What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Baltimore/Washington wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Feb 20, 9:06 PM EST, 5 hours 19 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 20, 9:06 PM EST, 5 hours 19 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
906 PM EST Sat Feb 20 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the central U.S. will build eastward over
the area through Sunday. Low pressure will pass to our north
Sunday night into Monday. High pressure returns in its wake
through the middle of the week. Another low pressure system may
impact the region towards the end of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
High pressure will move toward the central Appalachians
tonight. Winds will lighten and skies will clear. There may be
enough persisting northwest flow just off the deck to preclude
maximum radiational cooling, but temperatures rivaling the
coldest so far this winter (which still isn't that cold compared
to an average winter) are expected. Much of the area will be in
the teens, with lower 20s in the urban centers and near the
water, and single digits in the higher elevations. Single digits
could also occur in places that fully decouple and snow/ice
pack still exists. With the slackening winds, think most of the
mountains should remain above wind chill advisory criteria,
though a few of the highest exposed peaks could have a period of
-10F wind chills.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will build eastward across the region and into the
Atlantic on Sunday. Combined with less wind and some weak warm
advection, Sunday will have less bite than today as highs reach
the upper 30s and lower 40s.

Low pressure will move into the Great Lakes Sunday night while a
weak cold/occluded front will push eastward ahead of an
positively tilted upper trough. Clouds will increase, but low
temperatures should still be below freezing in most places.
Southerly winds will increase ahead of the incoming system, but
the residual cold air may be hard to dislodge before
precipitation arrives. There's still model spread in when
precipitation onset will be. The later in the morning it is, the
more likely that more areas will just see rain, or very minimal
wintry weather. An earlier onset would produce a more widespread
period of snow. Sleet and freezing rain aren't out of the
question, but would likely be brief without any reinforcing
source of cold/dry air. Even with a snowier solution,
temperatures should inch up through the midday hours. Overall
QPF amounts aren't too heavy, and with the marginal thermal
environment, accumulations will likely be limited east of the
Potomac Highlands. The outcome should become clearer as we draw
closer.

Precipitation will exit rapidly to the east during the afternoon
and early evening, although a few upslope snow showers will
linger. Overnight lows will drop back into the upper 20s/lower
30s.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A few lingering areas of upslope rain/snow showers is possible
for our extreme western zones for the morning and early
afternoon hours on Tuesday as a shortwave trough passes. After,
an area of high pressure will build in from the deep south,
allowing us to dry out and southerly flow bringing in warmer
temperatures for the middle part of the work week.

Weak cold front will pass through the area late Wednesday night and
into early Thursday morning. Should only see some isolated instances
of rain for most areas with some flurries for the higher elevations
possible. No significant impacts are expected with this system. High
pressure will briefly move in for Thursday during the day, allowing
for dry conditions. Monitoring a low pressure system for late Friday
night and into Saturday that could bring some moisture to the
southern half of our CWA. Thermal profile differences in the models
is causing some disagreement with ptype, depending on the exact
location of the high pressure spinning around the northeast,
dictating how much colder air gets driven down into our CWA and how
far. Continue to follow along at weather.gov/lwx/winter for the
latest guidance on any potential winter weather impacts to the
area.

&&

.AVIATION /02Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
VFR conditions with light winds can be expected from late
tonight through Sunday night as high pressure moves across the
area.

Conditions likely deteriorate at least to MVFR if not briefly
IFR on Monday as another low pressure brings a period of rain,
possibly beginning as snow. Conditions will then improve again
Monday night as the system pulls away.

VFR conditions expected for Tuesday and Wednesday with light winds
out of the SW at around 5-10 knots before shifting NW late
Wednesday.

&&

.MARINE...
The winds will gradually diminish tonight into Sunday morning,
and the advisories will likewise peal back. High pressure will
bring light winds through Sunday, but then southerly winds will
increase late Sunday night into Monday ahead of the next low
pressure system. SCAs will likely be needed for portions if not
all waters. A weak front will pass by Monday evening and winds
will shift to the west, but they may not be too strong since
there won't be a strong surge of high pressure.

No marine hazards expected Tuesday and Wednesday with light winds
out of the SW Tuesday, before shifting NW late Wednesday.
