namely in the Coquille to North Bend area, have already started to
burn off today, and should clear over the next hour or so. After
that, expect clear skies and warm temperatures for he rest of
the day.
Major forecast efforts today will focus on the heat this weekend
and thunderstorms possible next week. Fore more details, see the

.AVIATION...For the 18/12Z TAF Cycle...MVFR ceilings will persist
into Friday morning along and near the coast from about Cape Blanco
northward, including portions of the lower Umpqua/Coquille Basins
and KOTH. VFR will prevail elsewhere. Strong, gusty north to
northwest winds will peak at 30-35 kt Friday afternoon/evening along
the coast with some breezes peaking around 20kt over the interior.

.MARINE...Updated 905 AM PDT Friday, 18 June 2021...
The thermal trough along the coast will strengthen through Saturday.
This will continue to bring moderate to strong north winds and steep
to very steep seas that are likely to last through Sunday evening
before subsiding. The strongest winds and heaviest seas will occur
Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings and will be most
hazardous south of Cape Blanco. Models suggest winds will be quite
similar into Saturday, but that the pressure gradient will peak
Saturday, so winds may be a little stronger that day. Due to the
longer cumulative duration of the north winds Saturday versus on
Friday, seas are likely to peak Saturday evening. Winds and seas
will then gradually weaken Sunday and then more rapidly into Monday.
Fog and low clouds are reasonably likely Monday as low pressure
develops over the coastal waters area. These could persist beyond
Monday, but also may lift into showers and higher clouds as low
pressure becomes more established in the area.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 546 AM PDT Fri Jun 18 2021/
DISCUSSION...The two main updates to the forecast are related to
a higher confidence in the medium-term portion. The first is
better model agreement that northeast low level winds will
continue into Sunday morning with a Chetco Effect bringing hot and
dry conditions to Brookings. The high in Brookings on Thursday
reached 80, and it should reach or slightly exceed that value
again today and Saturday, then the daily maximum is likely to
occur Sunday morning before a shift to onshore flow. The second
update is to add a slight chance of Thunderstorms on Monday
afternoon and evening for the southern Oregon Cascades
northeastward across northern Klamath and far northern Lake
counties. This change is due to a majority of 00Z GEFS and ECMWF
ensemble members showing a faster north-northeastward movement
(at least early in the week) of a trough that will be located
offshore of northern California.
Otherwise, the forecast story for the next week remains
consistent with what has been previously advertised. Items of
particular note include:
Stratus at the coast from Cape Blanco northward and into the
Coquille Valley this morning that will gradually erode by
afternoon, then thicken and return this evening. It will likely
erode a little faster on Saturday morning, but then be a bit
thicker Saturday night into Sunday morning. More extensive and
persistent coastal stratus is likely Sunday evening into
Wednesday.
Warm to hot and dry conditions inland through Sunday with a stable
air mass and mostly clear skies. This includes gusty afternoon and
evening winds. These gusty winds combined with the dry
conditions will lead to some critical fire weather conditions
across portion of the East Side, and details can be found in the
fire weather discussion below. An Excessive Heat Watch remains in
effect for Sunday and Monday, including the valleys of western
and Siskiyou County as well as the eastern portion of Josephine
County and much of Jackson County.
Monday is expected to be the hottest day for most of our inland
locations, about the same to a couple of degrees hotter than
Sunday. While the mention of the slight chance of thunderstorms
is warranted, it is also worth mentioning that there are still a
substantial minority of models that are slower and maintain a
stable air mass on Monday. There is a slight chance of showers
Monday night with a possibility of shortwave induced
precipitation.
There is actually higher confidence that the upper low offshore
of northern California will be sufficiently close to our area to
generate isolated thunderstorms in some portions of our area on
Tuesday afternoon/evening. As such, compared to Monday, a slight
chance mention is included for a broader area from Siskiyou County
northeastward.
The main uncertainty in the forecast from Monday through the
remainder of the week remains the speed and track of the upper
low, which will have a major impact on the resultant coverage and
the degree of risk of generating thunderstorms. The GFS remains on
the more progressive side, and the ECMWF on the slower side of
model solutions. The GFS would support a gradually diminishing
risk of thunderstorms as the trough shifts east-northeastward,
with a slight chance of thunderstorms lingering, mainly on the
east side Wednesday then ridging arriving from the southwest with
a new episode of warming and drying Thursday through Friday.
Meantime, the ECMWF still favors a Rex Block with the lingering
trough resulting in lingering instability through the week. The
official forecast continues to reflect a blended solution with the
region of instability shifting northeast and east of our area
Thursday.
FIRE WEATHER...A high pressure ridge over the area will be
briefly weakened by a shortwave trough today, strengthen on the
weekend, and persist into Monday. This will result in warm and dry
conditions with hot temperatures across inland areas this weekend,
continuing into Monday. Meanwhile, a surface thermal trough will
bring gusty northeast winds along with moderate recoveries to the
coastal ridges into the weekend.
Winds are expected to increase over inland areas late today, as the
weak but dry upper level disturbance gradually moves into the area.
This will result in breezy to gusty winds across the area. Of
particular concern will be gusty winds and low day-time humidities
east of the Cascades. Critical fire weather conditions are
possible in Modoc County and near critical in the mountains in
eastern Klamath County and western Lake County. This disturbance
will gradually move east on Saturday. So expect additional breezy
to gusty afternoon winds, especially east of the Cascades. Winds
lower Saturday night. However, hot temperatures are expected on
Sunday and Monday for inland areas.
Monday afternoon, an upper low is forecast to approach the area
from the southwest. This may allow some instability and mid level
moisture to move into the area and bring a slight chance for
thunderstorms to inland areas. The low is likely to linger in the
area at least through Wednesday for a continued slight chance of
thunderstorms, mainly from the Cascades eastward.
