.SYNOPSIS...
A secondary cold front will move through today. High pressure
will build in from the Great Lakes over the weekend, then shift
offshore next week as another frontal system approaches from the
west.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
11:00AM Update: Have upgraded areas in the lee of the Allegheny
Front to a High Wind Warning with the expectation of slightly
higher winds due to acceleration from downsloping effects.

10:00AM Update: Have added most of the DC metro and the Blue
Ridge to the High Wind Warning and make a slide expansion to the
Wind Advisory in central Virginia based on the long duration of
the wind and higher confidence in a slightly strong wind field.

Note that the extended duration of strong winds will likely
result in widespread tree damage and power outages.

Previous discussion...
Persistent cold advection behind the cold front will keep
temperatures close to where they currently are. In spite of mid-
Spring solar insolation, this should easily be countered by the
arrival of cooler air from the northwest. There are a pair of
surges of wind expected in this pattern. This second round of
high wind arrives as a powerful upper trough slides
southeastward through the region during the early evening.
Models show 500-mb winds around 100 knots with 850-mb flow
maximizing in the 50 to 60 knot range. A series of model
soundings show a deeply mixed boundary layer in this gusty post-
frontal air mass. Much of this higher momentum air should easily
mix to the surface leading to gusts around that 50 to 60 knot
threshold. Consequently, the area has been blanketed with High
Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories which run into the overnight
hours. Downed trees, hazardous travel, and power outages are all
possible with such wind fields.

While much of the region remains dry, some shower activity is
anticipated west of I-95 given the pockets of instability aloft.
The convective showers should stay more locked to areas of
terrain with areas downstream in the lee being more compromised
by downsloping flow. However, cannot rule out some of these
afternoon showers making it as far east as the DC metro area.

After multiple days of mild weather this week, a much cooler air
mass arrives in earnest. This will be even more noticeable
across higher elevations of the Allegheny Front. Some spots may
reach the freezing mark tonight which could affect sensitive
vegetation or impact unprotected outdoor plumbing. While lows
are forecast to sit around the freezing mark in these locations,
low to mid 40s will be commonplace elsewhere.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
The combination of cool overnight temperatures and residual
breezy winds should make for a chilly start to the month of May.
Forecast wind chills are in the 30s in all locations with teens
and 20s in the higher terrain. Record low temperatures at the
area climate sites are in the low/mid 30s which should remain
safe from being broken. Persistent west-northwesterly winds
will continue to usher in cooler air from central Canada.
Slightly below average temperatures are to be widespread on
Saturday with highs topping out in the mid/upper 60s, locally
cooler in the mountains. However, this will come with abundant
sunshine through the day.

By Saturday evening and into Sunday, winds turn more
southwesterly with the surface anticyclone parked off the
southeastern U.S. coast. Increasing moisture content with the
warm advection will allow for milder overnight conditions along
with a much warmer Sunday. With 850-mb temperatures rising into
the low teens, a well mixed boundary layer would support mid
80s. This seems plausible based on model soundings. Dry
conditions prevail to finish out the weekend with persistent
southwesterly flow bringing Sunday night lows back into the
upper 50s to low 60s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
H5 ridging over the western Atlantic will slowly continue to shift
further eastward through the middle of next week as troughing
continues over the western portions of the CONUS. As a result, high
pressure over Bermuda will continue a southerly flow; allowing for
the continuation of warmer and more humid conditions. Given the
synoptic set-up, waves of low pressure will be ejected eastward
towards the Mid-Atlantic region. This will result in continued
chances for more unsettled weather.

While the first half of Monday looks to remain mostly dry at this
time, a warm front will push northward late Monday into Tuesday as a
wave of low pressure tracks northeastward along the Appalachians.
This will cause the chances for showers to increase Monday afternoon
into Tuesday. As the parent low continues to track further into
northern New England, the associated cold front appears to stall
over West Virginia, allowing a second wave of low pressure to
traverse along it on Wednesday. This second wave appears strong
enough to drag the stalled boundary across the region Wednesday
afternoon/evening, before fully exiting the region by Thursday
morning.

Overall, guidance is in good agreement on the progression of the
synoptic pattern and the timing of the FROPA. Chances for showers
and thunderstorms look more promising on Tuesday and Wednesday
with elevated CAPE and PWAT values. With that being said flooding
threats also cannot be ruled out.

Weak high pressure looks to return briefly for Thursday. However
another low pressure system may impact the region on Friday.
Temperatures cool down to more seasonable levels by late next
week.

.AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
VFR conditions expected to persist through the weekend. Strong WNW
winds continue through Friday night where gusts are expected to
range between 25-35 kts during this time. The strongest gusts of
40-50kts are expected between 20Z and 03Z. A few showers or even
a thunderstorm are possible late this afternoon, as well. Gusts
subside by Sat AM but will still remain somewhat gusty, up to
20 kts during Sat afternoon.

VFR conditions expected on Monday. However periods of sub-VFR
conditions may ensue late Monday night through Wednesday as multiple
waves of low pressure pass through the region; resulting in periods
of showers and potential thunderstorms. Winds will remain southerly
during this time.

.MARINE...
A mixture of marine weather headlines are in effect as very
gusty winds arrive with the pressure surge. Gale and Storm
Warnings remain in place into early Saturday morning as a
couple of windy periods affect the area waterways. Being out on
the water will be quite dangerous while these headlines are out.
Residual breezy conditions on Saturday should lead to small
craft conditions for portions of the day as well.

SCA conditions are possible Monday and Tuesday as multiple waves of
low pressure pass through the waters.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Strong NW/offshore flow will cause water levels to decline through
tonight, and will likely result in near blow out tides.

The record warm low temperature for April 29th (Thursday) at
Washington Dulles was tied with a low of 65 degrees. The
previous record of 65 degrees was set in 2017.

...Enhanced Threat for Fire Spread through early this evening...

Dry fuels, low relative humidity, and strong northwesterly wind
gusts will produce favorable conditions for wildfire spread from
early this afternoon into the early evening. This is mainly for
areas east of the Blue Ridge in central and northern Virginia.
Wind gusts up to 50 mph are expected today, while slightly
decreasing into the night. Moderate recoveries are likely tonight
with humidity values staying in the 40 to 50 percent range.

Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential
ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be
sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses
and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread
quickly.
