Area forecast discussion, Apr 26, 12:15 AM PDT, 2 hours 7 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 1215 AM PDT Mon Apr 26 2021 .SYNOPSIS...25/728 PM. There is a chance of light rain across the region through midday Monday and it may linger into the evening over the mountains. Afternoon temperatures will be cool through Monday then will warm to well above normal on Thursday and Friday. Some inland locations could warm into the 90s on Thursday and Friday. && .SHORT TERM (MON-THU)...25/800 PM. Cold upper level low pressure system centered over northern California this evening will track southeastward into Northern Nevada by Monday morning. Associated weak cold front has brought some light rain to the region, mainly from Ventura county northward. As of 8 pm, most of the automated rain gauges have recorded less than 0.10 inches, with a few mountain stations in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties recording between 0.10 and 0.16 inches. An approaching upper level 90 knot jet from the southwest has helped to organize this light precipitation during the past few hours. While much of the forecast area is expected to see less than 0.10 inches through Monday, high resolution model data continues to indicate localized amounts of 0.25 inches or greater across the mountains of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties where there will be enhanced southwest upslope flow. The weak cold front will continue to track southeast overnight, bringing rain chances to LA county. Snow levels are ranging between 5000 and 6000 feet this evening, and are expected to lower to between 4500 and 5500 feet overnight into Monday morning. We could see 1 or 2 inch accumulations above 6000 feet, but not expecting any snow impacts on Interstate 5 near the Tejon Pass. Fairly strong onshore pressure gradients remains in place this evening, along with enhanced southwest upper level flow. As a result, wind advisories remain in effect for the LA county mountains and Antelope Valley through 11 pm, where we have seen wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph today. There will be some lingering light rain chances on Monday across LA county, and the north facing mountains. *** From previous discussion *** On Tuesday, conditions will start to rebound. With more sunshine and weaker onshore gradients, temperatures will begin to rebound across the area. One thing to watch on Tuesday will be some lingering mid-level moisture over the southern mountains. Current forecast has a slight chance of showers Tuesday afternoon over the San Gabriel Mountains which will remain in place. However, models indicate a bit of an increase in instability Tuesday afternoon. So, will need to monitor the potential for isolated thunderstorms over the San Gabriels although current chances of any thunder are below mentionable levels. For Wednesday, upper level ridge will build in from the west as the upper low moves across northern Mexico. Additionally, there will be some weak offshore flow across the area in the morning. So, will expect a noticeably jump in temperatures for the area with many coast and coastal valley areas in the mid 70s to mid 80s. Additionally, there will likely be some localized northeast winds, but speeds will be below advisory levels. .LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...25/130 PM. For the extended period. models continue to exhibit good synoptic agreement. At upper levels, ridge will be entrenched over the area Thursday/Friday then will be flattened/pushed eastward on Saturday and Sunday as a trough moves across the West Coast. Near the surface, weak offshore flow is expected Thursday/Friday with increasing onshore flow Saturday/Sunday. For Thursday/Friday, expect very warm and dry conditions with ridge overhead and weak offshore surface gradients. The ECMWF is slightly more bullish with the ridge and offshore gradients than the GFS, resulting in a slightly warmer forecast. Either way, many areas on Thursday/Friday can expect temperatures in the 80s to mid 90s with slightly cooler conditions near the coast. There will be some weak northeasterly winds on Thursday/Friday, but do not anticipate any advisory-level issues. For Saturday/Sunday, onshore flow will return to the areas as trough moves across the West Coast. So, will anticipate an increase in coastal stratus/fog as well as a noticeable cooling trend. && .AVIATION...26/0714Z. At 0505Z at KLAX, There was no marine layer nor a sfc based inversion. Low confidence in coastal and vly TAFs as marine layer clouds will form and dissipate in a fairly random manor. Continued low confidence after 00Z due to uncertainty in low cloud reformation. KLAX...Low confidence in TAF. Cigs will likely form and dissipate in a random manor through 17Z. Good confidence there will be no cigs lower the BKN012. Better confidence after 17Z with a 30 percent chc of SCT conds.
