What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Baltimore/Washington wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Oct 14, 9:04 PM EDT, 6 hours 36 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Oct 14, 9:04 PM EDT, 6 hours 36 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
904 PM EDT Thu Oct 14 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
Weak high pressure will remain in place through Friday morning
before moving offshore. A strong cold front will impact our region
Saturday. High pressure will return Sunday through at least the
middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A vast majority of the region is seeing mostly clear skies this
evening with light and variable winds. The initial high dewpoint
depressions from the warm day have decreased post-sunset.
Relative humidity levels should continue to rise toward
saturation heading into the overnight which will enhance chances
for locally dense fog. This would particularly be the case along
and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially in the lower
lying valley locales. Dense Fog Advisories may be necessary if
such a fog event emerges.

The upper ridge axis that is overhead today will start to shift
east of our region on Friday as a near neutrally oriented
trough approaches from the plains. A stronger southerly flow
will form on Friday leading to increasing warm air advection. A
more scattered cloud deck will overspread our region on Friday
leading to partly sunny skies along with afternoon temperatures
peaking in the low to mid 80s. Our region should remain mostly
dry through the majority of the day on Friday but an upper jet
starts building over the western half of our CWA late Friday and
into early Saturday morning. Shortwave energy along with
support from the upper jet may lead to a few showers or an
isolated thunderstorm impacting parts of western MD and areas
along the Allegheny front. Overnight lows will be mild in the
60s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
A strong cold front will approach from the midwest and Great Lakes
region and impact our region on Saturday. Ahead of the frontal
boundary, winds will continue to be out of south leading to
continued weak warm air advection. Shortwave energy on the east side
of a strong upper trough over the mid-West may bring some initial
showers and thunderstorms to area west of the Blue Ridge Mtns ahead
of the frontal passage. This frontal passage will be accompanied
with a strong wind field aloft of near 50 to 70 knots in the SFC to
6km layer with 40 knots at 850mb. Daytime heating ahead of the front
will likely lead to CAPE increasing into the 250 to 600 range
Saturday afternoon. A strong wind field through the layer will lead
to shear values of 40 to 50s knots as the front moves through our
region. The combination of the forcing from the frontal passage
coupled with shear around 50s and CAPE around 500 will lead to high
shear/low CAPE SVR threat for Saturday.

The main SVR threat for the frontal passage will be damaging winds
along an isolated tornado threat especially over the marine waters.
Based on current model trends, the SVR threat should be west of the
Blue Ridge during the morning and east of the Blue Ridge mainly in
the afternoon. Some models have the convective line only forming
after passing over the Blue Ridge and feeding on the increasing CAPE
ahead of the front. There remains some uncertainty on how high
available CAPE will become ahead of the line. Since we will have
favorable shear values along with strong forcing, it will only take
between 300 and 500 CAPE to initiate a line of storms and tap into
the strong winds aloft. The front should be out of our region by
midnight Sunday morning. The upper trough axis and upper jet will be
off-set from main frontal passage and may provide enough forcing for
some linger showers behind the main convective line. These showers
may be able to tap into the strong wind field aloft and product some
30 to 35 knot gusts for a period of 2 to 4 hours. The main hazards
from these gust will likely be focused over our marine waters and to
any mariners on the waters. Behind the frontal passage, strong
northwesterly winds will form which will advect in cooler and drier
air. The westerly to northwesterly flow may combine with some
forcing from the upper trough axis moving overhead to produce some
upslope showers along the Allegheny front early on Sunday morning.
Overnight lows Sat into Sunday will be much cooler in the 40s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A relatively benign and seasonable pattern is expected for much of
next week as high pressure takes control.

On Sunday, a strong cold front should be well offshore. Blustery
west to northwest flow in its wake will usher in a much cooler and
drier airmass. Scattered cumulus clouds and perhaps a sprinkle can't
be ruled out under the upper trough axis, along with perhaps a
shower or two along and west of the Allegheny Front, but it should
be dry most of the time. Winds may gust to around 30 mph for most
areas, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph possible atop the Alleghenies.

High pressure will move over the area Monday into Tuesday before
moving offshore Wednesday into Thursday. Temperatures should
gradually warm during this time as a result.

&&

.AVIATION /01Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
VFR conditions continue with winds becoming light as the
boundary layer decouples. Clear skies and light and variable
winds will lead to a threat of patchy fog at the KMRB and KCHO
terminals, with more uncertainty at the other airports. Periods
of MVFR to IFR visibilities will be possible at these terminals
late this evening and into Friday morning. VFR conditions along
with a steady southerly flow is expected on Friday. A strong
cold front will bring the threat for showers and thunderstorms
to all terminals on Saturday. The strongest storms will likely
impact our terminals along the I-95 corridor and mainly occur
Saturday afternoon. Behind the frontal passage, strong
northwesterly winds will form Saturday evening.

Gusty northwesterly winds continue into Sunday as gradients
remain tight. 20 to 25 knot gusts are possible at times in the
post-frontal air mass. Dry conditions will finish out the
weekend and continue into Monday with winds gradually decreasing
in strength.

.MARINE...
SubSCA conditions expected through Friday as high pressure remains
over our region. Model progs both in plan view and profiles in
BUFKIT suggest pressure rises behind the front Saturday afternoon
and evening will be similar across most of the marine area - about 5
mb in 3 hours. However, the low-level wind field looks to be about 4
to 8 kts stronger (with somewhat deeper and more persistent mixing)
over northern areas. For this reason, an initial Gale Watch has been
issued for the Chesapeake Bay and adjoining tributaries north of
North Beach MD as well as the upper tidal Potomac River. The watch
runs from noon to 9pm to account for uncertainties in the timing of
FROPA and associated post-frontal surge. Any showers or
thunderstorms associated with the cold front would likely enhance
this wind potential given up to 40 kt of flow a few thousand feet
above the surface and moist adiabatic temperature profiles. Of note,
the wind may shift and begin gusting rather abruptly Saturday.
Refinements to timing and placement of marine headlines are likely
in subsequent forecast updates.

Gusty NW winds of 25 to 30 kt are likely Sunday, with a few gusts to
near gale force possible during the afternoon. Gusts of 20 to 25 kt
may linger through Monday.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Anomalies should hold steady around one foot above normal through
Friday due to a generally light flow, though a bit of a
northwesterly breeze may knock water levels down a bit through
later this evening. Southerly flow is expected ahead of a
strong cold front later Friday through Saturday which should
cause a marked increase in water levels. Minor flooding is
possible as a result. Moderate flooding looks unlikely at this
time, though it can't completely be ruled out for the more
vulnerable shoreline.

&&

.CLIMATE...
Records highs will be nearby on Friday. Though these are
probably just out of reach, they are close enough to warrant
mentioning.
