Area forecast discussion, Jun 2, 10:09 AM EDT, 4 hours 8 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
1009 AM EDT Wed Jun 2 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain offshore through this weekend and into
early next week. An upper level trough will reside to our west
through Thursday, before progressing off to our east by later Friday
into Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

12Z IAD sounding still showed pockets of dry air centered around
700 mb and below 850 mb with an inversion around 500 mb. Some
breaks in the clouds have developed across the central
Shenandoah Valley, but overall forcing and moisture are still
lacking today, so not expecting a lot will happen today.

Things begin to change this evening as moisture surges into the
area associated with an advancing warm front. Expect convective
cvrg to increase toward sunset across the south and advance
northeast overnight.

Previous afd...

A positively tilted trough is located off to our west, with the main
trough axis still over the center of the country. Low-level
southerly flow and mid-high level southwesterly flow will reside
over the area today. A weak disturbance embedded in southwesterly
flow aloft may be enough to spark off a few showers or maybe even a
thunderstorm to the west of the Blue Ridge or across central
Virginia this afternoon. Further east, forcing for ascent will be
lacking, so any mention of precipitation today has been removed for
those areas. Highs today will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with
dewpoints holding in the upper 50s to around 60.

A push of low-level moisture advection will spread northward from
the Carolinas and southern Virginia tonight, leading to chances for
showers and potentially even a thunderstorm anywhere overnight. Low
clouds will also develop in response to the low-level moisture
advection. Lows overnight will be in the low-mid 60s as dewpoints
climb into the 60s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
We'll start out the day on Thursday with low clouds in place, but
most of the overnight showers and storms should have progressed off
to our north and east along with the leading edge of the low-level
moisture advection. Low clouds should gradually rise into a mid-
level deck over the course of the morning. As daytime heating
ensues, temperatures will reach into the upper 70s to lower 80s,
which when combined with dewpoints in the mid-upper 60s will result
in around 1000 J/kg of MLCAPE across the area by early afternoon. As
the trough slowly moves off to the east, flow aloft will be on the
increase, resulting in around 30-40 knots of 0-6 km shear over the
area. HREF members are in fairly good agreement about developing
storms near or just west of the Blue Ridge during the early
afternoon hours, and then progressing those storms off to the east
during the afternoon and evening hours. Given the parameter space in
place, well organized multicell clusters or some marginal supercell
structures may be possible as storms move through the area. Damaging
winds look to be the main hazard associated with these storms,
prompting a day 2 slight risk from SPC to the east of the Blue
Ridge. A marginal risk is in place further to the west, where
instability looks to be lesser and areal coverage of storms is
expected to be lower. Locations to the east of the Blue Ridge are
also under a marginal risk for excessive rainfall from WPC. While
storm motions should be relatively fast, precipitable water values
are anomalously high (around 1.5-1.8 inches) and unidirectional flow
through much of the column with a decent low-level jet could lead to
efficient heavy rainfall production and localized training elements.

Storms may linger in some spots into Thursday night, and a few
additional storms may be possible on Friday as the upper level
trough axis swings through. However, the threat for both severe
thunderstorms and flash flooding look much lower on Friday.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The long term period will feature a stagnating synoptic pattern with
surface high pressure off the east coast and a building mid/upper
level ridge. The greatest uncertainties revolve around how the ridge
will evolve early next week...a potential weak closed low off the
Carolina coast and any upstream shortwave troughs which could
suppress the ridge. That would mainly affect thunderstorm chances,
and perhaps a few degrees on temperatures. On the whole, however,
subsidence should limit convection, especially Saturday and Sunday.
For Monday and Tuesday, chance PoPs are focused near/west of the
Blue Ridge, since terrain circulations would be most likely to
result in a pop-up storm in an otherwise weakly-forced environment.
Temperatures will be above normal through the period, with Saturday
likely being the "coolest." NBM has trended upward as well, with
highs in the lower 90s for many locations Sunday-Tuesday.

&&

.AVIATION /14Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
VFR conditions are expected today. A stray shower can't be ruled out
at MRB or CHO late this afternoon, but chances are that they'll stay
dry. Chances for showers, and potentially even a stray thunderstorm
will move in overnight. Low clouds will be moving in as well. IFR
ceilings appear likely at most terminals later tonight, with ceilings
gradually improving to VFR again tomorrow morning. Showers and
thunderstorms are expected across the area tomorrow afternoon,
leading to gusty winds and brief drops to sub-VFR conditions. There
will be at least some chance for low clouds again Thursday night
into early Friday, but conditions should improve again by Friday
afternoon.

VFR conditions with light south winds expected Saturday and Sunday
as high pressure remains anchored offshore.

&&

.MARINE...
Winds are expected to pick up to SCA levels again later this
afternoon. SCA level winds appear likely again tomorrow in
southerly flow. SMWs will likely be needed tomorrow afternoon as
storms move over the waters. Winds should drop back to sub-SCA
levels by Friday morning.

Southerly winds will prevail through the weekend with high pressure
positioned offshore. Other than a low chance of enhanced channeled
flow on the Chesapeake Bay after sunset each day, winds should
largely remain below advisory criteria.
