The coming week will be quite an interesting one over the Medford
forecast area. High impact snow events look likely at this time,
with snow levels dropping to the west side valley floors by the
end of this weekend and staying cold through at least the middle
of next week.
A long wave trough off the coast is pushing a front onshore at
this time. The bulk of the associated precipitation is falling
along the coast and Coast Range, and the wettest spots have seen
around 0.75 inches over the past 12 hours.
The 23/00Z KMFR sounding showed a freezing level of 6700 feet, but
that will plunge tonight, bringing snow levels down to around 4000
feet by Thursday morning.
The trough will move onshore Thursday into Thursday night along
with another front. This will bring colder air into the area and
snow levels will drop to around 2000 feet Thursday night into
Friday.
The lowering snow levels combined with ongoing precipitation will
make for snow impacts across the area. Winter Storm Warnings and
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for this time frame. See

A strong short wave diving down the backside of the trough
will move onshore Friday, pushing yet another front onshore ahead
of it Friday morning. This will bring another shot of cold air to
the area. Snow levels will drop to the 1500 to 2000 foot range,
which means some of the higher west side valleys will see snow.
Christmas Eve Day/Friday begins the time period of most concern
for travel impacts for areas west of the Cascades. A Winter Storm
Watch is in effect for much of the area west of the Cascades for
elevations above 1500 feet from midday Friday through Monday
morning. A cold upper level trough will remain overhead with short
waves moving through. This will support rounds of convection with
cold air in place. Convection will likely be strong enough to
locally lower snow levels even to the lowest west side valley
floors. Some of the showers may develop into thunderstorms.
If you will be traveling during this time period, be sure to
check the latest road conditions and forecasts before you decide
to hit the road. For everyone, including those who live locally,
now is a great time to prepare for the upcoming wintry weather by
packing a winter travel/survival kit and preparing for colder,
potentially snowy weather. It is likely that elevations down to
between 500 and 1500 feet will be impacted by snow at some point
during the next 10 days.
Long term discussion from the Wednesday afternoon AFD...Sun 26 Dec
through Wed 29 Dec 2021. Cold and occasionally snowy weather will
be the overarching theme through the extended period. A strong,
cold, long wave upper trough will remain over the PacNW throughout
the extended period. This will drive cold, modified Arctic air
into our region, and as waves rotate through the trough, this sets
the stage for considerable impacts from snow even in the low
levels.
The main modified arctic front will move through Sunday into Monday.
Snow levels will rise briefly to 1500 to 2000 feet Sunday afternoon
ahead of the front with snow changing to rain over the lower
elevations. The caveat here is that a good over-water trajectory
will bring plenty of moisture, and strong dynamics will lead to high
precipitation rates which may drive snow levels lower than currently
advertised, especially in protected valleys. Nevertheless, the
mountains are likely to get slammed by this front with snow amounts
measured in feet. In particular, west and northwest-facing ranges
like the Cascades, Siskiyous, and the Kalmiopsis are really going to
get nailed. Sunday does not look like a good time to be trying to
get over I-5 at Siskiyou Summit, and this timing is unfortunate
given that it comes at the end of a holiday weekend.
Snow levels then plummet to around 500 feet Sunday night into Monday
morning, and this is when valleys could see additional impacts from
snow. The good thing is that moisture will be decreasing by that
time. At present, we only show the potential for an inch of two in
the west side valleys, but even that amount can cause substantial
impacts to travel.
Cold air then settles in over the area from later Monday through the
extended with snow levels near the surface throughout. Temperatures
will struggle to reach freezing for highs, especially where there is
fresh snow, and lows will be well below freezing area-wide. There
will likely be additional waves which produce snow, but amounts
should be lighter in general. This pattern persists through the end
of the year, and this will have to be watched closely as you never
know when one of these systems will overachieve and drop a bunch of
snow all of a sudden. We will be able to nail those details down as
we get closer, but everyone should be prepared for an unusually
lengthy encounter with winter weather over Southwest Oregon and

westward. Some local MVFR ceilings exist where the heavier rain
showers are. MVFR ceilings and terrain obscuration will continue for

shear possible, especially east of the Cascades. Freezing levels

brief episode of very high seas Friday afternoon through early
Saturday morning. Very high and very steep seas of 17 to 20 feet are
forecast with the combination of westerly wind waves and a dominant
