.SYNOPSIS...
Strong low pressure will move into New England today and the
cold front associated with it will pass through our area this
morning into early this afternoon. High pressure will build
overhead for tonight into Saturday, before shifting offshore
later Saturday through Saturday night. Another cold front will
pass through the area Sunday and high pressure will return for
early next week. Low pressure may impact the area during the
middle portion of the week, and another cold front is likely to
pass through during this time.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
...Update to the record highs for today, March 26th in the climate
section...
Potent low pressure is passing by to our west early this morning
and the cold front associated with the low is moving into West
Virginia. A southerly flow ahead of the boundary has allowed for
warm and moist air from the southeastern CONUS to move overhead.
Therefore, it is quite warm for this time of year, but there
will be plenty of clouds along with scattered showers early this
morning. The breeze will gradually pickup from the south as the
gradient strengthens in response to the low passing by to our
west. Southerly winds will gust around 20 to 30 mph for most
places, but higher along the ridge tops above 3kft early this
morning due to the strong low-level jet.
The cold front will pass through the Allegheny and Potomac
Highlands by 9 AM, then through the I-81 corridor by 10 AM, the
Washington and Baltimore Metro areas between 11 am and 1 pm, and
eventually through southern MD by 3 PM. The southerly wind will
shift to the west and perhaps just south of west behind the
boundary and it will turn out quite gusty. This is because cold
advection in the lower-levels will be offset by sunshine and
heating at the surface, increasing the mixing layer. With the
strong low moving off to our north, this will allow for strong
winds in the low-level to be within the mixing layer. The
strongest winds are expected over the Blue Ridge and Allegheny
Highlands, and the nearby valleys just east of the Highlands
where gusts around 60 mph are expected. Elsewhere, gusts will
most likely range from 35 to 45 across southern MD and the
Virginia Piedmont, and 45 to 55 mph across the rest of the area
(with the highest gusts most likely closer to the Mason-Dixon
Line and eastern Panhandle of WV, where the stronger wind field
is). A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the mountains,
and a Wind Advisory is in effect for the metro areas, northern
and central VA, eastern VA, and northern/central MD. The
strongest winds should be through mid-afternoon, then winds
should gradually dissipate later this afternoon into this
evening as the gradient subsides and the mixing layer decreases.
The Wind Headlines may be able to be cancelled a few hours early
in several locations.
The dry advection, downsloping flow and sunshine will cause
temps to spike up today before the cold advection takes over.
Max temps will range from the 50s and 60s in the mountains, to
the 70s across most valleys west of the Blue Ridge, to near 80
in Washington and Baltimore, to the lower and middle 80s in
central Virginia into the VA Piedmont and southern MD.
High pressure will build overhead tonight, bringing dry and
cooler conditions, but min temps should still be above climo for
this time of year.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will continue to bring dry conditions Saturday and
sunshine and light winds. Max temps will be in the 70s for most
areas, above climo.
The high will move offshore Saturday night and a return flow
will develop ahead of the next cold front. The return flow will
usher in more mild conditions, but also more moisture. Showers
are likely, especially after midnight.
A potent cold front associated with the northern stream of the
jet will pass through the region Sunday. The upper-level trough
axis will swing from positive toward a neutral tilt during this
time. At the same time, the low-level wind field will be
strengthening and the mid-level wind field will be potent ahead
of the upper-level trough axis. Guidance has slowed down the
passage of the front until Sunday afternoon and early evening.
Therefore, with the front moving through around peak heating
combined with a warm and moist airmass in place, this will
increase instability some. The dynamics and shear profiles
certainly support a threat for strong to severe thunderstorms,
and it will be a matter of how much instability can develop.
Given the latest trends, this does increase confidence in
regards to the threat for strong to severe storms. Damaging
winds will likely be the primary threat.
Blustery northwest winds will develop behind the cold front
Sunday night along with a return of drier conditions.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A mid-upper level trough will rapidly depart off to our east on
Monday. Cooler air will advect in on northwesterly flow at the
surface, but the cool advection will only drop temperatures back to
seasonable levels (highs around 60). Sunny skies and northwesterly
winds are expected.
A trough moving onshore in the Pacific Northwest on Monday will
rapidly progress off to the east while also digging southward,
reaching the center of the country by Tuesday. As this system digs
southward, a cutoff upper disturbance previously deposited along the
Gulf Coast states will start to feel the influence of the digging
trough. This should act to draw the upper level cutoff northeastward
toward our area by later Tuesday into Tuesday night. As a result,
increasing clouds along with some chances for showers will move in
by later Tuesday into Tuesday night. The aforementioned much larger
trough will continue to progress rapidly off to the east, eventually
reaching here by Wednesday Night or Thursday. This trough will drive
a strong cold front through the area on Thursday. Some precipitation
may be possible ahead of the front, and it should turn sharply
colder by Thursday night, with lows potentially dropping back below
freezing.

.AVIATION /07Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A south to southwest flow will increase ahead of a cold front
this morning. MVFR cigs are possible ahead of the boundary.
Winds will increase behind the cold front from the west with
gusts around 35 to 45 knots expected. The highest gusts are most
likely to be around KMRB, KBWI, and KMTN.
Winds will diminish quickly this evening as high pressure
settles overhead. Light winds are expected Saturday with VFR
conditions. A return flow will bring showers, especially late
Saturday night into Sunday along with subVFR cigs/vsbys. A cold
front will pass through the terminals Sunday, and a few strong
to severe storms are possible. Gusty northwest winds along with
VFR conditions are expected behind the boundary for Sunday
night.
VFR conditions are expected on both Monday and Tuesday, with gusty
winds out of the northwest on Monday.

.MARINE...
Southerly winds will increase and turn to the southwest this
morning with gusts around 20 to 30 kt most likely. A cold front
will pass through late this morning into early this afternoon.
Winds will shift to the west and perhaps just south of west
behind the cold front. The strongest winds will be thwarted some
by the colder waters. Therefore, the Gale Warning is in effect
for the northern Bay and the Tidal Potomac River as well as
the Patuxent River, where temps will be a little warmer and the
mixing layer will be deeper. Farther south over the middle
portion of the Bay, and SCA is in effect. Gusts will range from
around 20 to 25 knots across the middle Bay to close to 40 knots
across the northern Bay and nearby inlets as well as the upper
Tidal Potomac River.
Winds will gradually diminish tonight. An SCA is in effect for
the waters this evening. High pressure will settle overhead late
Friday night before moving offshore Saturday. A cold front will
pass through Sunday, and a few strong to severe storms are
possible, mainly in the afternoon. Also, gusty northwest winds
will develop behind the cold front. An SCA will likely be needed
Saturday night into Sunday, and a Gale Warning may be needed
late Sunday and Sunday night.
SCA level winds appear possible on Monday. Winds should drop to sub-
SCA levels on Tuesday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
An onshore flow will increase early this morning ahead of a
cold front. This will cause anomalies to increase, and minor
tidal flooding is possible near times of high tide through
midday. For now, the latest forecasts lean toward caution stage
vs minor flooding since the stronger southerly flow may be
brief before turning offshore later this afternoon.
