Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
904 PM EDT Sat Apr 24 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
An area of low pressure will slide across the region tonight.
High pressure will then gradually build back into the region on
Sunday and will remain in control through the middle of next
week as it slides offshore. Temperatures will gradually warm and
become more summer-like through the middle of next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
9:00 PM UPDATE: Rain has filled in across much of the region at
this hour, and will continue through most of the overnight
tonight. Temperatures have fallen a good bit over the past
couple of hours as well, with readings already into the upper
40s to low 50s. Dew points have also risen a bit quicker than
originally anticipated. For that reason, have updated the hourly
temp/dew point values overnight, and adjusted min temps down a
couple notches in some spots. Otherwise, not much to change in
terms of the near-term forecast, as rain is arriving as
expected, so refer to the previous discussion below for more
details.
PREVIOUS DISCUSSION: There does appear to be some minor surface
instability mainly inside I-95 that may produce periods of
heavier rainfall and perhaps a few rumbles of thunder. Thus have
kept rainfall amounts slightly over one inch mainly east of
I-95 with amounts of three-quarters, up to one inch elsewhere.
Overnight temperatures should remain elevated compared to recent
nights, with 40s to lower 50s expected.
System pulls away to the northeast quickly on Sunday morning,
with any rain mostly ending during the pre-dawn hours. Patchy
mist/fog and some lingering drizzle may linger through the mid
morning hours, especially north and east of I-95. However do
expect things to dry out rather quickly as high pressure builds
back into the region. With the departing low and incoming high,
a tightening pressure gradient will result in a gusty northwest
wind developing during the afternoon. Downslope flow should
promote warmer temperatures with most areas reaching into the
60s, and some warmer spots approaching 70.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Dry conditions continue Sunday night. Overnight lows will once
again be on the chilly side; in the 30s and 40s across the
region. High pressure continues the dry weather trend on Monday.
In terms of temperature, Monday is more of a transition day
where temperatures will remain seasonable. However upper level
ridging over the Mississippi Valley will slowly begin to
traverse eastward late Monday which will set the stage for quite
the warming trend Tuesday into the middle and latter portions
of next week as high pressure keeps the region dry during this
time.
&&
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure at the surface and aloft will dominate the middle
portion of the week. The warmest day will likely be Wednesday (and
possibly similar Thursday) as the surface high progresses off the
southeast coast. Regardless, high temperatures will be in the 70s
and 80s Tuesday through Thursday, with lows in the 50s and
60s...about 10-15 degrees above normal. Shortwave troughs working
around the ridge could introduce a few showers or even a
thunderstorm into northwestern areas by late Wednesday into
Thursday, but most areas will be dry.
A deep trough will push eastward for the end of the week. Low
pressure will likely pass well to the north, with the trailing cold
front passing through the area Thursday night or Friday. Given
limited forcing and unfavorable diurnal timing, precipitation may be
less east of the Appalachian. However, some solutions suggest low
pressure could form along the boundary, which would result in higher
rain (and perhaps thunderstorm) chances.
If the trough is deep enough, showers may linger for a time, but it
does appear conditions will dry out next weekend. Temperatures will
likely fall back to near or below normal behind the cold front.
&&
.AVIATION /01Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
MVFR to IFR conditions over the next couple of hours will
quickly turn IFR into the overnight as low pressure results in
widespread rain across the region. Winds will remain mostly
light, but there could be an isolated thunderstorm embedded
within the rain, mainly for DCA, BWI, and MTN. Rain and low
clouds/mist pulls out Sunday morning, with VFR returning by
Sunday afternoon along with a gusty northwest wind perhaps
reaching 30 knots at times. Winds gradually relax with continued
VFR Sunday night through Monday night.
VFR conditions expected Tuesday and Wednesday with south-southwest
winds. Depending on the speed of the next system, a few showers and
thunderstorms could reach the area by late Thursday.
&&
.MARINE...
Storm system will cause increasing southerly flow through tonight,
with SCA gusts likely to overspread the waters from south to
north. Then, as a result from low pressure pulling away from the
region and high pressure building back in, Sunday will bring
more widespread SCA winds from the northwest. These winds may
linger into Monday as a secondary frontal boundary pushes
southward across the area. Winds likely relax Monday night under
high pressure.
South to southwest winds will take hold Tuesday as high pressure
gradually moves to the southeast coast. Small Craft Advisory
conditions may develop Wednesday and Thursday, especially on the
interior waters (e.g. Potomac, western shore estuaries) during the
daytime.
