Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Little Rock AR 507 AM CST Sat Mar 13 2021 .DISCUSSION... Updated to include the 12Z aviation discussion below... && .AVIATION... Frontal boundary remains draped over WRN into SERN portions of the state early this Sat morning...with potential for low CIGs/VIS north of this front through at least this morning. NRN terminals will likely see degraded conditions through late tonight and Sun morning. Chances for SHRA/TSRA will remain highest across the NRN terminals this morning as well...with just some light precip possible further south. After a quiet period this afternoon/evening...additional chances for rain return late tonight. However...more organized SHRA/TSRA will be possible on Sun beyond this TAF period. && .PREV DISCUSSION...(ISSUED 347 AM CST Sat Mar 13 2021) SHORT TERM...Today Through Sunday Night The frontal boundary continues to sag SW early this Sat morning...now stretching from south of PBF...to south of ADF...then NW to just south of FSM. Temps north of this front remain in the 40s and 50s...with some low 60s near the boundary. South of the front...temps have remained generally in the mid to upper 60s early this Sat morning. An upper level disturbance passing over NRN AR into SRN MO has been generating SHRA/TSRA...with the most widespread coverage remaining north of AR. Even so...some areas have observed over an inch of rain through midnight...mainly along the NRN row of AR counties. However...the bulk of this activity has been lifting north AR...with more scattered convection noted early this Sat morning on the AR side. Some patchy fog was also noted in this region of the state...though some fog was also observed near the frontal boundary itself further south. Expect this trend to continue through the morning hrs...with best POPs remaining across NRN AR...and especially SRN MO. The precip should dissipate later this morning and especially by this afternoon as the upper disturbance lifts away from the area. The aforementioned frontal boundary will remain nearly stationary through tonight...with temps north of this boundary remaining cooler in the 50s and 60s. South of this front...temps will warm into the 70s to low 80s this Sat afternoon. Exactly where this front remains will dictate this temp variation...and any slight adjustments further north or south could effect afternoon highs significantly. As a result...certainty in temps this afternoon will be lowest near this boundary. Drier wx will be seen this afternoon into this evening...but chances for SHRA and some TSRA will increase late tonight and especially for Sun. A much more potent upper shortwave will move towards the state on Sun into Sun night...with a cold front moving east across the state. Expect SHRA/TSRA along and ahead of this front Sun into Sun night...eventually moving east of the CWA by late in the short term period. While a few strong storms could be seen with this front...the potential for seeing SVR storms remains uncertain. This is primarily due to limited instability. If SVR storms were to develop...the best chances will be across the SERN corner of the CWA Sun afternoon/evening ahead of the cold front...and along south of the aforementioned nearly stalled boundary as it attempts to lift north as a warm front. This is where there will be overlap of best SHR and the best instability...which could be a few hundred J/Kg given the latest data. If instability were to increase...say with some breaks in the cloud cover...or higher dewpts (which remain generally in the upper 50s to low 60s with latest data)...the threat for seeing SVR Wx would increase. The primary threat will be damaging winds given the wind energy associated with this system...with some threat for tornadoes as well given the low level SHR and favorable curved hodographs. Keep in mind though...this remains conditional on the instability...which remains limited at this time. Please refer to the latest forecasts over the next 24-36 hrs as new data is analyzed...for any increased potential for seeing increased instability and resulting higher threat for SVR storms. LONG TERM...Monday Through Friday Monday into Tuesday, the central Plains system will eject northeast as another highly-amplified upper trough digs into the Desert Southwest. A Pacific front associated with the departing system will begin lifting back north on Tuesday as mass fields respond to surface pressure falls ahead of the incoming trough. This will ensure temperatures remain above average through the first half of the work week. Model progs show rapidly increasing uncertainty in how the next system will evolve in the mid-week timeframe. The deterministic ECMWF depicts a slower and much deeper closed cyclone aloft digging into OK by Wednesday while the GFS suggests a more progressive and potentially open wave farther north across KS/MO. Based on consensus between the deterministic ECMWF/UKMET as well as the EC ensemble mean, will consider a slower and stronger solution is most reasonable attm. The resultant forecast has at least isolated rain/thunder associated with the warm front as it lifts through the state, although coverage is not expected to really ramp up until Tuesday night through Wednesday. Unlike this weekend's system, instability progs look more conducive for convection across much of the South, and even the faster solutions depict a reservoir of SBCAPE > 1000 J/kg over much of AR by Wednesday with CIN eroding through the day. It is challenging to pinpoint where the most destabilization will occur, particularly with lingering timing/placement differences seen in the guidance, but dynamic support appears quite sufficient for organized convection. A severe threat could very well materialize somewhere near or across portions of the area, so this will be monitored closely over the next several days. As the upper cyclone and its associated surface reflection move over or north of the area late Wednesday into Thursday, an attendant cold front will sweep through the state with rain and thunder ending by Thursday. A few strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible Sunday afternoon and evening...generally over the southeast third of the area. Damaging winds will be the primary threat with the strongest storms...with a threat for tornadoes also possible in this same region of the state. Expect the threat for severe weather to decrease by late Sunday night and especially Monday morning as the storm system exits the state to the east.
