UPDATE...

Arctic air continues to plunge into the Mid-South this morning.
Current temperatures range from the mid 20s near the AR/MO and
KY/TN borders to the mid 30s across Monroe County, Mississippi.
Temperatures won't warm too much as cold air advection is
occurring across the region. A few showers continue to skirt
portions of Northeast Mississippi at this time. Will update to
add some small POPS. Otherwise, rest of the forecast looks good.

DISCUSSION... /issued 524 AM CST Fri Feb 12 2021/

Surface analysis this morning places a quasi- stationary boundary
located over Northern Georgia and South Carolina and a cold front
from Southern Alabama back into the Northern Gulf of Mexico.
Meanwhile, across the Mid-South, LAPS soundings and WSR-88D Vad
Wind Profile depicted a steep low level arctic inversion. This
steep inversion combined with NNE boundary layer winds and some
upper level forcing associated with a departing upper level jet
produced some light freezing drizzle Thursday evening into early
this morning. KNQA/KGWX WSR-88D radar trends depict light
precipitation occurring over Northwest Mississippi moving ENE. As
of 4 AM CST, temperatures across the Mid-South are predominantly
in the 20s with lower 30s occurring over NE Mississippi from
Tupelo to the southeast. Wintry precipitation concerns will remain
the primary focus in the forecast for the next 7 days in this
morning/s forecast issuance.

Radar trends over the past hour have indicated the development of
light precipitation over areas just southwest of Oxford and
possibly freezing rain as indicated by LAPS soundings. A Winter
Weather Advisory was issued early this morning through 6 AM for
the freezing drizzle and may need to be extended for a portion of
North Mississippi to account for the freezing rain.

Otherwise, mainly precipitation free weather is expected across
the Mid-South today with temperatures remaining mostly below
freezing. A subtle and weak shortwave trough will move across the
Lower Mississippi Valley tonight. There is a potential for some
light rain/freezing rain over Northeast Mississippi with
precipitation amounts remaining relatively light around a couple
of hundredths at best. This will continue to be assessed
throughout the day in the event headlines are needed for later
tonight across the aforementioned area.

Gusty NNE winds combined with lows Saturday night in the teens may
result in wind chill values dropping into the single digits below
zero across portions of the Missouri Bootheel and Northeast
Arkansas. This may necessitate a Wind Chill Advisory if trends
continue in subsequent forecasts.

Models are continuing to show an potent open wave trough dropping
out of the Rockies and into the Southern Plains on Sunday then
rotating through the Middle and Lower Mississippi Valleys Sunday
night into Monday night. It appears that a lead shortwave trough
may enter the the region Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening,
resulting the development of precipitation across the area with
the best chances of precipitation occurring on Monday as the upper
level trough rotates through the region. Mixed precipitation
types will remain a challenge with this system with freezing rain,
sleet, and snow all possible especially along and south of I-40,
and mostly sleet and/or snow to the northwest. It appears that
headlines may be warranted for this next system but exact
precipitation types along with amounts will continue to be
further assessed in upcoming forecasts.

Long term models indicate yet another upper level trough will move
through the Lower Mississippi Valley for mid to late next week
bringing another chance of wintry mixed precipitation to the Mid-
South.

Current VFR ceilings across northern sections of the Mid-South
will end by this evening as low clouds currently over the
remainder of the region move back north. Most areas will see IFR
ceilings for this afternoon through Saturday morning with some
improvement to MVFR ceilings by the end of the forecast period.
Winds will be from the north at around 10 knots for much of the
forecast period.
