.DISCUSSION...FireWx discussion to come in a quick update...
Smoke from the River Complex is spreading to a higher altitude
than expected as fires became plume dominated and thus avoiding
the boundary layer NW flow. As a result it is spreading northward
across western Jackson county and slowing becoming more diffuse
across eastern Jackson and Western Klamath County. A fire to the
NW of this one has also had its smoke plume show up on radar. For
now these are the only fire related radar signatures.
On satellite, stratus can be seen remaining impacted along the coast
south of Cape Blanco. While a better picture of the smoke can be
garnered. The smoke is making its way over central Douglas County,
while smoke from further south in California is moving towards the
Mt. Shasta area.
There are other signatures on radar though, specifically those
associated with the convection going off east of the Cascades.
Frequent intra-cloud lightning is associated with the cells so far.
Cloud to ground strikes have been a little more scarce, but have
been frequent in the cells that are moving north near Bend. Would
expect as the afternoon progresses and lapse rates steepen over a
warmer surface that CG strikes become more common.
Like today, models are trending the area most conducive to
thunderstorms further northeast and have trimmed the slight chance
to the eastern half of Lake County. Hot temperatures in the valleys
west of the Cascades will continue through this time as well.
Tonight and tomorrow are likely to have the worst overnight
temperature recoveries.
On Wednesday a strong disturbance over the offshore waters will
approach the forecast area, and this will bring increasing marine
layer low clouds to the coast and gusty winds to most locations.
While the models could be misrepresenting drizzle as rain, there
should be enough moisture to get more than a trace out of this
front. Therefore, have increased PoPs along the coast, mainly north
of Cape Blanco, and along the coast range. Nonetheless,
precipitation with this feature is going to be limited, likely to
due to shallow moisture, but certainly not due to lack of dynamics.
A healthy jet of 100kt moves overhead late Wednesday into Thursday
morning, so this will trigger at least a chance of showers and
thunderstorms, focused east of the Cascades where at least some
moisture resides and dynamics are favorable.
Much cooler air will follow in the footsteps of this system, with
below normal temperatures expected Thursday through at least the
beginning of the weekend. Breezy and dry conditions will
characterize the weather on these days for inland areas. -Miles

.AVIATION...For the 02/18Z TAF Cycle...Over the coastal waters,
along the coast, and in the coastal valleys...Areas of IFR/LIFR
cigs/vsbys in low clouds and fog is slow to burn off. The lower
conditions should gradually improve to VFR between 20-21Z for the
coastal valleys, but it may not be until after 22z at the coast. Any
improvement will be brief with marine stratus moving back onshore
early this evening and lasting through the end of the TAF period.
Over the remainder of the area...VFR conditions will persist through
the TAF period. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop
afternoon and evening, mainly from the Cascades east, but with a
focus in northern Klamath County and northern/eastern Lake County.
Any storms could bring strong, gusty winds. Smoke and haze from area
wildfires will also continue, but most won't be enough to drop
visibilities below VFR, except possibly very near the fires.

.MARINE...Updated 200 PM PDT Monday 2 August 2021...Offshore high
pressure and a thermal trough near the coast will both persist
through Wednesday morning. This will result in a continuation of
gusty north winds with the strongest winds expected to be south of
Bandon, except near shore from Gold Beach southward where southerly
wind reversals will occur at times. Areas of marine stratus and fog
will also persist. North winds will weaken Wednesday afternoon as an
upper trough approaches from the south followed by a surface front
that will move onshore Wednesday night. The thermal trough and
stronger north winds will return this weekend. -Petrucelli
