A mix of IFR/LIFR conds prevail today across AR as a potent winter storm moves across the state. SN, sometimes heavy at times, is and has fallen at every TAF location as of 18z. BLSN is also impacting runway visibilities at most terminals. Expect improving conds to high-end IFR/low-end MVFR this evening, progressing from SW to NE, across the state. SN will finally wind down near sunset over Nrn terminals this evening. Dry conds are expected tonight. Significant accumulating SN has impacted all 7 terminals in the LZK CWA. && .PREV DISCUSSION...(ISSUED 531 AM CST Mon Feb 15 2021) DISCUSSION... Updated to include the 12Z aviation discussion below... AVIATION... MVFR to tempo LIFR flight conditions will be seen through this morning...with some slow improvements expected this afternoon and evening. Expect some SN...heavy at times this morning...gradually ending from SW to NE by this afternoon and evening. Some BLSN may also be seen. CIGs/VIS will be lowest this morning with the most intense area of SN...with CIGs/VIS increasing by tonight. Some VFR conditions may even be seen by the end of this TAF period. PREV DISCUSSION...(ISSUED 308 AM CST Mon Feb 15 2021) SHORT TERM...Today Through Thursday Night Very cold airmass remains in place across the CWA early this Mon morning...with temps in the single digits and teens for most locations. Wind chills have dropped below zero for most areas of the NRN half of the area...with single digits across SRN sections. Wind chills colder than 10 below have been observed across the far NW. Beyond this very cold air...areas of mainly snow have been seen off and on Sun evening through this morning...though some sleet is mixing in with this snow across SRN sections of the CWA. The last wave of wintry wx will be seen through about midday this Mon as an upper shortwave trough lifts NE over the state...and SFC low pressure lifts north from off the Gulf Coast near New Orleans into the SRN AL. Moisture will spread N/NW over the state...with primarily snowfall expected through the early afternoon hrs. Again...some sleet may mix in across the far S/SE...but should quickly transition to all snow by later this morning. Observed snow:liquid ratios by midnight have ranged from 10:1 to nearly 20:1 across the central into NWRN AR...with a bit lower ratios further south due to the added sleet. The transition to the much higher snow:liquid ratios looks to be bisecting the state generally along the I-30/US-67 corridor...with the higher ratios to the NW of this corridor. Coincidentally...the lower QPF amounts are expected to remain SE of this line. Even so...these higher ratios and higher QPF look to result in even higher snowfall amounts since the Sun even forecast update. Add in the fact there may be some locally intense snow bands with some convection possible...this has increased the confidence in a band of very heavy snow somewhere along/near this I-30/US-67 corridor. Amounts along this corridor will be in the 8-12 inch range...with lesser amounts to the NW due to less QPF...and lesser amounts to the SE where more sleet is possible. These areas could see 4-8 inches. Locally higher amounts could be seen in any region of the state due to more localized effects...and the possible convective nature. This storm will move NE of the region by this Mon evening...with precip ending from SW to NE by this evening. Some light snow or flurries may linger across the NRN counties this evening...but additional accumulations will be limited. Winds will relax...and clouds will clear by near sunrise Tue morning. This setup...combined with substantial snow-pack...will allow for significant radiational cooling. Lows by Tue morning will drop below zero for generally the NRN half...and WRN third of the CWA...with single digits expected elsewhere. SRLY flow will return briefly for Tue afternoon...but quickly transition back to the E/NE by Tue night. Temps should rebound a bit for Tue afternoon...with highs back in the teens and 20s. However...a new upper shortwave trough will be approaching the state in SW flow aloft...with precip returning to the forecast as early as Tue night. However...the most widespread activity will be seen Wed into Thu...before exiting Thu afternoon into Fri night. While details still need to be worked out in the next day or two...another round of significant winter wx is expected across most of the CWA during the middle of the week. Given how cold temps will be leading up to this mid-week system...and with significant winter wx likely remaining in place...expect winter wx impacts to persist through at least later this week. Any additional wintry wx will likely just delay the potential for improvements in travel hazards...especially considering there looks to be significant additional wintry precip possible mid week. No changes are expected with the current winter wx headlines. While additional headlines are likely for the mid week winter storm...will hold off issuing new watches/warnings at this time until the current headlines are expired to reduce message confusion. LONG TERM...Friday Through Sunday The work week wl close out on a much quieter note for the Natural State. The upper flow pattern bcms less amplified and returns to more zonal. Did not warm things up quite as fast as guidance is showing due to the expected lingering snow cover acrs the area. Some sleet may mix in with the snow across southern and southeast sections of the state. Storm total snowfall amounts will be highest along the I-30/US-67 corridor...where 6 to 10 inches are expected. Locally higher amounts over 10 inches could be seen. The northwest third of the area will see 4 to 8 inches...with the greater amounts in the highest terrain. The southeast third of the area will also see accumulations of 4-8 inches...with some of this including sleet. Obviously...this snowfall will create widespread travel hazards...with travel discouraged. Dangerous cold and very dangerous wind chills will also be seen through tonight. Highs today will be in the single digits across the north...teens in central...and low 20s across the south. With a brisk north wind...wind chills will likely dip well below zero for much of central...northern...and western Arkansas. Single digit wind chills will be seen across the south. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday Through Sunday Bitterly cold conditions will be seen Tuesday morning...with lows below zero for the northern half and western third of the area. Single digits are expected across the south. Wind chills will remain even colder...though the wind speeds will be lower than seen on Monday. Highs will only manage to warm into the teens and 20s Tuesday afternoon. A new storm system will bring another round of significant winter weather to the region late Tuesday night through Thursday. Several more inches of snow and sleet will be possible...with significant travel hazards expected to continue into the latter half of the week.
