What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Los Angeles, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Jun 30, 11:44 PM PDT, 2 hours 24 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 30, 11:44 PM PDT, 2 hours 24 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1144 PM PDT Wed Jun 30 2021

.SYNOPSIS...30/825 PM.

Night through morning low clouds and fog will return to the coast
and and coastal valleys, otherwise mostly clear skies can be
expected into early next week. A gradual cooling trend is
expected into the weekend but added moisture will make it feel
more humid through the middle of next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (WED-SAT)...30/823 PM.

***UPDATE***

The marine inversion early this evening was around 1400 ft deep at
VBG and around 1200 ft deep at LAX. There were good onshore
gradients to the N and E this evening (At 03Z...+5.7 mb LAX-DAG
and +5.4 mb LAX-BFL) which was helping to spread low clouds over
the coastal waters into the Central Coast and portions of the
coast S of Point Conception. Low clouds and fog will expand along
the coast and spread into the adjacent vlys overnight. Low clouds
and fog will also develop over the Salinas River Valley later
tonight. Elsewhere, mostly clear skies will prevail thru the
night. Breezy to gusty S-W winds early this evening over much of
the foothills and mtns of VTU/L.A. Counties as well as the
Antelope Vly will diminish overnight.

***From Previous Discussion***

Overall, 12Z models in good synoptic agreement through the short
term period. Main synoptic feature of note will be an upper level
high which will gradual strengthen over western Arizona. With this
pattern, will anticipate rather typical early July weather.

For tonight, expect the marine inversion to hover around 2000
feet in depth. So with continued onshore gradients, stratus/fog
should push into the coastal valleys tonight as well as the
Salinas River Valley. For the rest of the short term period, with
gradual increase in H5 heights, the inversion should shrink in
depth, resulting in less inland extent of stratus/fog each night.
Other than the stratus issues, do not anticipate any significant
cloud or moisture issues. Given the location of the upper level
high, out area will be under a south to southwest flow which
should keep any mid/high level moisture east of the area. So, will
continue with idea of mostly clear skies (outside of any night
and morning stratus).

As for temperatures, the combination of rising thicknesses and H5
heights and less onshore flow/marine influence will allow for a
gradual warming trend for most areas through Saturday. By Saturday,
areas away from the coast will generally be 3-6 degrees above
seasonal normals with coastal areas hovering around normal.

As for winds, models indicate some increase in northerly gradients
each night. So, some locally gusty northerly winds can be expected
across southern Santa Barbara county and the I-5 Corridor each
night, but speeds will remain below advisory levels. Otherwise,
will just anticipate the typical gusty southwesterly winds each
afternoon and evening across interior sections.

.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...30/202 PM.

For the extended, models remain on the same synoptic page. Main
feature through the period will be an upper level high that builds
over the desert Southwest into early next week. With this
pattern, H5 heights will remain rather high which should limit the
depth of the marine inversion and the inland extent of stratus and
fog. Other than any stratus, skies should remain mostly clear
through the period as the upper level flow remain south to
southwest. As for temperatures, expect minor day-to-day changes,
but most areas should remain about 3-8 degrees above seasonal
normals. With respect to winds, there will continue to be moderate
to strong onshore gradients each day, resulting in gusty
southwesterly winds each afternoon and evening.

&&

.AVIATION...01/0643Z.

At 0505 at KLAX, the marine layer was 1100 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was near 4200 feet with a temperature of 27 C.

Good confidence in inland TAFs and moderate confidence in cst/vly
TAFs.

Cig hgts may be off by +/- 300 ft and VFR transition may be off by
+/- 90 minutes.

KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF. There is a 20 percent chc that
Cigs will remain AOA 010. SCT conds could arrive as early as 19Z
or as late as 21Z. Good confidence that low clouds will return
between 02Z and 05Z. Good confidence that any east wind component
will not exceed 5 kt.

KBUR...Moderate confidence in TAF. Low clouds could arrive as
early as 07Z. There is a 20 percent chc that Cigs will remain AOA
010. VFR transition could be as late as 17Z.

&&

.MARINE...30/934 PM.

Across the outer waters...Winds are expected to remain below Small
Craft Advisory (SCA) levels through Friday morning. There is a
30-40 percent chance of SCA level gusts through Sat. There is a
50% that SCA winds will become more widespread across the entire
outer waters by Sunday afternoon into early next week.

Across the nearshore waters of the Central Coast... Winds should
remain below SCA levels through Saturday night. There is a 30%
chance for SCA level wind gusts Sunday afternoon and evening.
There is a higher chance for SCA wind gusts Monday afternoon and
evening.

Across the inner waters south of Point Conception... There is good
confidence that conditions will remain below SCA level through at
least Friday night. There is a 30% chance for SCA level gusts
across the western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel each
afternoon and evening Sat through Tue. Otherwise, no SCA
thresholds expected.
