  breezy winds to create very low wind chills for this time of

.DISCUSSION...Quiet weather is expected tonight ahead of our next
front, due to arrive tomorrow morning. The main impact from this
front will be increasing chances for frost and freeze conditions
and the chance for some light mountain snowfall. By Sunday night,
the air mass is forecast to be in the coldest 1 percent for this
time of year, per the 1979-2009 climatology. Cloud cover Monday
morning will likely prevent temperatures from reaching their
coldest potential, but less clouds Tuesday morning means the
coldest temperatures so far this season, with teens east of the
Cascades and 20s to low 30s west of the Cascades. Sunday night
into Monday morning will feature the chance for some light
snowfall over mountain passes generally above 4000 feet and
focused over the Cascades. Early October sun angle will likely
limit impacts to roadways to a minor magnitude, but travelers
should be aware of this early season snowfall potential. No
changes were made to the forecast this evening, and things look on

.AVIATION...10/06Z TAFs...VFR will prevail through this evening. A
cold front will send light rain and MVFR to the coast north of Cape
Blanco overnight, spreading across Douglas County (including
Roseburg) on Sunday morning. Decided to keep IFR conditions for a
few hours (13-16z) Sunday morning with some guidance suggesting the
potential for lower ceilings as the front moves through. However its
possible the conditions may only be temporary during this time
period and not a prevailing condition.

A little light rain with will also move through Jackson County
(including Medford) around mid morning Sunday. Ceilings should
remain VFR, but partial terrain will be obscured.

In NorCal and east of the Cascades, VFR should continue to prevail
through the TAF period. The front could bring brief partial mountain
obscuration Sunday morning in the vicinity of Klamath Falls. Gusty
winds are also expected Sunday afternoon with gusts up to 30  knots

.MARINE...Updated 230 PM PDT Saturday 9 October 2021...High pressure
will be over the coastal waters this evening. A cold front is
expected late tonight into Sunday morning. Despite some south to
southwest wind ahead of and along the front, the strongest winds
will be from the north to northwest behind the front Sunday morning
into Monday morning. A steep combination of wind wave and northwest
swell will develop on Sunday morning, with elevated winds and seas
first developing in the outer waters early Sunday morning, then
spreading southeastward across the waters. Seas will build from
around 6 feet on Sunday morning to a peak of 10 to 13 feet on
Monday. Seas will remain high and steep at least through Monday
night.

Slight improvement in conditions is expected Tuesday as weak high
pressure briefly builds into the waters ahead of the next cold front
on Tuesday night. Seas are likely to build again Tuesday night into

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 259 PM PDT Sat Oct 9 2021/

DISCUSSION...Current satellite shows mainly clear skies across
southern Oregon and northern California. However, satellite also
shows our next system poised and ready to reach our area tomorrow.
This system is relatively dynamic with several key features. The
main feature which will drive our forecast is that the front will
arrive first and cause snow levels to crash behind the front--
starting around 8000 feet and dropping to 3500 feet. It is
possible that snow levels are a little too high due to the upper
air being so cold, but don't have the confidence to forecast lower
snow levels this early in the season without more than just a
very strong cold pool. The second factor is that the upper level
trough will move through after the front, producing additional
chances for light precipitation with those lower snow levels.

The forecast basically describes a moderate front coming through
on Sunday with most of the precipitation falling as rain. In
addition, the dynamics of this system could create the potential
for thunderstorms across the coast north of Bandon and for the
marine waters. This is a slight chance caused more by the dynamics
of the system instead of the traditional thermodynamic procedures
one might see in other areas of the country, and it would only be
a few strikes if any occurred at all. Once the upper level trough
comes through Sunday night into Monday, expect a second shot of
light precipitation at the lower snow levels. Although impacts are
not expected, some light snow--up to an inch is possible in some
of our higher passes in the Cascades like Willamette Pass and Lake
of the Woods with lesser amounts at our moderate passes like
Siskiyou Summit at I-5 (half an inch or less). This part of the
forecast has been relatively stable, and therefore confidence is
relatively high despite the complexity of the incoming system.

After the system comes through, breezy north winds are expected on
Monday afternoon and evening. The precipitation should be ending
around then, but temperatures will be very cold for this time of
year. A wide variety of Frost and Freeze products will likely be
needed for west side valleys--which if things continue down this
path could be issued as early as tonight for Monday night.

A brief break is expected Monday night into Tuesday morning, but
the next weak front appears to arrive Tuesday afternoon and
evening. This system will not be a significant precipitation
producer either, but additional snow could fall in the Cascades
with snow levels between 4000 and 5000 feet. Again, impacts are
expected to be quite minimal with this system. Ensembles begin to
dry us out for most of the rest of the week. Another weak system
could arrive in the far extended period, but confidence in the
general details is low at this time. Please stay tuned to the
forecast for more information on potential snowfall, freezing
temperatures, and other fall to winter-like weather. -Schaaf

FIRE WEATHER...A stronger and notably colder frontal system will
move through Sunday  followed by a cold upper level low pressure
system Sunday night into Monday. Light to moderate valley rain and
some light mountain snow is likely from along and near the
Siskiyous northward and from the Oregon Cascades westward Sunday,
spreading southeastward across mainly the higher terrain Sunday
night into Monday. Northerly winds behind the front are expected
to become gusty across the ridges and in north to south oriented
valleys Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Wind chill values
will also be unseasonably cold across the area during that time
period. Winds are likely to diminish across many lower elevation
areas Monday night into Tuesday morning bringing the coldest
temperatures of the Autumn across the forecast area.
