.SYNOPSIS...
An upper-level disturbance will pass over the region tonight
into Wednesday morning. A strong cold front will then pass
through later Wednesday into Thursday. Canadian high pressure
will then build overhead late this week into the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Showers are expected to increase in coverage this afternoon
across the central Shenandoah Valley as an upper level
disturbance over the southern Appalachians tracks NNE. Could see
1 to 4 inches of rain with this disturbance through 12Z Wed.
Flash Flood Watch was expanded in coverage and timing to include
entire two events. A River Flood Watch was also issued for the
Potomac River at Franklin WV (Pendleton County).

Previous afd...

For our area, there are two main features at play that will
drive our weather over the next couple of days. First and
foremost, there is a deepening upper level trough over the
northern/central Plains, with a strengthening surface low over
Lake Superior. The cold front attached to this low extends south
from there through the midwest and down into Oklahoma. This
will be the big weather feature Wednesday night into Thursday
(more on that below).

Ahead of this system though is a weaker disturbance, currently
located over the southeast and gradually pushing towards the
northeast. This feature is more of an upper level feature with a
relatively weak surface inflection. This is actually the
remnants of what was once Hurricane Nicholas finally trying to
depart. As southerly flow increases ahead of the approaching
cold front, and this system is dragged northward over our area
late tonight into Wednesday morning, showers and a few thunderstorms
are expected to develop along/west of the Blue Ridge to the
Allegheny Front. Given the moist air mass and local enhancement
due to orographic lift, could see some locally heavy rainfall
amounts of up to 3 inches, particularly along the ridges. Have
hoisted a Flash Flood Watch for this region as a result late
tonight into Wednesday morning. This event is entirely separate
from the event coming Wednesday night. No severe threat
anticipated with this system. This initial threat should come to
end by around mid-morning or so at the very latest.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Not expecting much of a lull following the initial round of
heavy rainfall, as the aforementioned cold front pushes ever
closer Wednesday morning. A more substantial flood threat may
exist with this second round, especially if the initial round
pans out as the recent hi-res guidance has depicted. By
Wednesday night, instability increases with precip becoming
more convective in nature. A heavy frontal rain band is likely
Wed night and Thursday with risk of some severe weather and
flooding. Considerable uncertainty still remains with respect
to timing of frontal passage. Much of the guidance still wants
to clear this front of our area by Thursday morning, while the
latest ECMWF continues to lag behind by about 12 hours, keeping
precipitation through late Thursday. Tried to lean more towards
the consensus, while not completely ruling out the ECMWF
solution. Should the front pass through during the day on
Thursday, the severe risk would be higher as there would be more
instability available. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has
introduced the region into a marginal risk for severe weather on
day 3 (Thursday) for the eastern half of our region. Will have
to see how quickly the front progresses and see which guidance
is handling that best.

All in all, combining the 2 rainfall events, several inches of
rain are expected across the region, especially west of the Blue
Ridge. A swath of 1-3 inches of rain is likely west of the Blue
Ridge Mountains Wednesday into Thursday with a considerable
risk of small stream flooding. Isolated rainfall amounts in
excess of 4 inches along the ridges are possible for the storm
total. Big thing will be how much enhancement will we actually
see along the ridges.

A bit of uncertainty for Thursday night though. If the front is
clear, should be dry and cool. For much of the area that should
be the case. Could see the front being hung up along the
Chesapeake Bay, keeping rain chances through the night. That is
reflected in the low temp forecast at this time. Areas
along/east of I-95 will see temps in the mid to upper 50s (low
60s along the Bay). Areas west of these will see temps into the
mid 40s to mid 50s form west to east. Some of the high valleys
out west may even dip into the upper 30s, so may have to watch
for some frost out that way. Far to uncertain on that threat at
this time though.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A highly amplified upper level flow pattern will be in place through
much of the extended forecast period. Generally speaking, ridging
will be in place across the Pacific coast or Rockies, with troughing
averaged over eastern North America. Thus, model spread continues to
exist through this period, though with less overall impacts to
sensible weather.

There is still some chance the cold front from Wednesday/Thursday
will not completely clear the area by Friday, but consensus places
it far enough east to taper PoPs. High pressure will build in from
the west/southwest behind this feature, although another trough axis
and surface boundary may cross the area over the weekend. Moisture
should be limited with this boundary. There's some agreement a large
area of high pressure will build over much of the Mid
Atlantic/Southeast by Monday with continued northwest flow aloft.

In sum, the forecast will look fairly similar each day, with near to
below normal temperatures (much cooler than recent days), and
precipitation chances low enough to be omitted from the text
forecast. Frost isn't totally out of the question in higher
elevation valleys if clear skies, light winds, and low dew points
sufficiently overlap (which remains uncertain at this time).

.AVIATION /15Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Ceilings should improve to VFR by this afternoon but MVFR to
IFR restrictions will likely return Tuesday evening.

For Tuesday night into Wednesday, an upper level disturbance
will bring some showers and a few storms west of the Blue Ridge
with locally heavy rainfall possible at times. This will
primarily affect CHO and perhaps even MRB towards the end of
the TAF period. Elsewhere, can't rule out some showers as well,
but the bulk should stay west.

Showers and thunderstorms may overspread terminals west of the
I-95 corridor on Wednesday afternoon/evening through Thursday as
a strong cold front traverses the region. Still a lot of
uncertainty at this time on the exact timing of the approaching
front. VSBY and CIG restrictions would be likely during this
time.

Thinking the front should be through most terminals by Thursday
afternoon, but could be a bit slow to exit MTN/BWI Thursday
evening. Still some uncertainty there as well. VFR conditions
should return though for the rest of the area by Thursday
afternoon/evening.

There's increasing confidence the front/low pressure system will be
east of the area by Friday, allowing VFR conditions/dry weather to
return.

.MARINE...
Strengthening flow this afternoon through Thursday will create
SCA conditions across all waters. Have started an SCA for all
waters starting Wednesday morning. That will likely get extended
into Thursday. Gale conditions will also be possible Wed night
into Thursday in gusty showers and along and behind frontal
passage Thursday.

Northwesterly winds behind a cold front will continue into Friday.
SCA conditions may continue for a time, but overall winds should be
lessening for Friday into Saturday as high pressure builds closer to
the area.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Anomalies are holding fairly steady early this morning, which is
precluding flooding in most locations. One exception is DC Southwest
Waterfront, where anomalies should remain sufficient (with easterly
winds keeping excess water from exiting the Potomac) for continued
minor flooding each cycle. Have thus issued an advisory through this
evening.

Onshore flow will continue tonight, followed by strong southerly
flow Wednesday ahead of a cold front. Anomalies will continue to
rise, with the largest surge expected ahead of the front. Chances
for flooding will increase first at sensitive locations, but more
widespread minor coastal flooding is possible Wednesday into early
Thursday. Moderate flooding is possible, mainly at Annapolis.
