The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Baltimore/Washington wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Jan 4, 9:30 PM EST, 6 hours 5 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Jan 4, 9:30 PM EST, 6 hours 5 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 930 PM EST Mon Jan 4 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A weak low pressure will pass south of the region tonight into Tuesday. A cold front will cross the region late Tuesday and Tuesday evening. High pressure will build in for Wednesday and Thursday before another low pressure passes to the south Friday. High pressure again returns for the weekend ahead of another system threatening the region next Monday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/... On the synoptic scale, a trio of upper lows are noted in mid- level water vapor imagery. The Mid-Atlantic region generally sits in between these features as a shortwave tracks along the North Carolina/Virginia border while the other systems remain in the vicinity of New England. The 00Z KIAD sounding sampled an atmosphere with lackluster wind fields from the surface to 300-mb with a near saturated layer up to 775-mb. This has supported the weak radar returns which has resulted in a few sprinkles moving toward the I-95 corridor this evening. Farther west where colder air is in place, scattered snow showers are possible from the Blue Ridge and Catoctin Mountains westward as the trough slips by to the south. Ultimately there is not much low-level forcing with the system, but there should be enough low-level convergence to churn out such showers. Accumulations in the valleys will be more difficult to come by given marginal boundary layer temperatures. However, a light coating cannot be ruled out in such locations. In terms of temperatures, mild conditions continue for early January standards with lows around 8 to 12 degrees above climatology. This includes above freezing numbers along the I-95 corridor from central Virginia up into District as well as southern Maryland. On Tuesday, as the low over southern Virginia heads out to sea, the low over New England will approach from New York. Again, very meager forcing, but with plenty of moisture and just a little instability, enough for some mostly sprinkles/flurries to occur. Otherwise, plenty of clouds and light winds on Tuesday, with temps rebounding only to the lower 40s. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... The cold front and shortwave presently over the northern Plains will finally help punt this whole mess away from the region Tuesday night. This may enhance upslope snow showers, but should put an end to flurry/sprinkle activity east of the mountains and help clear the skies partly. It will also kick up the wind a bit. Lows Tuesday night will be in the 20s to lower 30s. Sunshine should return to much of the area Wednesday as high pressure finally builds in behind the cold front and shortwave. It will be breezy however, but the sun may help it feel less brisk and chilly than it otherwise might. Highs will again be in the low-mid 40s. Mostly clear skies expected Wednesday night with high pressure. Lows should be mostly in the 20s. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... High pressure will be nearby for the area on Thursday. Clouds will begin to roll in during the day as high pressure exits and our next potential disturbance tracks NE towards the area. Temperatures for the early part of the extended will continue to be seasonable for this time of year. Could see the possibility for some brief upslope snow Wednesday into Thursday along and west of the Allegheny Front. Surface low pressure along with a cut off upper level low will be moving across the Deep South towards the Carolinas. Latest guidance has the surface low reaching the Carolina coastline by early Friday morning. For now, most model guidance keeps the heavy source of moisture to our south with this system. As always, tracking of this future coastal low will dictate impacts to our area. A more northern shift in the track will increase the likelihood for impacts in our CWA (mainly the southern portions). If a northern shift occurs, wintry precipitation is possible with a few depending factors favoring this setup. Colder air would need to be nudged further south and east along with the track of the low. For now, model guidance keeps our chances minimal but non-zero at this time for wintry impacts for mainly our southern areas. Will continue to track model trends and thermal patterns for this system. As the low intensifies Saturday, it will move offshore and high pressure will build in for the rest of the weekend. && .AVIATION /02Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Weak upper-level system crossing the region tonight and Tuesday will result in some periods of MVFR cigs. Spotty rain/snow showers could also occur, especially near CHO tonight and then further north towards the metro on Tuesday, but minimal if any impacts are anticipated. Cigs should clear out Tuesday night behind a cold front, which will provide building high pressure and VFR conditions for Wednesday. However, winds will gust 20-25 knots from the northwest at times as high pressure builds in. Winds should relax Wednesday night. VFR conditions expected Thursday with high pressure overhead. Could see a brief uptick in NW winds as high pressure exits but VFR conditions will continue into Friday given the latest model guidance. A northern shift in the low pressure system to our south would increase the likelihood for sub-VFR conditions for Friday later in the day. && .MARINE... Light winds expected over the waters through Tuesday. Tuesday night into Wednesday, a cold frontal passage and high pressure building behind it should result in fairly widespread but relatively low-end SCA conditions. These winds should diminish Wednesday night. No marine hazards expected for Thursday. As low pressure tracks to our south and east, brief periods of SCA criteria winds could penetrate our waters Friday into Friday night with northerly winds. && .TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... Given the weak surface winds across the region, some lower Bay water has begun to pile up over the tidal sites. Anomalies are running between 1.25 and 1.75 feet with has brought many tidal forecasts into Action. Will need to monitor the Washington, D.C. waterfront around high tide tonight with the current forecast just short of Minor at midnight. Additionally, the next tide at Straits Point will also approach Minor by Tuesday morning. A gradual uptick in northwesterly winds should lower tidal anomalies throughout the day on Tuesday. && .LWX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... DC...None. MD...None. VA...None. WV...None.
