Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
325 AM PDT Wed Apr 28 2021
.SYNOPSIS...27/914 PM.
A significant warming trend will develop through Friday as ridging
aloft builds in from the west over the region. Summerlike
temperatures will be prevalent across the most areas away from the
coast Thursday and Friday. Broad weak troughing aloft will bring
cooler conditions over the weekend and into early next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-FRI)...28/316 AM.
A ridge will move into the state today...peak in strength
Thursday and weaken very slightly on Friday. Hgts over SoCal will
rise to 582 dam today...further increase to 591 dam Thursday and
lower to 590 dam Friday. Sfc high pressure will build into NV
today and there will be 1 to 2 MB of offshore flow from the east
int the morning with a weak diurnal return to onshore flow in the
afternoons (esp Friday). there will be a persistent 2 to 3 MB of
offshore flow from the north through the period.
The offshore flow will keep the skies clear through the short
term.
There will be 8 to 12 degrees of warming across SLO/SBA/VTA
counties today with 10 to 15 degrees of warming on tap for LA
county. Most areas will see 4 to 8 degrees of additional warming
on Thursday and this will be the warmest day across the Central
Coast and the SBA south coast where there will be highs in the
mid 70s to mid 80s which is about 10 degrees above normal. Friday
will be the warmest day across LA and VTA counties with another 2
to 3 degrees of warming on tap. For LA and VTA counties only the
beach areas will see max temps in the 70s the rest of the area
will sizzle with highs in the 80s across the rest of the coasts
and lower to mid 90s for the vly areas. A few records might fall
under these max temps which will be 10 to 15 above normal. A
switch to onshore flow early in the afternoon will bring about 5
degrees of cooling to the Central Coast.
With the exception of possible advisory gusts in the Gaviota area
this evening the gradients should only be strong enough to bring
sub advisory level offshore wind gusts to the area each morning.
.LONG TERM (SAT-TUE)...28/324 AM.
The ridge will be pushed to the south on Saturday and broad
cyclonic NW flow will move over the area. More importantly the
offshore flow will switch around to onshore. The lowering hgts,
weak cyclonic flow and onshore flow should all gang up and bring
back the night through morning low cloud pattern. It looks like
there will be some mid and high level clouds embedded in the NW
flow and skies will turn partly cloudy and maybe even mostly
cloudy at times. Max temps will fall 4 to 8 degrees each day (a
little less over the Central Coast which started cooling down a
day earlier. Sunday will likely be the coolest day with many
areas in the mid 60s to upper 70s.
A little ridge will move into the area on Monday and remain
through Tuesday. Unlike today this ridge will be accompanied by
mdt to strong onshore flow. This means the low clouds will not go
away (although they may be smooshed out the vlys by the higher
hgts) and the temperatures increase will not be that great.

.MARINE...27/837 PM.
High confidence in at least Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds
continuing through late tonight across the waters along the
Central Coast (at least 10 nm from shore) to San Nicolas Island.
Despite observations remaining below Gale force, will keep the
Gale Warning in tact from Point Conception to San Nicolas Island
as models indicate the potential for stronger gusts through
tonight. Have extended the SCA for the Santa Barbara Channel
through 3am as buoy observations are still reporting SCA level
gusts and will likely continue through the evening. Winds will
diminish quickly by Wednesday morning. However, they will likely
pick back up again by Wednesday evening. Widespread SCA level
winds will be likely during the afternoon and evening hours
through the rest of the week. There is a 30% chance that SCA level
winds may extend into the western portion of the waters adjacent
to LA and Orange Counties, likely remaining between Anacapa and
Catalina Islands.
