the Antelope Valley Sunday afternoon and evening. Temperatures
will be near normal on Sunday. A warming trend will begin on
Monday.

.SHORT TERM (SAT-TUE)...01/859 PM.

Upper level trough of low pressure diving into the Great Basin
through Sunday, with increasing northwest flow aloft across
Southwest California. In addition, strong west-east onshore
gradients in place this evening (LAX-DAG gradient at +9.1 mb),
along with tightening northwest pressure gradient across southern
Santa Barbara county (Santa Barbara-Santa Maria gradient at -4.9
mb). Main short term weather concern will be strong west to north
winds across many portions of the forecast area through Sunday
night.

For southern Santa Barbara county, the focus of the strongest
sundowner winds tonight and again Sunday afternoon/night will be
western portions of coastal/foothill areas from Gaviota to San
Marcos Pass where wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph can be expected, with
some breezy conditions also expected for the eastern foothills.
The most wind favored areas such as the hills above Gaviota and
Refugio could see isolated wind gusts up to 60 mph tonight. In
evening update have extended wind advisory through Sunday night
for southern Santa Barbara county. In addition to the tight
northwest pressure gradients at the surface, there will be
increasing upper level wind support (with 850 mb winds of 25-40
knots and 700 mb winds of 35-50 knots) later tonight into Sunday
for southern Santa Barbara county, which will lead to a fairly
widespread wind event. Wind advisories also in effect for the
Antelope Valley through Sunday evening, with the focus of
strongest winds (with gusts up to 50 mph) and potential blowing
dust on Sunday afternoon when the best upper level support
focuses across that region. In evening update, have also expanded
wind advisory areas to include the LA/Ventura mountains (for I-5
corridor region) as well as the Central Coast and Santa Clarita
Valley for Sunday, where wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph can be
expected.

The above mentioned upper level trough moving into the Great
Basin combined with strong northwest flow near the surface around
Point Conception will lead to ideal conditions for a well
developed Catalina Eddy Circulation to develop tonight into
Sunday. Current satellite imagery showing low clouds surging
northward from Orange County and southerly surface winds at Long
Beach this evening are two key indicators of an eddy circulation
becoming well developed. As a result of the eddy circulation,
expect marine layer depth to increase rapidly overnight, with low
clouds to quickly expand into LA/Ventura county coastal/valley
areas. The increased marine layer influence and lowering heights
will lead to a cooling trend for all areas on Sunday.

*** From previous discussion ***

A ridge will begin to move in to the area from the west on
Monday as the trough exits to our east. Monday morning stratus
will be less widespread and should be gone by mid morning. Monday
should be a sunny day. There will offshore flow from the north.
Some onshore flow to the east will continue although it will be
weaker than on Sunday. The rising heights and weaker seabreeze
will bring 4 to 6 degrees of warming to the area.

The ridge will build to about 580 Dm on Tuesday and downtown LA
should break 80 degrees. The skies should be mostly clear again on
Tuesday aside from some early stratus. As of now it still looks
like there will be enough onshore flow to keep the coastal
locations fairly cool but the LA County valley locations should
make it into the upper 80s. Paso Robles may break 90 degrees.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...01/206 PM.

The ridging will peak on Wednesday with another couple of degrees
of warming under mostly clear skies. The higher heights will
likely compress the marine layer low enough to prevent valley
penetration. The seabreeze may be strong enough along the central
coast to offset the height rise and even bring a few degrees of
cooling.

A very deep (540 Dm) upper level trough is forecast to form in
the Pacific Northwest and drop down into California beginning on
Thursday, moving in as the ridge heads east. Locally, heights
could drop to about 575 Dm on Friday and Saturday with
some accompanying clouds and offshore flow from the north. The
morning low clouds and fog will increase in depth and coverage
with the arrival of the trough. Afternoon high temperatures will
drop 2 to 4 degrees on Thursday, another 3 to 6 on Friday and hold
fairly steady on Saturday. No precipitation is in the forecast.
If you missed it, LOX issued a drought information statement
yesterday.

.AVIATION...02/0049Z.

At 2355Z, the marine inversion at KLAX was based near 1000 feet.
The top of the inversion was 4400 feet with a temperature of 20
degrees Celsius.

Overall, moderate confidence in 00Z TAF package. For tonight and
Sunday morning, high confidence in return of MVFR CIGS for KLAX,
KSMO, KLGB, KOXR, KCMA, KBUR, and KVNY with timing +/- 2 hours
from current TAF timing. For KSMX and KSBP, will likely see
IFR/LIFR cigs.

For KWJF AND KPMD, gusty westerly winds will continue through the
period. There is a chance of patchy MVFR VSBYs in blowing dust and
sand, especially Sunday afternoon. Also, there may be some
LLWS/turbulence across the desert foothills.

KLAX...Moderate confidence in 00Z TAF. For tonight/Sunday
morning, high confidence in return of MVFR CIG/VSBY restrictions,
but only moderate confidence in timing (+/- 2 hours of current 05Z
forecast). Southeast wind component expected later tonight into
Sunday morning with eddy circulation, but wind speeds expected to
remain less than 8 knots.

KBUR...Moderate confidence in 00Z TAF. High confidence in VFR
conditions through this evening. For overnight/Sunday morning,
high confidence in return of MVFR CIG/VSBY restrictions, but only
moderate confidence in timing (+/- 2 hours of current 08Z
forecast).

.MARINE...01/834 PM.

For the Outer Waters, moderate to high confidence in current
forecast. High confidence in Gale force winds with gusts up to 40
knots through Sunday night and GALE WARNING will remain in
effect. For Monday and Tuesday, high confidence in winds (and
possibly seas) remaining at Small Craft Advisory (SCA) levels. On
Wednesday and Thursday, there is a 40-50% chance of SCA level
winds continuing.

For the Inner Water north of Point Sal, moderate to high
confidence in current forceast. High confidence in SCA level
winds returning Sunday afternoon/evening with a 40% chance of Gale
Warnings needed during that time. For Monday, there is a 50%
chance of SCA level winds during the afternoon and evening hours.
For Tuesday and Wednesday, high confidence in winds and seas
remaining below SCA levels. For Thursday, there is a 50% chance of
SCA level winds in the afternoon and evening hours.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate to high
confidence in current forecast. For the western half of the Santa
Barbara Channel, have upgraded to a Gale Warning where gusts of 35
to 40 knots will now be likely this evening and again Sunday
afternoon/evening. Elsewhere, there is a 40% chance of SCA level
winds across the western half of PZZ655 Sunday afternoon and
evening. Otherwise, winds and seas are expected to remain below
SCA levels through mid-week.
