DISCUSSION...Only minor updates made this morning, mostly to
bring cloud cover in line with current observations. Patchy fog
developed in the Coquille Basin while a layer of marine stratus
has reached into the Brookings area this morning. Also, some high
level cirrus streams across the east side this morning. Patches of
cirrus will continue to stream through the area today while the
lower clouds along the coast will dissipate over the next few
hours. Mostly sunny skies are expected this afternoon with high
temperatures about 5 degrees warmer than yesterday's readings.
This warming trend will continue through the weekend and into next
week as we expect an early season heat wave to bring the warmest
temperatures of the year so far. For more details on the heat, as
well as the anticipated cool down, see the previous discussion

AVIATION...For the 29/18Z TAF Cycle...VFR conditions will prevail
through this evening. North winds near shore will be gusty this
afternoon and evening. Gusty winds are also likely at the surface of
west side valleys.
Expecting LIFR conditions along the coast again late tonight,
including at KOTH. -Miles
MARINE...Updated 800 AM PDT Saturday 29 May 2021...The general
pattern will favor a thermal trough across northern California and
far southern Oregon. This pattern will keep gusty winds across the
waters of northern California and far southern Oregon with lighter
winds to the north into early next week.
While wind waves remain both dominant and highest over the southern
part of the waters, a northwest swell will continue to decay. This
will result in lowering seas north of Cape Arago through Sunday.
Seas will remain steep south of Cape Arago through this evening,
except very steep south of Cape Sebastian.
Later tonight through Monday evening, seas will remain steep south
of Cape Blanco, though south of Cape Sebastian there is the
potential for another brief episode of high and very steep seas with
winds approaching gale force Monday afternoon and evening.
There will be a trend of diminishing winds and seas as the thermal
trough pushes farther inland on Tuesday then low pressure disrupts
the pattern on Wednesday.

PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 354 AM PDT Sat May 29 2021/
DISCUSSION... (including Fire Weather)...The -0.2 degree tilt
shows returns over a broad area concurrent with an inversion.
Meanwhile, the 0.5 degree tilt shows no returns. The upper air
sounding this morning will be interesting to note if it will show
a similar strong subsidence inversion with very dry air above the
inversion layer like it did last night. Above the inversion layer
satellite imagery depicts some higher cirrus clouds which will
keep us from reaching the full potential of cooling overnight.
Overall, patterns like the subsidence inversion indicate that the
area is under an area of building high pressure. In addition, when
looking at contours of thickness, it is apparent that the thermal
trough is building offshore and will continue to do so over the
next several days. As a result, Southern Oregon and northern
California will see a warming and drying trend across the next 5
days.
The hottest day for the south coast will be Monday when the
thermal trough begins to move ashore. This along with the winds
from the northeast will bring temperatures into the low 80s in
Brookings. Since winds will be from the north or northeast areas
areas away from the Chetco drainage will be a bit cooler with
temperatures only the upper 60s to low 70s. Then, as the thermal
trough moves over the West Side Valleys on Tuesday, expect that to
be the hottest day so far this year with many areas south of the
Umpqua Divide reaching the upper 90s to triple digits. This will
challenge several records at our climate sites.
Then on Wednesday, expect the hottest temperatures for the east
side as the thermal trough moves eastward past the
Cascades.Temperatures will reach into the upper 80s on Tuesday and
into the 90s on Wednesday. Still, for West Side Valleys, expect
the upper 90s to low triple digits possible once again. It will
depend on how quickly the thermal trough moves through the area.
Although the forecast has trended temperatures down a degree or
two in most places, which makes sense that both the GFS and ECMWF
ensembles don't show us reaching triple digits; and traditional
methods of forecasting 850 temperatures would agree with this
assessment. It is worth noting, however, how dry the layer is
above the subsidence inversion, and that this will continue to
keep things extremely dry across our area. Thus, it appears as if
this may be a case where ensembles are underdispersive. That and
the National Blend of Models gives Medford a 68 percent chance of
reaching 100 degrees. Have gone ahead an issued an excessive heat
watch for portions of the West Side and northern California
valleys for Tuesday and Wednesday. This is significant heat we're
expecting in early June.
For those concerned about fire weather during the next several
days, expect humidities to reach into the low teens to areas of
single digits across much of the area (except for the coast).
Luckily winds are not expected to be extremely breezy. However,
have trended the humidity recoveries lower toward statistical
guidance due to the expected northeast wind helping dry things
out.
Beginning Thursday, the ridge breaks down and a weak trough moves
through the area, largely to our north. Models seem to be a little
optimistic when it comes to precipitation in our area, but the
coast and portions of the Umpqua Basin may have the best shot at
showers. Additionally, have left the thunderstorm chances from the
day shift chances decreasing somewhat. Have very little confidence
in the pattern to be making whole-scale changes as the guidance is
all over the place. Fortunately for most, the breakdown of the
ridge will mean somewhat cooler temperatures. -Schaaf

clouds and fog around Brookings, the Coquille Valley, and Reedsport,

pattern will favor a thermal trough across northern California and
far southern Oregon. This pattern will keep gusty winds across the
waters of northern California and far southern Oregon with lighter
winds to the north into early next week.
While wind waves remain both dominant and highest over the southern
part of the waters, a northwest swell will continue to decay. This
will result in lowering seas north of Cape Arago through Sunday.
Seas will remain steep south of Cape Arago through Saturday evening,
except very steep south of Brookings.
Later Saturday night through Monday evening, seas will remain steep
south of Cape Blanco, though south of Pistol River there is the
potential for another brief episode of high and very steep seas with
winds approaching gale force Monday afternoon and evening.
There will be a trend of diminishing winds and seas as the thermal
trough pushes farther inland on Tuesday then low pressure disrupts
the pattern on Wednesday.
