.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure atop the region will slide offshore today as low
pressure tracks north of the Great Lakes. An associated warm
front will lift north of the area early Sunday as a cold front
approaches from the northwest late Sunday into early Monday. The
front will press through the area Monday as weak high pressure
returns in its wake through the middle of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Showers continued this morning along the I-95 corridor down
near Fredericksburg and along the Potomac. These showers are
starting to taper off but I can't rule out a few showers
creeping into southern Maryland over the next few hours.
.Previous Discussion
High pressure sits atop the region this
morning as a frontal boundary bisects the Southeastern U.S. and
low pressure pushes into the Upper Midwest. Locally, skies have
favored partly cloudy early this morning thanks to weak energy
aloft on the backside of a departing upper trough over the
Northeast. A few showers have sparked across central Virginia
the past several hours, delivering very little in the way of
measurable rainfall as they track off to the southeast.
Additional echoes are being observed over southwestern PA,
nearing extreme western MD the next couple of hours before
dissipating. Again, not expecting much in the way of measurable
rainfall with this activity either. Temperatures are in the 60s
for most, near 70 in the city centers, while dewpoints running
from the middle 50s to lower 60s.
The surface high will shift offshore today, allowing for
southerly breezes to emerge. We'll remain wedged between the
departing upper trough over the Northeast and the large ridge
over the central U.S. While weak ridging aloft will win out by
this afternoon, there should be enough energy and increasing
moisture at the surface to help spark a few showers and
thunderstorms along and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and
into central Virginia. Not seeing much support from model
guidance to indicate much if any of this activity makes it
eastward into the major metros, so will run with a POP free
forecast there for now. Temperatures will be a touch warmer
today thanks to the developing southerly winds, with highs in
the mid to upper 80s for most. Dewpoints will be increasing
throughout the day as well, reaching well into the 60s by days
end, bringing back that summertime humidity to the region.
Low pressure tracking north of the Great Lakes will push a warm
front toward the region tonight, keeping a light southerly
breeze going through the overnight hours. A few showers will be
possible across central Virginia and toward southern Maryland by
dawn as said warm front lifts northward. Low temperatures will
be on the mild side, middle 60s to lower 70s.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The aforementioned warm front will be to our north Sunday as a
cold front drops southeastward from the Great Lakes region.
Ahead of the approaching front, temperatures will soar well into
the low to middle 90s, with dewpoints inching further upward
into the upper 60s to low 70s. Definitely a more hot and humid
day that we are accustomed to in late July. Subtle height falls
with the approaching front combined with the increasing heat and
humidity, will allow for sufficient instability to spark
afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Modest shear
combined with the available instability will allow for some
storms to be strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts the
primary threat. At this point, areas north of I-66 serve to have
the best chance of seeing the stronger activity given the
placement of the front just north northwest of the Mason Dixon
Line by Sunday evening.
Shower and thunderstorm activity will diminish Sunday evening as
the front remains just to our north. The front will push into
our area Monday, with another round of showers and thunderstorms
focused during peak heating hours, some of which could be
strong to severe. Placement and strength of the thunderstorm
activity will be dependent on how progressive the front is. Will
advertise the higher POPs Monday afternoon and early evening
across the southern half of the CWA, with drier and cooler
conditions prevailing Monday night behind the front.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The global guidance continue to advertise an omega block setup
across the mid-latitudes throughout much of next week. A sprawling
ridge of high pressure will be a mainstay feature across the middle
of the country while gradually strengthening in time. To either side
of this blocking high, troughs are to inhabit the northeastern
Pacific and eastern North America, respectively. The latter trough
axis should play a key role in the upcoming forecast as
northwesterly flow aloft prevails over the northeastern U.S. Any
locally stronger perturbations in the flow may be an impetus to
periods of organized convection. Given the steeper lapse rates aloft
in such a regime, some threat for nocturnal thunderstorms may exist
given enough elevated instability.
During the period, an early week frontal zone is forecast to stall
toward the Carolinas. Most solutions keep this boundary intact to
the south while becoming less defined in time. Some of the northern
stream troughs which pass by to the north will draw cold fronts
toward the Mid-Atlantic. However, they should eventually wash out as
the belt of forcing lifts into higher maritime latitudes. There will
be a couple periods to watch for in terms of more pronounced
thunderstorm activity. Late Tuesday, a shortwave moves through the
Lower Great Lakes into Pennsylvania with some of the stronger wind
fields possibly grazing the region. If any elevated CAPE remains,
some residual thunderstorm chances could loom into the night. By
Thursday/Friday, a more pronounced upper trough sets up across
eastern North America. The approach of an upstream cold front will
increase the likelihood of showers/thunderstorms. On Thursday, many
deterministic solutions bring 35 to 45 knots of mid-level flow
through the Mid-Atlantic. The corresponding thermodynamic
environment is more uncertain which makes the thunderstorm threat
more conditional at this time.
Temperatures will easily warm into the low to mid 90s on Tuesday and
Wednesday. With heights lowering a bit late in the week, a few
degrees are likely to be shaved off the earlier week readings. Dew
point temperatures are not expected to be terribly high being north
of a stalled boundary, generally running in the low 60s. Relative to
late July climatology, forecast highs will sit around 4 to 7 degrees
above average before decreasing a bit late in the week.

.AVIATION /14Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure will slide offshore today allowing for southerly
winds to develop across the terminals. A few afternoon showers
and thunderstorms will be possible along and west of the Blue
Ridge Mountains, with most of the terminals likely avoiding any
such encounter. CHO will see the best chance, albeit low, of a
passing shower or storm.
A warm front will lift north of the terminals overnight and into
early Sunday morning, with a continued southerly breeze at
around 10 knots and VFR conditions persisting. A cold front
will drop southeastward from the Great Lakes late Sunday,
helping spark showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and
evening hours. A few storms could be strong to severe, with
damaging wind gusts the primary threat. Activity looks to be
focused north of I-66, bringing potential sub VFR impacts to
those terminals with any encounter. A cold front will push
across the terminals Monday, with additional chances for
afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, some of which
could once again be strong to severe. Drier conditions expected
Monday night in the wake of the front as winds turn out of the
northwest at less than 10 knots.
VFR conditions are expected for early/mid next week with
northwesterly winds dominating at times. While uncertain, some non-
zero chance for showers and thunderstorms exists late Tuesday which
would allow for some brief restrictions.

.MARINE...
High pressure over the region this morning will slide offshore
today, delivering southerly breezes across the waters. Solid SCA
conditions are expected this evening and overnight across all
our waters as a warm front lifts through the region, thus an
Advisory is in effect during this time. Southerly breezes will
persist Sunday as the warm front lifts to our north and a cold
front approaches well to our northwest by Sunday night. Showers
and thunderstorms will be possible Sunday afternoon and evening,
with gusty winds a threat across our northern waterways. SCA
gusts will linger across the Chesapeake Bay and lower tidal
Potomac waters Sunday, favoring our lower Bay waters Sunday
night.
The cold front will push southward on Monday with light
southwest to westerly breezes, and renewed shower and
thunderstorm chances Monday afternoon and early evening. Again,
gusty winds will be a threat to boaters during this time,
potentially requiring the need for Special Marine Warning's.
Light northwest winds are expected Monday night behind the front
as drier conditions return.
Wind gusts should stay below SCA criteria with northwesterly flow
prevailing much of the time on Tuesday and Wednesday. If showers and
thunderstorms were to materialize late Tuesday, Marine Weather
Statements may be required.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Southerly flow will continue through the weekend which raises tidal
anomalies across the waters. Such winds strengthen late Saturday
into Sunday morning leading to many locations nearing the Minor
Stage during high tide. Given the close proximity to the full moon,
the astronomical tides will run higher than usual. Many of the
numerical pieces of guidance depict Minor being reached early to mid
Sunday across the Chesapeake Bay tidal sites. This is also supported
by the Stevens Ensemble data where relevant.
