VFR conds will prevail this morning at all terminals except KLLQ where low stratus has IFR conds for the next couple hours. VFR conds will return for all terminals through this evening. Then attention turns to SHRA/TSRA moving across the state from S to N. Conds will become MVFR/IFR with heavier convection. Hail will be the primary thunderstorm hazard. Winds today will be light. && .PREV DISCUSSION...(ISSUED 356 AM CDT Wed Mar 24 2021) SHORT TERM...Today Through Thursday Night Quiet weather was ongoing this morning across AR. To our E, Tuesday's system was departing the OH Valley region while a new system moves across the Srn Rockies. Today, some low stratus will move into extreme SErn portion of the state with mostly sunny conditions expected elsewhere. Highs today should climb into the upper 60s N the upper 70s S on SW winds shifting to the SE later in the day. Changes will move our way beginning as early as tonight, aloft the aforementioned storm system over the Rockies will eject into the Plains. Large scale forcing for ascent will overspread the region from the W, further enhanced by diffluence aloft at H250, in combination with WAA/moisture advection from the S. These two features will combine to promote the development of showers and thunderstorms overnight into Thursday morning. Upper level energy will pivot across the region within SWrly flow during this time and with ample turning of winds with height, storms can better organize and potentially become strong to severe. During the overnight period, CAPE will be mainly elevated in the 1000-1500 J/kg range with EBWD of 50-55 knots. Surface dew points will increase substantially (55-60+) in the wake of a weak warm front lifting Nwrd, however lapse rates will only be modest -3 to -6. Given the environmental conditions, expecting large hail to be the primary threat, with damaging winds possible within the strongest of storms. The tornado potential will be low and confined to mainly the warm front interface. On Thursday, showers and thunderstorms will continue beneath H850- 700 WAA, moisture advection, and surface low progged to track over AR. The duration of rainfall from earlier in the day will play a vital role in afternoon conditional severe potential along and ahead of the cold front. Current thinking is the morning convection will continue into the late morning hours, mainly due to aforementioned H850-700 features, therefore should serve to stabilize the atmosphere somewhat over much of AR. This would certainly reduce the potential for severe weather later in the day. The main area of concern will be over Ern and SErn AR where morning precipitation will be lighter or non-existent, very similar to last weeks system, and thus allow the atmosphere to destabilize through the late morning and allow SBCIN to be overcome. Again, this threat is conditional to what happens earlier in the day regarding precipitation coverage. Latest CAM guidance suggest a small corridor of 1000-2000 J/kg SBCAPE will develop by mid-day over SErn AR. 65+ dew points are expected from about El Dorado to Pine Bluff to Stuttgart and points S and E. As a result, the potential exists for all modes of severe weather including large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes across the destabilization area. Further N and W, a few strong storms will be possible close to the surface low with large hail and damaging winds the main concern. The worst of the severe weather is expected to remain over portions of TN, MS, and AL. Heavy rainfall across the state could also lead to areas of flash flooding, especially if storms train over the same locations. Rainfall amounts through the period are expected to range from one to one and a half inches. Highs on Thursday are expected to top out near 60 over the Ozarks, to around 70 Cntrl, to mid 70s S and E. The system will move exit the state late Thursday with quiet weather returning Thursday night. Precipitation will end from SW to NE and lows are expected to fall into the 40s over much of AR with lower 50s over SE sections of the state. The overall pattern will stay active will H500 flow remaining SW/WSW into the long term period. LONG TERM...Friday Through Tuesday The long term PD will begin w/ broader long wave troughing over the Wrn half of the CONUS, and subtle ridging across the Upper Midwest. Cyclonic sfc flow will be noted over the Cntrl Plains, w/ a modest sfc pres grad overspreading the Srn Cntrl US in response. Srly sfc winds will promote WAA & poleward moisture transport through Fri and Sat, w/ settled condns prevailing Fri, and rain chcs becoming more prevalent by Sat. Sfc low pressure will lift N/Ewrd into the Midwest and a tailing cold frnt will sag S/wrd, entering N/Wrn AR some time later Sat night. PoPs are anticipated to increase in coverage ahead of this frnt invof WAA/isentropic ascent, and sfc convergence along the advancing cold frnt will promote an area of more enhanced precip chcs and rainfall accum, w/ the frnt quickly moving through the state by Sun morning. Following the FROPA from Sat night/early Sun morning, broad sfc high pressure will overspread the Srn Cntrl US and large scale subsidence will promote a PD of settled wx condns through the beginning of the new work week. High pressure will quickly slide E/wrd by the end of the PD w/ Srly flow returning to the fcst area once more.
