Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 951 AM EDT Wed Mar 17 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Weak low pressure will head east off the coast today. A stronger low pressure in the southern Plains will cross just south of the region Thursday into Friday. High pressure from the Great Lakes will then build across the region over the weekend and linger through early next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Latest analysis depicts weak low pressure offshore of Cape Hatteras, with a weak high pressure ridge over West Virginia. A stronger low pressure is over Arkansas. A solid low overcast is being observed this morning across most of the Middle Atlantic. Undercast is clearly visible on visible satellite this morning, with clear spots over the ridges above 1500 feet or so (and clouds in lower elevations around them). Clouds may break apart somewhat this afternoon. However, just as the low clouds break, high clouds from the system over the southern Plains will start moving in, so at best, this afternoon may turn out partly sunny for most of the region. Highs likely reach the 50s in most of the area, with some 60s expected well south and west of the metro across the lower Shenandoah Valley and possibly Charlottesville area, where low clouds may break early enough to allow some stronger and longer filtered sunshine. Where clouds are expected to linger longest over NoVA/N MD and the DC/Baltimore metros, shaved a couple degrees off today's high temperature forecast with the morning update. A warm front associated with the approaching system in the southern Plains will approach later tonight, with increasing clouds. Expect rain to rapidly overspread the region late tonight, with rain falling across the entire area by sunrise Thursday. Temperatures will drop into the 40s overnight. && .SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... Low pressure will be over the Mid Mississippi Valley early Thursday and will travel almost due east through Friday morning, ending up just east of Ocean City by dawn Friday. There will be a bit of an energy transfer once the low reaches West Virginia to new low pressure developing closer to Virginia Beach, but it won't be particularly noticeable. The main effect of this transfer will be to help keep the warm front associated with this system south of our region for the most part, though it may infringe on the lower Shenandoah Valley and far southern Maryland. This means we will stay in the stable cooler air mass Thursday and Thursday night, helping to keep the severe thunderstorm risk confined mostly south of the area, but also enhancing mid-level frontogenesis to promote heavier rainfall. We now have a widespread marginal risk of excessive rain, with the marginal severe thunderstorm risk mostly south and west of the metro. For most of the region, this will be a significant rainfall, with 1-1.5 inches likely, possibly reaching 2 inches in favored spots. The back side is a bit problematic as the low heads east off the coast, as enough cold air could wrap southward briefly to change rain to snow right before ending. At this time, think the precip is more likely to outrun the cold air in the I-95 corridor, but the cold air could catch the precip in the I-81/I-70 corridors, so have some chance of snow Friday morning in these areas. However, best chance of accumulation is over the higher terrain of the Allegheny Front, where we have up to an inch or so of snowfall in the forecast. Will have to watch model trends, however, in case precip looks more likely to linger and cold air moves in faster than currently expected. Temperatures Friday will be in the 40s with a gusty northwest wind developing, and this will continue after precip ends and temps cool down towards freezing Friday night. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... High pressure will gain control of the region Saturday through Tuesday. Temperatures will be near average Saturday, then rise a couple more degrees to a mild afternoon Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. && .AVIATION /14Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... IFR (LIFR near KMRB) lifting to MVFR gradually thru 18z. Light NE flow this morning becomes SE this afternoon. Tonight, widespread rain moves in and lingers into Friday morning, with intervals of IFR and MVFR cigs/vsby. Improvement to VFR expected by late Friday afternoon as the system moves out. VFR conditions Saturday through Sunday night. Winds north 10 knots Saturday, then variable 5 to 10 knots Saturday night. Winds northeast 5 to 10 knots Sunday, then light and variable Sunday night. && .MARINE... Light winds should prevail through tonight as one weak low pressure moves away from the region. Stronger southeasterly winds look likely to overspread the middle bay as a storm system approaches from the west on Thursday. However, the strongest winds likely occur Friday as the system pulls east off the coast and strengthens. Small Craft Advisory winds are a lock, and gales are possible. No marine hazards Saturday through Sunday night. Winds north 10 to 15 knots Saturday, then variable 5 to 10 knots Saturday night. Winds northeast 5 to 10 knots Sunday, then light and variable Sunday night. && .TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... Easterly flow has resulted in slightly elevated water levels. These should maintain through the next few cycles. However, by late Thursday into Friday, stronger easterly flow will likely further increase anomalies, resulting in a risk of minor flooding. This risk may continue even on Friday after winds turn more northerly, as anomalies may have increased significantly at the mouth of the bay by this point.
