Area forecast discussion, Apr 1, 4:02 AM EDT, 6 hours 15 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
402 AM EDT Thu Apr 1 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
Upper level low pressure will affect the area through tonight.
An expansive area of high pressure will settle from the central
to southeastern states for the Friday and Saturday. A weak cold
front will move into the area on Sunday and may stall nearby
through early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The back edge of the main precipitation shield has progressed to
just west of the Blue Ridge, and will continue to progress out of
the area over the next few hours. Most locations should be dry by
around daybreak. Low-level cold advection will continue today in
post-frontal northwesterly flow as the upper level trough swings in
aloft. Daytime heating beneath the cooler air moving in aloft in
association with the upper trough/closed low will allow limited
instability to develop later this morning, with most model guidance
showing around 100-200 J/kg of surface based CAPE across the area.
Isolated to widely scattered instability driven showers are expected
to develop beneath the upper level low later this morning, and
continue through the afternoon hours. POPs were upped to account for
this activity. While most of the day will be dry in any given spot,
a brief downpour can't be ruled out in association with these
showers. With steep low-level lapse rates and cold air aloft, a
little graupel may even mix in with some of the stronger convective
showers, especially to the north and west of I-95. Outside of any
showers, mostly cloudy skies are expected along with gusty
northwesterly winds. Highs today should reach into the 40s to near
50 around midday, and may even fall back a few degrees this
afternoon.

Skies should begin to clear out tonight, but strong northwesterly
flow will continue. Those northwesterly winds will advect an
unseasonably cold airmass into the area, with temperatures dropping
into the 20s overnight, despite the winds maintaining decent mixing.
Wind chills are expected to drop into the teens to the northwest of
I-95, with lower 20s in the metro areas.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
The upper level low will very slowly shift off to our east on
Friday. Subsidence on the backside of the departing trough will
provide dry conditions. Gusty northwesterly flow will be maintained,
which will continue to transport cool continental air into the
region. Mostly sunny skies are expected, with highs only in the 40s
for most. When combined with the gusty northwesterly winds, wind
chills should stay below 40 all day.

High pressure will start to build in from the west Friday night,
allowing winds to finally start to weaken a bit. Clear skies are
expected, with lows in the 20s to lower 30s. High pressure will
slide to our south on Saturday as we enter a northwesterly flow
regime aloft. A weak disturbance embedded in northwesterly flow will
pass overhead during the day Saturday. This should lead to an
increase in high cloud cover during the afternoon hours following a
sunny start to the day. However, no precipitation is expected. Highs
on Saturday will be appreciably warmer, but still a touch below
normal for early April, with highs mainly in the mid-upper 50s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The upper level pattern will be somewhat blocky through the long
term, with a meandering closed low off the New England coast,
ridging though the nation's mid-section, and another digging
trough potentially closing off in the western US. The short
version of the forecast is that mainly dry conditions are
expected with temperatures near or above normal. There are a few
caveats in the details though.

A weak cold front (more of a wind shift) will enter the area
Sunday. This could add some cloud cover, increase wind gusts,
and produce an isolated shower or sprinkle. Temperatures should
be a little warmer than Saturday.

For Monday through Wednesday, the position of this remnant
boundary will depend on the upper level features. If the upper
low is closer to New England, the boundary may remain nearby
with temperatures close to normal. If the low if farther away,
ridging will be able to expand eastward and temperatures could
be 5-10 degrees above normal.

By Wednesday, a weak low pressure system will be near the Great
Lakes and could provide enough forcing for some showers, but
rain probabilities are low at this time.

&&

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
MVFR ceilings and rain are ongoing at the terminals as of 330 AM.
Rain should gradually progress out of the area from west to east
around or shortly after daybreak, with conditions improving to VFR
shortly thereafter. A few isolated showers may develop later this
morning into early afternoon, potentially leading to a brief period
of rain. With cold air aloft, these showers could even potentially
mix with graupel. Otherwise, the main story will be gusty
northwesterly winds which are expected to persist through the day
tomorrow. Continued VFR conditions and lighter winds are expected
Friday night through Saturday.

A weak cold front will move into the area Sunday. At this time,
it appears conditions will most likely remain VFR, although
northwest winds could gust in excess of 20 kt behind the front.

&&

.MARINE...
The cold front has cleared the area, and gusty northwest winds have
moved in behind the front. A Gale Warning remains in effect through
tonight. Small Craft Advisories will likely be needed tomorrow as
strong northwesterly flow continues over the waters. Winds should
start to subside a bit Friday night, with sub-SCA level winds
expected by Saturday.

A weak cold front will move into the area on Sunday.
Northwesterly winds may reach SCA criteria behind the front.
Northwest winds will continue into Monday but may be a touch
lighter.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Gusty northwest winds will persist through Friday. Blowout
conditions at low tide could occur tonight into Friday,
especially on the western shore of the northern Chesapeake Bay.
