are not expected to be as strong as they were MOnday afternoon and evening. -Petrucelli && .DISCUSSION...Satellite imagery shows a band of high clouds moving across southern Oregon and portions of northern California ahead of the weak front moving through the area. Below the high clouds, a marine stratus layer exists offshore and along the coast and even into the Coquille valley. Overall, not expecting any impacts with this system, but winds will remain breezy during the day tomorrow ahead of the next front arriving on Wednesday bringing a larger cooling trend. Overall, this seems well- forecast, and no changes are need in this update. For more information about the forecast, please read the previous discussion below. -Schaaf && .MARINE...Updated 840 PM PDT Monday, 17 May 2021...A cold front has moved onshore with light to moderate west to southwest winds. Offshore high pressure sets up tonight into Tuesday. An upper trough will drop south over the waters bringing moderate north winds that should remain below small craft Wednesday. Northwest swell will increase tonight into Tuesday, but they are only expected to be between 5 and 6 feet and should remain in that range through the end of the week. The combination of moderate north winds behind a cold front and west to northwest swell could result in smaller craft conditions Wednesday night into Thursday. _Petrucelli && .PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 501 PM PDT Mon May 17 2021/ DISCUSSION...17/12Z NAM/GFS/EC in. Lots of low clouds and fog over the coastal waters, along the coast, and in the coastal valleys this afternoon. There are some stratocumulus clouds in the lee of Mount Shasta, and some are popping over ridges as well. Clear skies prevail over the remainder of the Medford forecast area. The upper level ridge over the area has broken down in advance of an incoming long wave trough. Short waves ejecting from the trough will support two landfalling fronts, one tonight, and the other Wednesday. Both of these fronts will only have light precipitation associated with them, most of which will fall over the coastal waters, along the coast, and in the Umpqua Basin. The bigger impacts will be temperatures and winds. Today will be the first day of a strong cooling trend that will continue through Wednesday. By that time, highs over the inland areas will be 20-30 degrees cooler than the highs yesterday, and will be around 5-10 degrees below normal. As for winds, it now looks like southwest to northwest winds will be gusty in the afternoons and evenings through Wednesday both west and east of the Cascades. The upper trough will dig into the Pacific Northwest Wednesday night, and once it gets here it will set up shop for a while, moving very slowly east. Looking at the large scale pattern, it looks like a weak double omega block across the western hemisphere with anchor lows over the Aleutians, Pacific Northwest, and off the US east coast, with highs in between. It doesn't quite get to the classic blocking configuration though. This will bring a mix of light rain and snow showers east of the Cascades and the ridges west of the Cascades with snow levels around 3500 feet Wednesday morning. However, the recent warm temperatures have left a lot of residual heat in the ground, and any snow that falls will melt very quickly and no impacts on travel are expected. The trough will remain in the area Thursday through Saturday, making for a showery regime over the area. It will also be windy east of the Cascades, with northerly prevailing winds. A slow warming trend will occur as the trough drifts east. At this time, it looks like the trough will move out Sunday, and the area will dry out and continue to warm Sunday into Monday. MARINE...Updated 200 PM PDT Monday, 17 May 2021...Seas will remain low tonight under a broad area of high pressure. Eventually, seas will begin to increase Tuesday as a higher swell moves in. These elevated seas will persist through Wednesday until the northerly winds begin to increase Wednesday evening along a cold front. Conditions may be hazardous to smaller crafts Wednesday night into Thursday as this front moves through the waters.
