Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
In the wake of a cold front, high pressure will build overhead
through tonight before moving offshore on Thursday. Another
cold front will cross the area Thursday night, before high
pressure over the Midwest builds eastward through the weekend.
Low pressure may impact the area early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A cold front is slowly exiting the area this afternoon, making
its way across the Chesapeake Bay. Gusty northwest flow has
emerged in its wake, gusting 30 to 40 mph at times this
afternoon. With temperatures generally ranging from the upper
30s to middle 40s, wind chills are registering in the upper 20s
to middle 30s. Drier air behind the front is being advected into
the area thanks to said northwest breezes, which has allowed for
skies to trend mostly sunny for much of the CWA, even near the
Alleghenies as snow shower activity has dwindled. Visible
satellite imagery does highlight areas that saw training snow
squalls earlier this morning, particularly along U.S. 50 in
Mineral and Hampshire Counties in West Virginia.

Winds will slacken later this afternoon and into this evening,
holding on to a light northwest breeze through the night, under
mostly clear skies as high pressure at the surface and aloft
builds overhead. Temperatures will fall down into the 20s for a
good portion of the area, while the teens will be more common
in the mountains, especially areas with a fresh snow pack.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Weak high pressure as the surface and aloft will slide offshore
early Thursday, as low pressure north of the Great Lakes pushes
another cold front through the region. With much of the upper
level energy also residing to our north, and not much moisture
to speak of, the main fanfare will be a shift in the winds from
the southwest to more of a westerly component through Thursday
night. Winds across the ridges will be elevated in the wake of
the frontal passage, gusting upwards of 40 mph at times Thursday
afternoon/night. With those southwest winds, temperatures will
trend warmer Thursday afternoon, rising well into the 40s to
lower 50s with mostly sunny skies. Temperatures Thursday night
drop back into the middle 20s to lower 30s.

Weak cyclonic flow aloft expected on Friday as high pressure
builds into the Midwest through Friday night. This will allow
for surface winds to veer northwesterly and become gusty once
again, ushering in cooler temperatures but continued dry
conditions during this timeframe. Highs on Friday will top out
near climatological normals, in the upper 20s in the mountains,
to upper 30s and middle 40s everywhere else. Colder Friday
night with lows falling back into the teens and 20s area wide.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A reinforcing cold front will progress through the area during the
day on Saturday, as a shortwave aloft departs off to our east.
Increasing large-scale subsidence in the wake of the departing
shortwave will encourage the eastward progression of high pressure
from the Upper Midwest into the Ohio Valley, while also gradually
bringing upslope snow showers along the Allegheny Front to an end.
Skies should stay mostly sunny to the east of the Allegheny Front.
Conditions will be both cold and windy on Saturday, with highs in
the 30s and blustery northwesterly winds gusting to around 20-30
mph. As a result, wind chills will hold in the 20s for much of the
day.

High pressure will build overhead on Sunday, leading to lighter
winds and continued dry conditions. Skies will initially be mostly
sunny, but clouds may be on the increase through the afternoon.
Temperatures will run a few degrees warmer than Saturday, with highs
in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

The pattern turns more active heading into early next week, as a
cutoff upper low over the Desert Southwest/Northern Mexico is
reabsorbed into the southern stream of the westerlies and approaches
the area from the west later Sunday into Monday. As it tracks
rapidly east, it will tap into deep moisture in the Gulf and start
to draw that moisture northward toward our area. Meanwhile, another
disturbance in the northern stream will pass to our north, allowing
high pressure to build at the surface in its wake. The moisture
being drawn north by the southern system may eventually overrun cold
air in place at the surface. Just how cold that air will be, both at
the surface and aloft remains in question. Ensembles paint a wide
variety of potential solutions during the Monday through Monday
Night time period, with a cold rain, wintry mix, and snow all
possibilities. There's also a non-zero chance that the system could
completely miss us to the south. We'll continue to monitor this
system over the upcoming week, and provide updates as forecast
confidence increases.

.AVIATION /20Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
In the wake of a frontal passage earlier today, gusty northwest
winds have taken hold, gusting 30 to 35 knots at times this
afternoon. Winds will diminish late this afternoon, and remain
on the lighter side at less than 10 knots through the night. Dry
conditions and mostly clear skies expected as well, thus VFR
conditions can be expected.

Another cold front will push through the terminals the second
half of the day Thursday, with gusty southwest winds turning
westerly as the front crosses. Winds Thursday afternoon could
gust upwards of 20 knots, with continued dry conditions and VFR
through Thursday night.

Winds turn gusty out of the northwest on Friday as high pressure
builds into the Midwest, with winds gusting 20 to 25 knots at

terminals on Friday. VFR conditions will continue on Saturday,
but winds will turn much lighter as high pressure builds
overhead.

.MARINE...
Gale Warning remains in effect for all waters this afternoon as
winds continue to gust 30 to 35 knots in the wake of a frontal
passage. Winds will diminish late this afternoon and into this
evening as brief high pressure builds into the region, with SCA
gusts likely persisting through mid-evening hours. Sub SCA gusts
overnight as the high takes hold, and winds trend light and west
southwesterly.

Another cold front will bring gusty west southwest winds to the
waters on Thursday, with SCA gusts increasing in the morning and
persisting through the afternoon hours. Winds abate Thursday
evening and night, remaining out of the west. Winds increase out
of the northwest on Friday as high pressure builds into the
Midwest and the gradient tightens. Gusts will likely reach SCA
criteria for portions of the waters late Friday morning and
lingering through Friday night.

Small Craft Advisories will likely be needed on Saturday in
northwesterly flow. Winds should drop back to sub-SCA levels on
Sunday as high pressure builds overhead.
