Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will approach from the Ohio Valley and
cross the area through this evening. Low pressure will develop
along the front and strengthen as it tracks up the coast into
New England Saturday. High pressure will then build south of the
region once again through the first half of next week before
another potential storm system approaches the latter half of
next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Satellite imagery and surface analysis depicts low pressure
churning over the Midwest this morning, with an associated cold
front stretching from north to south from the Ohio Valley and
across the Panhandle of Florida. Plenty of mid to high level
clouds streaming over the area this morning as we reside on the
eastern flank of a large upper trough/low and the upper jet
approaches from the south.

Temperatures will be held in check today compared to previous
days with the added cloud cover and increasing rain chances as
the front presses eastward. Temperatures this afternoon will
hold in the 30s across the Alleghenies, with 40s to low 50s
further east into the metro areas. Showers associated with the
front will encroach on the Allegheny Front early this afternoon,
making eastward progress into the I-81 corridor around mid
afternoon, and the I-95 corridor during the late afternoon to
early evening hours.

The colder air across the Alleghenies will support rain/snow mix
initially, but should wet bulb down to support all snow an hour
or two after precip onset. This would support sub advisory level
snow across the higher elevations of the Potomac and Allegheny
Highlands, primarily above 2000 feet. Minor accumulations will
also be possible along the Blue Ridge Mountains in central
Virginia, again ridges above 2000 feet will be most favorable
for snow.

The front and associated showers will press eastward this
evening and the first half of the overnight period, with the
front moving east of the Bay an hour to two after midnight.
Drier conditions are expected as the front pulls through the
area and temperatures fall into the 20s to middle 30s. With the
gradient wind expected to remain on the lighter side behind the
front, could be some patchy fog with the increased low level
saturation, as well as some icy spots on those surfaces that are
unable to dry out before temperatures drop. Best chance for icy
spots will reside along and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains,
where those sub freezing temperatures will be most prevalent.
With middle 30s holding on in the metro areas, thinking the
threat for icy conditions would be limited.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Upper low over Ohio Saturday morning will move across PA into
the Northeast states Sat night. Cyclonic vorticity and cold air
aloft/steep lapse rate environment are expected to support
additional convective precip Saturday afternoon into early
evening. While sfc temps will remain above freezing east of the
Blue Ridge Sat, freezing levels are expected to be just a few
hundred feet above the ground, which would support snow showers
likely making it to the sfc with a little snow accumulation
on grassy and/or elevated surfaces not out of the question.
Snow showers over the Appalachians will pick up in intensity Sat
afternoon and evening with snow accumulation potentially
reaching advisory criteria. Upper trough axis will cross the
area in the evening Sat with any lingering precip east of the
Blue Ridge mtns ending. Winds will be on the increase late Sat
and Sat night as low pressure deepens over northern New England
with wind chills in the 20s for most, except much colder in the
mtns.

Snow showers will continue off and on across the mountains Sun
into Mon as flow remains strongly cyclonic with a brief lull
Sun afternoon as shortwave ridging builds overhead before the
next upper low approaches Sun night.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Strong upper trough pushes through the area on Monday, bringing the
chance for some upslope snow showers along/west of the Allegheny
Front. Otherwise, this appears to be mostly dry for the rest of the
region. Meanwhile, surface high pressure begins to build over the
southeast. Temperatures expected to be near seasonal averages, with
highs in the low to mid 40s. Dry weather expected to continue into
Tuesday, owing to zonal flow aloft and surface high pressure still
setup over the southeast.

Inauguration Day (Wednesday) and Thursday are a little more unclear
at this point, being towards the end of the forecast period. Most
guidance keeps the area dry Wednesday. However, there does appear to
be a cold front progged to sweep across the region. This should be
mostly dry though, as it doesn't really tap into any moisture
source, and much of the upper energy appears to stay to our north.
That being said, it is still 6 days out or so, meaning that things
can change, so will continue to monitor the forecast closely. In
fact, some guidance does bring some rain showers to the region,
which is why we will carry slight chance POPs for now.

Then for Thursday, as mentioned before, very uncertain at this
point. An upper low ejecting out of the southwestern U.S. will be
moving generally in our direction. Many scenarios are possible with
this system, and there are far too many uncertainties at this point.
The main thing is, there may be some cold air to work with in
portions of the forecast area, potentially leading to wintry
weather. Stay tuned to the latest forecast as the time comes
closer.

.AVIATION /16Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
VFR conditions this morning and early afternoon will
deteriorate mid afternoon through the overnight hours as a cold
front moves into the area with increasing shower chances.
MVFR/IFR VIS/CIGS will overspread the terminals during this
time, with some improvement after 06z in the wake of the front.
Light southeasterly winds today will turn southwest through this
evening, then eventually westward as the front crosses, all the
while remain light at 10 knots or less.

Clear early on Sat with bkn MVFR cigs developing midday Sat as
upper low traverses the area. RA/SN showers possible Sat
afternoon. Strengthening winds late Sat and Sat night as front
exits the area. Gusts to 25 kt Sun into Mon.

VFR conditions expected at all terminals Monday and Tuesday, as high
pressure builds in to our south. Winds will generally be out of the
west, gusting to 10-20 knots Monday and most of Tuesday. By Tuesday
afternoon/evening, winds start to turn out of the southwest ahead of
an approaching cold front.

.MARINE...
A cold front will approach from the west today as winds trend
out of the southeast at around 10 knots, with isolated gusts up
to 20 knots not out of the question. The front will cross the
waters late this evening and during the early overnight period,
with showers diminishing in its wake. Winds will turn westerly
during this period, but remain sub SCA.

Winds will strengthen late Sat and Sat night in response to
tightening pressure gradient around low pressure over Maine and
Gulf of St. Lawrence. SCA winds will persist through Mon
evening, except for a brief lull Sun night as gradient relaxes
somewhat and winds become more westerly.

Gusty winds out of the west on Monday and much of Tuesday may need
Small Craft Advisories. Winds turn more southwesterly Tuesday
afternoon/evening ahead of an approaching cold front. Gusts likely
still near the SCA criteria.

Water levels are expected to reach caution stage at Annapolis
and Southwest Waterfront early this evening. While levels may
reach borderline minor threshold, storm surge models are likely
