What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Baltimore/Washington wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Feb 10, 10:35 AM EST, 2 hours 5 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 10, 10:35 AM EST, 2 hours 5 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
1035 AM EST Wed Feb 10 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
Canadian high pressure over the Upper Midwest will yield to
waves of low pressure impacting the region tonight through the
first half of Friday. Another area of low pressure will affect
the region Saturday into early Sunday before large Canadian high
pressure builds into the Great Lakes Region early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Mostly cloudy skies are expected to continue through this
morning with mostly dry condition. Precipitation will start to
edge into our region later this afternoon from the west and
southwest. Precipitation is still expected to begin as wintry
mix with a focus more on all rain down in parts of central
Virginia. There has been an increase trend of QPF further
norther with the early models in the 12Z suite which made
suggest increased snow totals for the first round of winter
precipitation. Further updates expected this afternoon.

To maintain continuity with previous forecast from yesterday, the
entire wintry precip event from late today into Fri morning was
decided to be handled by two separate events. First, precip
associated with a wave of low pressure, which is best seen on
the 850 mb height fields that crosses the area tonight and exits
the area to the east by 18Z Thu. A brief lull is expected
roughly between 15Z and 21Z Thu with another second round of
snow Thu night into Fri morning.

Since yesterday afternoon, there has been a dramatic shift to
the south with the axis of heaviest QPF with second wave of low
pressure with central VA now, generally south of I-64, getting
the heaviest amounts.

For tonight, it appears definite that all areas will see
between a quarter to half inch of liquid equivalent with the
first wave. However, there are mixed p-type issues involved that
reduces the amount of snow especially in the south. Snow will
likely mix with sleet and perhaps a little bit of fzra too
generally south of U.S. 33 with rain the main p-type across
Fredericksburg. Culpeper, and southern MD. Also, for Garrett and
Grant Counties, winter storm warning criteria is 6 inches in 12
hours, this isn't likely to happen based on our latest
projections, while mixed precip is likely over Pendleton and
Highland Counties cutting down on the snow totals.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Precip will taper off in intensity Thu morning, but there isn't
a dry slot that will completely shut off precip. Next wave of
low pressure starts entering the area Thu night with most of the
guidance making a dramatic shift to the south with the axis of
heaviest QPF. This should be a snow event for all with areas
generally south of I-64 getting the most snow. Precip ends by
18z Fri with cold and quiet conditions.

More wintry precip is on the horizon late Fri night. More on
that below.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A very active pattern continues into the long term period. A strong
and broad area of arctic high pressure remains anchored along the
US/Canada border. Cold air will remain locked in at the surface east
of the Appalachians for much of the forecast period. As a result,
temperatures do not get out of the 30s through at least the middle
of next week.

With cold air so locked into place, there will be a couple of shots
at some more wintry precipitation through Tuesday. On Saturday, an
area of low pressure will move along a stationary front through the
southeast and then quickly offshore. Precipitation north and west of
this low will fall as a wintry mix/freezing rain Saturday into early
Sunday morning. Should the current model guidance be correct, could
see a light coating of freezing rain with this system for much of
the area, and perhaps even some sleep mixing in further north and
west. This event will likely be too warm aloft for much (if any)
snow.

Precipitation tapers off Sunday, leading to a cool and dreary day.
Still likely to see some light precipitation here and there. Might
even start to see a few breaks of sun later in the afternoon. Cold
arctic air remain anchored over the region Sunday night through
Monday, with dry conditions expected during this time. Low
temperatures on Sunday night will widely be in the teens to single
digits.

Tuesday will be the next chance for wintry weather. A stronger area
of low pressure develops over the Gulf Coast before riding up the
Appalachians. Energy transfer off the east coast could lead to a
potentially significant winter weather event. At this point, the
pattern would favor a freezing rain event with this as well. Will
have to continue monitoring this as details become more finite as we
get closer to the event.

&&

.AVIATION /16Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...

I have adjusted times for wintry precipitation at all the big
three airports to account for the slower trend in precipitation.
Generally I a snow sleet mix for DCA and IAD at the start
around 00Z with snow mainly for BWI after 2Z. Further timing
changes may occur with the 18Z TAFS.

IFR conditions tonight with snow. Snow tapers off in intensity
Thu, but redevelops again Thu night into Fri with minimal
accumulations. IFR conditions expected to persist tonight
into Fri morning.

Flight restrictions likely on Saturday, as yet another winter storm
impacts the area. Freezing rain and sleet seem to be the most likely
precipitation types with this system, with snow looking very
unlikely. This system clears out early Sunday, before conditions
begin to improve through Monday, as high pressure leads to dry
conditions.

&&

.MARINE...
Winds have diminished by the time being, but NE winds are
expected to strengthen again Thu afternoon. SCA has been issued
for the southern waters.

Northerly winds continue Saturday and Sunday while residing north of
a stalled frontal zone. Wind gusts could approach small craft
criteria at times.
