AVIATION...

Low clouds/some fog will create MVFR/IFR conditions across
much of Arkansas today and tonight. While it will be mostly
dry today, some patchy light freezing drizzle/freezing rain
may develop tonight in portions of northern Arkansas. Winds
will vary from north to northeast at 5 to 10 mph. (46)

SHORT TERM...Today Through Wednesday Night

Pretty quiet this morning, with some freezing fog in localized
areas of the Ozark Mountains. Subfreezing air was confined to
northwest Arkansas, and more mild overall than Monday at this
time. The quiet part of this forecast will change.

Arctic high pressure was centered from the northern Rockies into
the upper Midwest, and this will build toward us in the near
term. A nearly stationary front in southern sections of the state
will drift into northern Louisiana. The final piece of the puzzle
will be a storm system heading from the southern Rockies into the
southern Plains, and this will cause headaches pretty soon.

It appears that the current lull will carry through the day and
maybe into this evening. However, later tonight into Wednesday,
areas of freezing drizzle/light freezing rain will likely develop
in about the northern two to three rows of counties. Amounts are
generally less than a tenth of an inch, but this could create a
light coat of ice on exposed objects, including roadways. A Winter
Weather Advisory may be necessary, and will let the day crew
get one last look at the situation before issuing.

The intensity of freezing rain ramps up Wednesday night as the
southwest system nears. By dawn Thursday, subfreezing air will be
all the way into the central counties, including the Little Rock
area. There could significant ice on the order of a quarter to
maybe half an inch from central into northeast Arkansas. For this,
have posted a Winter Storm Watch.

LONG TERM...Thursday Through Monday

Areas of ice will continue Thursday morning in parts of northern
and central Arkansas, with rain farther south. On the northern
edge of the precipitation shield, there could be a little light
snow or sleet, but this will probably not amount to much.
Precipitation will mostly come to an end by evening. With that,
here comes the really cold air.

Arctic high pressure to the north will overtake the region, and
will stick around for awhile. It looks dry and cold on Friday, but
storm systems riding the southern stream of the jet will trigger
at least chances of light snow on Saturday and again on Monday.
The former event looks like almost nothing, but the latter episode
has some potential to bring light accumulations to the state with
more moisture available.

The coldest air will be here Sunday and Monday mornings, with
projected low temperatures in the single digits and teens. Highs
will be in the teens and 20s. These readings are way, way below
average.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for a Large Part of Arkansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

There will be localized freezing drizzle and freezing fog in
portions of the Ozark Mountains this morning.

Later tonight, chances of light freezing rain will increase in
northern Arkansas. This includes areas north of Russellville and
Searcy. This could cause light accruals of ice to form on exposed
objects, including roadways. A Winter Weather Advisory may be
required.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday Through Monday

Areas of light freezing rain are expected to continue in northern
Arkansas on Wednesday, especially in the northern two to three rows
of counties. Light accruals of ice may occur.

The intensity of freezing rain will pick up Wednesday night into
Thursday in northern and central sections of the state. Icing could
be significant, with accruals over a quarter of an inch possible.
The buildup of ice may be enough to cause tree damage and power
outages in places.

Once precipitation ends by Thursday evening, it will turn much
colder Friday into the weekend and early next week. Low temperatures
by Sunday and Monday mornings will be in the single digits and
teens. Highs both days will mostly be in the teens and 20s.

Those without proper heating should make preparations, and
pets/animals who reside outside should be checked frequently or
brought into shelter if possible.

As temperatures go well below average, there could be some light
snow on Saturday and again Monday. It appears the former event
will not amount to much, with little to no accumulation. More
moisture will be available for the latter episode, with light
accumulations possible.
