Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Little Rock AR 1127 AM CST Wed Jan 27 2021 .AVIATION... Precip should be over at all sites. IFR/LIFR stratus will gradually lift into the afternoon/evening central and east, with some mvfr fog possible in the north early tomorrow morning. Otherwise, most areas should be VFR by this evening. && .PREV DISCUSSION...(ISSUED 400 AM CST Wed Jan 27 2021) SHORT TERM...Today Through Sunday An upper low will move through the area and bring good chances of precipitation. Radar indicates precipitation just moving into west Arkansas and this will spread to the east through the morning. Snow and sleet has been reported in the northwest corner of the state. Expect snow and sleet to move across the northern part of the state this morning with mainly rain central and south. Snow amounts will reach one to two inches in the higher elevations and near the Missouri border. This will be a quick moving system and should move out of the area this afternoon. High pressure will build over the area tonight through Thursday. This will make for some cold temperatures tonight with lows in the 20s, and in the mid to upper 20s Thursday night. Highs today will be in the mid 30s to mid 50s and in the lower 40s to lower 50s Thursday. LONG TERM...Sunday Through Sunday A broad upper ridge will be in place over the central CONUS Friday, with surface high pressure over much of the eastern half of the country. The upper ridge and surface high will push eastward as an upper trough advances across the Rockies and into the central and southern Plains with a surface storm system developing over TX/OK by Saturday morning. Increasing southerly flow Fri and Sat will allow temps to warm from highs in the 50s Fri to highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s Sat. Southerly flow will transport Gulf moisture into the area over this time as well, providing ample moisture for rain chances to increase as the low advances eastward through the day Sat. Thunderstorm chances will increase Sat as well, as the upper trough moves across the southern Plains, increasing forcing for ascent and lapse rates. Precip will end from west to east, exiting the state by Sun morning as the low continues to advance eastward. Highs Sun will be in the mid 40s to upper 50s, dropping to lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s by Mon morning, following the cold front. Another upper ridge will build over the western CONUS by Mon morning. As the upper ridge pushes eastward through the middle of next week, surface high pressure will expand over the eastern CONUS. Temps will slowly increase toward the middle of next week. Highs Mon will be in the lower to upper 50s and in the 50s to lower 60s by Wed. Low temps will increase from the upper 20s to lower 30s Mon to the 30s and lower 40s by Wed. Another upper trough will come ashore along the west coast the earlier part of the week, moving into the central to southern Plains towards the middle of the week. A surface storm system will develop and approach the state late Wed to early Thurs, returning rain chances toward the end of the forecast period.
