.SYNOPSIS...05/804 PM.
Increasing onshore flow will bring a cooling trend to inland areas
through early next week and will keep persistent low clouds and
fog in place with much cooler temperatures along the coast.
Afternoon temperatures will begin to warm again beginning mid
week.

.SHORT TERM (SAT-TUE)...05/810 PM.
Upper level ridge of high pressure that had dominated our weather
pattern the past few days began to weaken over our area today. A
weak upper level trough of low pressure will move across northern
California overnight into Sunday. Meanwhile, surface pressure
gradients strengthened today as expected, and is expected to be
slightly stronger on Sunday. LAX-Daggett gradient peaked at +9.7
mb late this afternoon, and is expected to exceed +10 mb on Sunday
afternoon. The LAX-Bakersfield gradient peaked at +6.7 mb, and
could reach +7 mb on Sunday afternoon. The expected LAX- Daggett
and LAX-Bakersfield gradients are expected to exceed the 97th
percentile for early June, indicating the rarity of this strong
onshore flow pattern.
This strong onshore flow pattern already bringing increased
onshore winds across the interior today, strongest in the Antelope
Valley where gusts as high as 53 mph have been observed this
evening in the foothills at Lake Palmdale. With further
strengthening of the onshore flow, some deepening of the marine
layer, and slightly better upper level wind support, expecting
another uptick in winds across the Antelope Valley on Sunday,
likely reaching advisory levels by afternoon and evening. As a
result, will go ahead and issue a wind advisory for the Antelope
Valley with evening update, valid for Sunday afternoon/evening,
with expected wind gusts up to 45 mph on the desert floor, and up
to 55 mph in the adjacent foothills. The strengthening onshore
winds combined with relatively low humidities will continue to
bring elevated fire weather conditions to interior areas on Sunday
afternoon/early evening, especially across the Highwy 14 corridor
from Soledad Canyon into the Antelope Valley and adjacent foothills.
Current satellite imagery showing low clouds beginning to fill
in across portions of the coast this evening. The strong onshore
pressure gradients combined with a broad eddy circulation is
expected to deepen the marine layer overnight, likely reaching
2500 feet by Sunday morning across the LA Basin. As a result,
expecting low clouds to surge rapidly inland tonight, reaching the
Santa Clarita Valley by morning. In the evening update, have also
added some patchy drizzle for Sunday morning for areas south of
Point Conception, with the greatest threat for foothill areas.
Looking for classic June Gloom pattern tomorrow, with low clouds
likely lingering into the afternoon hours across some of the
immediate coastal areas. The deepening marine layer and lowering
heights will bring a continued cooling trend for the region on
Sunday.

An upper low that has been spinning harmlessly a few hundred miles
to the west will finally march onshore Monday causing the marine
layer to jump up to around 4000' and possibly even cause some
drizzle to develop in and near the foothills. Clearing will be
much slower, especially south of Pt Conception and even some
valley areas may struggle to clear. Temps will likely be the
coolest in this 7 day stretch with coastal highs in the 60s and
coastal valleys in the low 70s at best.
Heights do start to rise Tuesday as the upper low shifts east
however not soon enough to have any significant impact on the
marine layer so expect another morning at least of low clouds well
into the valleys. There should be much better clearing Tuesday
which will help boost temps a few degrees, but still still a few
degrees below normal in most areas.
.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...05/202 PM.
Heights continue to rise Tue/Wed despite a full latitude trough
developing along the West Coast. A building ridge of high pressure
across the desert southwest keeps the trough just far enough to
the west to allow for some height rises across southern
California through mid week. At the same time onshore flow weakens
considerably, helping to reduce the push of cool air inland from
the ocean and bring temps back up to near normal to slightly above
normal Wed. Will likely see some increasing northerly winds across
southern Santa Barbara County Tue/Wed that likely will continue
the rest of the week.
Still not entirely confident in the models warming trend for
later in the week as that trough moves through. The GFS remain
deeper with the trough and cooler than the ECMWF. But a majority
of the ensembles seem to be favoring the warmer scenario with less
troughing and weaker onshore flow. So the forecast continues to
indicate a warming trend through the end of the week with warmer
valley temps getting back close to 90. Coastal areas though still
on the cool side with plenty of low clouds to deal with.

At 0505z at KLAX... The marine layer was around 1400 feet deep.
The top of the inversion was around 3200 feet with a temperature
of about 21 degrees Celsius.
Moderate confidence in the 00z coastal/valley TAFs. There is a 30
percent chc that the VFR transition could be up to 2 hours later
than fcst. Sites with IFR cigs fcst have a 30 percent chc of
having only MVFR cigs.
Moderate confidence in TAF for KPRB with a 30 percent chc of no
low clouds.
High confidence in the desert TAFs with a 30 percent chc of 4SM
BLDU at KPMD 21Z-01Z.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF. There is a 30 percent chc of
OVC022 conds by 12Z. There is a 20 percent chc of no afternoon
clearing. Any east wind component will be under 6 kt with the best
chc for easterly winds 11Z-16Z.
KBUR...Moderate confidence in TAF. VFR transition could be as late
as 19Z.

.MARINE...05/709 PM.
Across the outer waters... SCA advisory through Sunday night for
zones 670 and 673 and through tonight for zone 676. There will
likely be widespread SCA level winds across all of the outer
waters Monday through Wednesday.
Across the inner waters north of Point Sal...winds will likely
increase to SCA level Monday through Wednesday during the
afternoon and evening hours. Otherwise, conditions will remain
below SCA levels.
Across the inner waters south of Point Conception...
there is a 30 percent chance of SCA level winds for the Santa
Barbara channel by Monday afternoon, increasing to 70 percent
chance by Tuesday afternoon. The winds will likely be SCA level
across all of the inner waters on Wednesday. Otherwise, conditions
will be below SCA levels.
