Periods of snow flurries/light snow in the Mount Shasta area
continue this morning with an inch of new snow reported overnight
on the Mount Shasta Ski Park's morning Trail Report. With the
current temperature at 34 degrees in Mount Shasta City, 33
degrees at Black Butte, and temperatures expected to rise a few
degrees through the day, expect that any road impacts from
continuing snow showers there today will be very minimal and
mainly on mountain roads. Altogether, additional accumulations in
the Mount Shasta area today through mid-evening should be mostly
2 inches or less.
Elsewhere, southerly winds have gotten an early start in the
Shasta Valley with gusts mostly in the 30-40 mph range. Currently,
advisory level winds look on track to kick in this afternoon, as
is indicated in our Wind Advisory product for there. We'll be
making decisions on the high wind watches we have out during the
course of this morning. An upgrade is likely in the Shasta Valley,
but please note we're expecting just rain in that area with this
series of fronts rather than snow.
Overall, numerical model trends this morning compared to yesterday
suggest the frontal system getting hung up more along the coast
Sunday night into Monday before it heads further inland Monday
afternoon through Tuesday. If this trend continues, this will mean
lesser precipitation amounts for inland areas and in the Mount
Shasta area, at least until the front moves inland. Thus, this
will affect what we end up doing with the Winter Storm Watch for
Sunday night into Monday evening. We'll take another close look at
that today and update the forecast accordingly. ~BTL

.AVIATION...For the 30/12Z TAFs...Largely VFR conditions will
continue this morning with spots of MVFR ceilings under the heavier
showers near the coast. Look for more of the same through most of
the day with light rain persisting west of the Cascades. Eventually,
stronger south winds could create some wind shear over North Bend
and other locations along the coast late Saturday night. -Smith

.MARINE...Updated 300 AM PST Saturday 30 Jan 2021...Gale force winds
continue in the waters this morning as a front moves through. Look
for high and very steep seas through later today into tonight. The
fresh swell from the recent wind waves will push seas up to 14 feet
around 11 seconds across many locations through tonight. Another
round of gale force winds are possible Sunday afternoon and evening
as yet another front moves through the waters. If the front is
strong as currently forecast, look for wind gusts around 35 to 40
knots over most of the waters Saturday night into Sunday. -Smith

DISCUSSION...A broad NE Pacific trough is approaching to give the
region another round of significant weather late Saturday night
through Tuesday. Thereafter, the weather looks fairly uneventful
through the week.
The forecast inherited by the evening shift last night was well
done so there haven't been many changes. Looking at the latest
model data however, have decided to issue a high wind watch for
the Curry County Coast Sunday morning. A short wave is expected
to move along the front progged to reach the coast between 4am and
10am. Some gustiness looks possible in the 45-55 kt range across
the headlands and exposed areas of the higher terrain. Though the
winds seem aligned mainly southerly, there should be a brief
onshore push as a somewhat poorly formed surface low moves through
the nearshore waters.
Otherwise, the main highlights are heavy rain for the south coast
through western Siskiyou county, inland snowfall expected across
the Cascades, Siskiyous, and Siskiyou county tonight Tuesday
through Monday night, and southerly winds inland.
An areal flood watch was issued last evening and it looks good.
Posting comments on that here by previous forecaster: "We are not
expecting snow impacts to lower passes on Southwestern Oregon for
most of the storm. On the contrary and much different from the
previous storm, we're concerned about heavy rain and melting
snowpack in the Kalmiopsis/Coast Range, resulting in the potential
for flooding of small streams/creeks and potentially mainstem
rivers in the coastal basins and potentially Western Siskiyou
County (though no mainstem rivers are forecast to reach flood
stage as of this writing). Though less likely, we'll also be
keeping an eye on further inland areas west of the Cascades for
significant river and stream rises, pending the trajectory of the
heaviest precipitation."
As stated, the snow levels will be higher with this storm, but
we're still expecting around a foot in the Cascades, higher
amounts in the Siskiyous that could push 2 feet above 5000 feet.
Mount Shasta, which reported about 20 inches of wet heavy snow on
the ground last evening, is going to experience a sustained
upslope event with sustained winds of 30-50 kts between
5000-10,000 feet lasting from this morning through Monday night.
Current forecast calls for around a foot to eventually impact the
city including Black Butte Summit with 1-2 inches today, then a
potential slight bump up in snow level tonight with up to several
inches later in the night, then several more inches early Sunday
with snow levels potentially rising a bit above the city through
the afternoon. The hovering of the snow level between the city
elevation and just above the highway summit makes it difficult to
hold a great degree of confidence in if and when the snow will
change to rain. For now we're leaning on lower snow levels than
the NBM suggest and given this pattern I don't disagree with that.
We're also fairly close to NBM QPF. Another 6 inches of snow in
the city looks likely Monday, but the snow levels could be
adjusted upward above the highway after we learn more about how
Sunday shapes ups. The higher mountains there should easily get
2-3 feet and locally higher in some areas.
Gusty south winds are going to impact the Shasta Valley, Bear
Creek Valley, and higher elevations east this afternoon through
evening with an increase expected later tonight lasting through
Sunday. Not a major wind event, but enough to be a pain in the
butt here and there. Weed and Summer Lake are most threatened for
higher gusts. Day shift will need to make the decision to upgrade
the watches to warnings.
Once this trough moves in and the southerly flow abates, cooler
air will move in to freeze over the snow covered areas pretty
good. High pressure moves in and transitions to a northerly flow
aloft from mid to late week. Mainly dry most areas until Thursday
night/Friday when some light qpf with an inside slider is
forecast to come through. Stavish
