over most of the valleys in southern Oregon and northern
California with some dense fog along Interstate 5 from the Weed
Airport south to Black Butte Summit. Some of the stratus has even
produced some heavy enough drizzle to measure at the Medford
airport and other locations. On top of the clouds, a frontal
boundary is moving over the Umpqua Divide. Overall, the weather

with southerly winds gradually transitioning to mostly northerly
late today into early Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday increasing
northerly winds and westerly swell are likely to cause seas to
become steep again. Seas are then likely to remain elevated Friday
into Saturday before subsiding. A seasonably strong frontal system
is likely to move through Next Sunday night into Monday. ~BTL/Keene

DISCUSSION...Dry high pressure will likely dominate the pattern
into Friday and possibly through Sunday with stagnant valley air,
seasonably cool to cold mornings, warmer to much warmer than
normal afternoons, light winds, and also areas of night and
morning valley low clouds and fog. The only two exceptions will be
a weak front today and another dissipating front late Wednesday
night into early Friday morning.
Today's front will result in a chance of light rain for western
and northern portions of Coos and Douglas counties, with areas of
morning drizzle in other west side valleys. Activity with the
second front will again be in the form of drizzle for west side
valleys, especially in southern Oregon. Where this precipitation
occurs, it may temporarily improve valley air quality. An Air
Stagnation Advisory remains in effect for the valleys of Josephine
and Jackson counties into Thursday morning, and the valleys of
Klamath County into Friday morning. Air quality may also diminish
for the Umpqua Valley during Tuesday through Wednesday.
There remains high confidence in the big picture of the forecast
into Friday, with the highest uncertainty regarding both the
daily extent of formation and dissipation of valley low clouds and
fog, and the directly related impact on temperatures. Of course,
the longer that stratus persists, the more that temperatures will
be hindered from rising.
For next weekend, there remains some uncertainty regarding the
possibility that the persistent westerly jet stream into western
Canada may veer to the northwest and allow the first in a series
of systems to ride over the top of (and weaken) the persistent
ridge over the California coast. The 00Z GEFS and ECMWF ensemble
members have trended toward maintaining the strength of the ridge,
with the all of the EC and 80% of the GEFS members maintaining a
stagnant pattern through Sunday.
The pattern may change and become more active Sunday night, with
slightly more than half of ensemble members showing a front with
at least a chance of coastal rain. While the strength and timing
of disturbances is highly uncertain, the 8 to 14 day forecast
period is likely to include a series of fronts with at least
modestly lower temperatures/snow levels. The highest probability
is that, at least initially, snow levels would only drop to
around 5500 to 7000 feet, affecting the higher peaks.
AVIATION...29/18Z TAFs...A weak front is moving through the forecast
area this morning. Behind it, there has been some clearing at the
coast around KOTH. Models suggest low clouds returning today at the
coast , but we have kept the next several hours clear based on
satellite trends, and we'll assess as the morning progresses.
Inland, IFR conditions are impacting most valley terminals. We do
expect some clearing by early afternoon to VFR based on some
satellite trends and the weak front stirring things up a bit, but
LIFR/IFR conditions will return tonight to most valley terminals.
This may develop later due to a slightly drier air mass working its
