.A potent upper level trough will move into the Mid-South Sunday
Afternoon into Monday. With cold temperatures already in place,
winter precipitation is expected to fall across the entire Mid-
South. Light wintry precipitation will begin to move in as early
as the morning hours on Sunday. Impacts will be minimal through
midday. During the afternoon hours, heavier precipitation will
spread into the area continuing into the evening. A brief lull

UPDATE...

It's a frigid morning across the Mid-South as strong cold air
advection is occurring across the area. Current temperatures range
from the mid teens across Northeast Arkansas and the Missouri
Bootheel to the around 30 degrees across Monroe County,
Mississippi. Gusty northerly winds are making it feel even colder
as current wind chill values are in the single digits across much
of the CWA. Made some minor tweaks to temperatures since don't
expect them to budge much today. Otherwise, updated earlier to
add flurries as that will continue into the afternoon hours.

DISCUSSION... /issued 538 AM CST Sat Feb 13 2021/

DISCUSSION...GOES-16 satellite trends depict a weak shortwave
trough departing Northeast Mississippi this morning with drier air
filtering into the Mid-South. KGWX WSR-88D radar trends and METAR
observations indicate freezing rain has ended across this
aforementioned area and the Winter Weather Advisory was cancelled.
As of 4 AM CST, temperatures across the Mid-South range from the
teens to lower 20s north of I-40 and 20s to around 30 degrees
south. Wintry precipitation potential for Sunday afternoon into
Monday night and Wednesday into Thursday remain the predominant
focus in this morning's forecast issuance.

Weak high pressure will result in mainly precipitation free
weather across the Mid-South today. Persistent N/NNE winds below
a strong subsidence inversion will keep cloud cover in place
across the area. Highs today are expected to be in the lower 30s
over Northeast Mississippi and 20s across the remainder of the
forecast area. A combination of gusty NNE winds over Northeast
Arkansas and temperatures dropping to near 10 degrees may result
in wind chill values dropping below zero late tonight into Sunday
morning. A Wind Chill Advisory may be needed during this
timeframe.

Short term models continue to indicate an upper level trough over
the Rockies and Southwest United States moving into the Southern
Plains on Sunday and into the Middle and Lower Mississippi Valleys
Monday into Monday night. A lead shortwave trough is expected to
rotate through the region Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening,
resulting in the development of precipitation most if not all will
be frozen precipitation. Short term model soundings indicate this
precipitation will be in the form of snow over Northeast Arkansas,
the Missouri Bootheel, a mixture of sleet and snow over East
Arkansas and most of West Tennessee and Northwest Mississippi. and
rain, freezing rain, and sleet over Northeast Mississippi. Any
snow/sleet/ice accumulations are anticipated to be on the lighter
side with the first shortwave.

Confidence continues to increase with the main upper level trough
moving through the Lower Mississippi Valley Monday into Monday
night. A combination of favorable lift produced by the left exit
region of a 150 kt upper level jet, moderately steep to steep
700-500 mb layer mid-level lapse rates, and several hours in a
favorable dendritic growth zone suggest a potential for several
inches of snow across East and Northeast Arkansas, the Missouri
Bootheel and Northeast Mississippi. A first estimate at snowfall
would indicate 4-6 inches of snow with the higher amounts toward
the Tennessee River and Kentucky border. At the same time,
analysis of several model soundings suggest the second round of
precipitation will start out towards Monday morning as snow over
Northeast Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel then a sleet/snow
mixture over the remainder of the Mid- South then gradually
transitioning to all snow with Northeast Mississippi seeing the
mixed precipitation continuing through early Monday evening. The
Winter Storm Watch could eventually be upgraded to a Winter Storm
Warning over most of the area with Northeast Mississippi perhaps
being in an Winter Weather Advisory if the current forecast trends
persist.

Models indicate the wintry precipitation will come to an end late
Monday night into Tuesday morning as the upper level trough
departs into Middle Tennessee and Alabama. A combination of wintry
precipitation, very cold temperatures, and lingering gusty NNE
winds west of the Mississippi River may produce wind chill values
below zero late Monday night into Tuesday morning. A Wind Chill
Advisory may be needed during this timeframe also.

Long term models continue to indicate another upper level trough
moving through the Lower Mississippi Valley next Wednesday into
Thursday. Mixed precipitation looks possible again with this
second system despite some minor timing issues. This will continue
to be monitored and assessed in later forecasts. High pressure
will gradually build in towards the start of next weekend bringing
an end to the precipitation chances.

Low clouds continue to hang in across the forecast area. Hi-res
models aggressively clear out KJBR but plenty of doubts about
that despite some clearing to the west. Will show improvement
this evening at KJBR for a few hours to VFR before bringing MVFR
cigs right back in. Elsewhere expect MVFR cigs for the duration.
There is a small chance of improvement to VFR at KMEM this evening
but given recent trends and that latest satellite imagery that
seems unlikely. Some light fog and very light snow is possible
this afternoon reducing vsbys slightly. Expect precipitation
associated with the next system to start moving into the area
Sunday...mainly after 18z. Light sleet will develop during the
afternoon at KMEM. Expect north winds at 10-12 kts with gusts to
near 20kts through the period as well.

Wind chill values will fall into the single digits at times
through Wednesday. Below zero wind chills are possible across
mainly northern areas of the Mid-South Sunday through Tuesday
mornings. A wind Chill Advisory may be needed Tuesday morning for
widespread below zero wind chills.

There is increasing confidence in a significant winter storm late
Sunday into Monday. Significant accumulations of snow, sleet and
ice are possible across much of the Mid-South.

Another round of winter weather is possible Wednesday into
Thursday.
