Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
755 AM PDT Tue Apr 6 2021
.SYNOPSIS...06/747 AM.
Gusty northwest to north winds will wind prone areas like south
Santa Barbara County and the Antelope Valley through the weekend.
There will be areas of night through morning low clouds and fog
in many coastal and some valley areas through early next week.
Temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees above normal in most areas
away from the immediate coast through early next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-THU)...06/754 AM.
***UPDATE***
Forecast is in good shape this morning with no changes expected.
***From Previous Discussion***
Low clouds and fog were fairly widespread on the Central Coast,
the Santa Ynez Valley, across the interior valleys of SLO County,
and the lower slopes of the SBA and SLO County mountains. South
of Pt Conception, clouds were beginning to become organized
across coastal sections of L.A. County and the San Gabriel Valley,
and portions of the San Fernando Valley. At this point, not to
confident low clouds will make it into Ventura County this
morning, but there will be a slight chance a few patchy low clouds
will develop for a brief time later this morning.
Onshore gradients between KLAX and KDAG were a bit weaker this
morning, so low clouds should clear by afternoon in most areas.
However, low clouds could linger at the beaches on the Central
Coast into the afternoon. However, there will be a fair amount of
high cloudiness across the area today, so it should remain at
partly cloudy in most areas once any low clouds clear.
The pressure gradient between Santa Barbara and Santa Maria was
around -4.0 mb, and NW winds were still gusting to over 50 mph in
a few locations in southern SBA County, mainly through and below
passes and canyons from Refugio westward. Winds will likely drop
below advisory levels for several hours late this morning and
early this afternoon, but with KSBA to KSMX expected to increase
to over 4 mb offshore again this evening, there should be another
around of advisory level winds from late this afternoon through
late tonight mainly from Refugio westward once again. Therefore,
just extended the WIND ADVISORY for the mountains and south coast
of SBA County through late tonight.
While there will be some gusty winds in the Antelope Valley and
through the Highway 14 Corridor this afternoon and evening, expect
winds to remain safely below advisory levels there.
Rising heights and weakening onshore gradients should lead to a
couple of degrees of warming in most areas today.
The upper ridge will amplify across the region tonight and Wed.
The marine layer may shrink in depth a bit, with low clouds likely
to be somewhat less widespread in the valleys. There will likely
still be enough high clouds so that skies will be partly cloudy
through Wed even where there are no low clouds. Expect a couple
more degrees of warming in most areas on Wed.
An upper trough will swing through the Pac NW Wed night and Thu.
This will cause the upper level flow to become more west
northwesterly and increasing in strength over the forecast area.
Heights will fall slightly on Thu, but overall, do not expect much
change in the night through morning low cloud pattern or max
temps for Thu. There will be gusty NW-N winds from the late
afternoon through late night hours Wed and Thu across southern
SBA County, likely requiring advisories both days. On Thu, winds
will likely reach advisory levels in the Antelope Valley and
through the I-5 Corridor.
.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...06/447 AM.
Fairly strong west to northwest flow pattern aloft will continue
across the region into Sat, then the upper flow will weaken. N-S
gradients will likely peak Fri, so expect the strongest winds
across southern SBA County late Fri afternoon thru Fri night,
with strong WIND ADVISORY level or possibly low end HIGH WIND
WARNING level winds there. Also expect advisory level winds in the
Antelope Valley and through the Interstate 5 Corridor on Fri.
Advisory level winds are possible again across southern SBA County
again Sat evening, but they should not be as strong. Expect a bit
of cooling Fri and Sat. For Sun and Mon, the EC suggests little
change in max temps, while the GFS suggests some cooling. At this
point, have kept night thru morning low clouds confined to the
Central Coast and coastal sections of L.A. County and the San
Gabriel Valley, but confidence on the stratus forecast is low.

.AVIATION...06/1201Z.
At 1100z at KLAX...the marine layer depth was around 1200 feet.
The top of the inversion was around 3200 feet with a temperature
of 15 degrees Celsius.
S of Point Conception...High confidence in desert TAFs. Low confidence
with timing of MVFR CIGs across coastal TAFs, with moderate confidence
in Valley TAF sites through 18z. Low confidence with timing with
MVFR CIGs after 04z. Timing could be off 2-4 hours.
N of Point Conception...Moderate confidence with mainly low MVFR
CIGs except IFR CIGs at KPRB through 17-18z. There is a 30% chance
that scour out times could linger and extra 2 hours. Good confidence
for similar stratus conditions tonight into Wednesday morning.
Timing might be off +/- 2 hours. There is a 50% chance that KPRB
will remain VFR early Wed morning.
KLAX... Low confidence in the 12Z TAF in respect of timing of MVFR
CIGS between 13z-18z. Higher confidence with VFR TAFs after that.
Confidence is a little higher that MVFR CIGs will develop between
05-08z this evening. There is a 60% chance of southeast to east
winds to exceed 10 kt between 07z-11z east late this evening into
early Wed morning due to an eddy developing.
KBUR... High confidence in the 12Z TAF through 09Z, then moderate
confidence with the arrival of MVFR CIGS or to a lesser extent,
IFR Cigs.

.MARINE...06/306 AM.
For areas west of the Channel Islands and north of Point Conception,
patchy dense fog with visibility of one nautical mile or less
will continue through this morning.
For the Outer Waters... Northwest GALE WARNING winds will continue
for the two southern zones (PZZ673-676) through mid morning, before
lowering to Small Craft Advisory (SCA) thresholds. Winds have already
lowered to SCA levels for the northern zone (PZZ670) and there is
high confidence that all outer waters will continue to experience
SCA level NW winds through at least Saturday. There could be some
local Gale force gusts Wednesday evening S of Point Conception,
with a higher chance around 50-60% for the entire outer waters
late Friday afternoon through early Saturday morning, especially
from Point Conception to N of San Nicolas Island including the
Channel Islands. There is a good chance that a GALE WATCH will
need to be issued by later shifts for Friday afternoon through
early Saturday morning.
For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal... Intermittent SCA level
winds are likely through Friday, primarily during the afternoon
and evening hours.
For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception... Good confidence
in current SCA. Although the SCA has been extended for the western
portion of the Santa Barbara Channel through 3 AM Wednesday, there
will be a brief time later this morning, when winds lower to below
SCA thresholds before increasing once again this afternoon. Another
chance for SCA level winds develops Wednesday and Thursday afternoon
over western portions with even stronger winds possible Friday
afternoon through the overnight hours.
