.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will reside over the region today, shifting offshore
this evening. A winter storm will impact the region late tonight
through Monday. High pressure will then return for the middle
portion of next week before another area of low pressure may impact
the region late in the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure sitting atop the Mid Atlantic Region this morning
as low pressure is situated across the central U.S., just west
of the Missouri River Valley. Locally, skies are sunny with some
cirrus clouds streaming into our southwestern zones across west
central Virginia. Temperatures are ranging in the middle 20s to
lower 30, with the teens holding on in the mountains.
For the remainder of the day, skies will trend mostly sunny as
mid to high level clouds stream into the region ahead of the
next system. A northwest breeze will continue to be slightly
elevated into this afternoon, gusts to around 15 mph at times,
but expected to diminish toward evening with the high overhead.
Highs this afternoon will top out in the upper 20s across the
Alleghenies, with 30s to near 40 degrees much elsewhere.
Have upgraded portions of the region from a Winter Storm Watch
to a Winter Storm Warning earlier this morning, and we will be
assessing the incoming 12z guidance before making the decision
on additional Advisories/Warnings later this morning/afternoon.

The low pressure system will move along the Ohio Valley tonight.
A surge of warm advection aloft in advance of the surface
low/closed upper low tracking into the Ohio Valley will start to
overspread the area from southwest to northeast over the course
of the nighttime hours. Snow should move into the central
Shenandoah Valley and western parts of the Virginia Piedmont
around midnight, before onward into D.C. around or just after
daybreak on Sunday. A steady period of snow is expected across
the entire area Sunday in association with this push of warm
advection. A general 4-6 inches of snow is expected across the
area with this round of snow. A Winter Storm Watch remains in
effect for most of the forecast area. Once we have observed the
latest guidance and tweaked our forecast to account for snow
accumulations and any ice accumulation, we will decide which
zones would be the most impacted by snow and/or ice, then we
will issue advisories or warnings during this upcoming dayshift.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A dry slot is expected to move in Sunday evening. Precipitation
should be much lighter, and may fall largely in the form of
freezing drizzle/light freezing rain, with light snow and sleet
also possible. Not much additional snow accumulation is
expected Sunday Night, although there may be a light glaze of
ice in many areas. Warmer air may work into southern Maryland,
where a changeover to plain rain will likely occur.
By Monday, the upper trough/low will be moving overhead and the
surface low will transfer to the coast, likely somewhere between
Cape Hatteras and the Delmarva. As colder air moves in aloft
associated with the upper trough and moisture deepens once again,
precipitation type will likely transition to snow, though some rain
is possible depending on how far warm air works inland. This part of
the forecast remains tricky, because additional snow accumulations
will be dependent on the evolution of the low and mesoscale
features. So additional snow totals could range from being very
minimal to having a localized zone of additional moderate or heavy
snow. Snow will likely taper off Monday night as the low pulls away
to the northeast.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A broad upper trough with multiple embedded shortwaves will be in
the process of lifting up toward New England on Tuesday morning. A
pronounced deep coastal low is likely to reside a couple hundred
miles off the New Jersey coast at this point. The 00Z GEFS ensemble
low plots depicts some variation in this solution, but most
ensembles are fairly deep (988 to 994 mb). Depending on the position
of this cyclone center, some remnant wrap-around snow may still be
falling over areas of the Mid-Atlantic. Conditions are forecast to
gradually dry out through the day as high pressure builds to the
west. The exception would be some upslope snow showers along and
west of the Allegheny Front. With mostly cloudy conditions through a
good chunk of the day, high temperatures may struggle to escape the
30s with 20s across the higher terrain. Brisk northwesterly winds
will lower wind chills below freezing with such breezes continuing
into the overnight hours. While lows should bottom out in the
low/mid 20s, the added wind will make it feel more like the teens
with single digits to slightly below zero numbers in the mountains.
Global models show an additional shortwave swinging southeastward
through the region early Wednesday bringing a reinforcing shot of
cold air. This will maintain the rather potent negative height
anomaly over the northeastern U.S. However, a surface ridge settling
over the Eastern Seaboard should keep conditions dry and seasonable
on Wednesday with brisk northwesterly winds continuing. If winds
slacken enough overnight, it could be a rather chilly night,
particularly given any substantial snow pack from the Sunday/Monday
system. A warming trend is anticipated by later in the work week as
heights rebound over the eastern U.S. A cold front is progged to
near the Appalachian Chain by Friday morning. In advance of this
boundary, mild temperatures are forecast with highs in the 50s by
Friday. Some of the ensembles even show the potential for some low
60s so this warm up bears watching. Aside from the increased warmth,
showers will return to the picture on Friday with the frontal
passage. A cool down will ensue in the wake for next weekend.

.AVIATION /16Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure over the terminals today will yield lighter
northwest winds through this afternoon and VFR conditions.
Snow will gradually overspread the area tonight into early
Sunday morning from southwest to northeast. Sub VFR conditions
are likely during the day Sunday into Sunday night in
association with low ceilings and snow (during the day
Sunday)/freezing drizzle (Sunday night).
Sub-VFR ceilings will likely continue through Monday and possibly
Monday night as low pressure strengthens off the coast. Snow will
remain possible through Monday night, though confidence is still low
on where the heaviest will be. Gusty northwest winds will develop
Monday and continue into Tuesday.
Sub-VFR conditions are possible on Tuesday given the potential for
with light snow lingering the first half of the day. Otherwise, VFR
conditions are likely through mid-week with brisk northwesterly
winds at times. Wind fields turn southerly on Thursday ahead of the
next trough moving through the middle of the country.

.MARINE...
SCA gusts expected to linger over the lower Chesapeake Bay and
tidal Potomac waters into this afternoon as high pressure
builds over the region and northwest breezes persist. Sub SCA
conditions expected tonight into early Sunday morning as the
high shifts offshore and winds turn light out of the southeast.
SCAs may be possible again later Sunday into Sunday night as
low pressure transfers off the coast, with winds remaining out
of the east northeast.
At a minimum, SCA will be likely in northwest winds Monday as
low pressure strengthens off the coast. Probability for gale
conditions seems to be lowering, though not completely zero.
Wintry precipitation will likely continue at times Monday before
tapering Monday night.
Pressure gradients will be rather tight in response to the area
of low pressure off the New Jersey coast. High-end small craft
conditions are likely on Tuesday with gusts likely in the 25 to
30 knot range, particularly over the Chesapeake Bay. Winds
decrease into Wednesday with marginal small craft conditions
followed by a wind shift to southerly for Thursday.
