Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
548 AM PST Tue Nov 9 2021

.SYNOPSIS...09/233 AM.

A weak cold front will likely bring light rain to areas north of
Ventura this morning. A significant warming trend with gusty
north to northeast winds are expected Wednesday through Saturday.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-THU)...09/308 AM.

The tail end of a cold front is just moving into SLO county. Light
ocnl moderate rainfall will spread over much of SLO county this
morning. Lighter rain will affect SBA county this morning as well.
Rainfall amounts and intensities with this system will be on the
light side except for the typical enhancement across the
northwestern portion of SLO county (especially the foothills near
Hearst Castle). Precipitable water values up to 1.3 inches will
briefly interact with southwest winds of 25-35 mph which will
produce some orographic enhancement of rainfall through mid
morning. Localized rainfall rates between 0.25 and 0.33 inches
per hour are possible from Morro Bay northward...otherwise
rainfall rates should only be around a tenth of an inch per hour.
The latest SREF ensembles forecast SLO rainfall totals to come in
around 0.10 and 0.50 inches, except locally 0.50 to 1.00 inch near
Hearst Castle. SBA county should receive between a trace and 0.20
inches of rainfall, while parts of Ventura county may see a
couple hundredths. Behind the front there is a 20 percent chance
of a lingering shower from Ventura county northward. The clouds
and falling hgts will make todays max temps 3 to 6 degrees cooler
than ydy's.

High pressure will build into the Central Vly this evening and
set up a low end north wind event. Look for 15 to 25 mph winds
with local gusts to 35 mph through the i-5 Corridor, the SBA south
coast and the western foothills of the Antelope Vly.

Low clouds will cover most of the coasts save for the SBA south
coast (due to the north winds). Offshore trends will allow for a
quick clearing and will lead to a sunny day. An upper high nudging
in from the SW will pump hgts up to 587 dam by afternoon. These
hgt rises, sunshine and the offshore trends will all combine to
bring 6 to 12 locally 15 degrees of warming to entire forecast
area.

High pressure will settle into NV on Wednesday night and by dawn
offshore flow will be between 6 and 8 mb from both the north and
the east which will set up a decent Santa Ana wind event. NBM
probabilities agree that this will be an advisory level event with
35 to 55 mph gusts likely in the windy areas either side of the
VTA/LA county line. Earlier in the evening there will be enough of
a north push across SBA county to produce advisory level gusts as
well with a 30 percent chc of warning level gusts in the Montecito
area.

The Moderate Santa Ana will continue through the morning before
weakening to below advisory levels in the afternoon. Offshore flow
will continue through the afternoon despite the diurnal trends
and this will not allow any seabreeze. As a result the coasts will
warm 10 to 15 degrees and the vlys 5 to 10. The interior will not
feel the affects of the compressional warming and will only see 2
to 4 degrees of warming. Most max temps across the csts/vlys will
be in the 80s and some low 90s are not out of the question.

.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...09/323 AM.

The GFS and EC along with their respective ensemble members are in
decent agreement through the xtnd period. In addition the ensemble
spread is fairly tight which leads to above average confidence in
the long term fcst.

Friday will also be an offshore day. The gradients are a little
weaker so the winds will not be as strong but some advisory level
gusts are still likely in the typical Santa Ana prone areas. It
will be a purely NE event so there will not be much wind across
the SBA south coast. There will be onshore trends in the afternoon
and this will bring some cooling to the beaches but the rest of th
area will see other 2 to 4 degrees of warming. Most max temps will
end up about 15 degrees above normal.

Another sunny day is slated for Saturday as the upper high to the
SW remains in control. Still a decent amount of offshore flow in
the morning, but decent onshore trends in the afternoon will bring
cooling to the csts/vlys. The interior may see another 3 to 6
degrees of warming.

The ridge begins to break down on Sunday and the offshore flow
will really weaken. Still enough high pressure and offshore flow
to keep the skies clear, but not enough to keep the temps up. Max
temps will fall 4 to 8 degrees across the board.

Monday will be the first chc to see some marine layer stratus as
the gradients become weakly onshore. Hgts will fall and onshore
flow will increase. This will lead to an additional 4 to 8
degrees of cooling.

&&

.AVIATION...09/1346Z.

At 1230Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 2200 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was around 3500 feet with a temperature of 15C.

Low clouds were widespread across coastal and valley areas of
L.A.. County, and coastal sections of Ventura County. Conds were
mostly MVFR, except IFR in the foothills. A frontal system was
moving across SLO/SBA Counties with some MVFR cigs. Some rain has
pushed into SLO County and will probably affect much of SBA County
before the front dissipates late this morning or this afternoon.
Skies should become partly cloudy in most areas this afternoon,
though there will probably still be some patchy MVFR cigs.

KLAX...Low to moderate confidence in the 12Z TAF. There is a 30%
chance that MVFR cigs could linger well into the afternoon, but
there is also a 20-30% chance that cigs could scatter out by 17Z.
There is a 30% chance that cigs tonight will not arrive until at
least 09Z.

KBUR...Low to moderate confidence in the 12Z TAF. There is a
30-40% chance that cigs could scatter out as early as 16Z. There
is a 30% chance that there will be no low clouds tonight

&&

.MARINE...09/453 AM.

A weakening frontal system will move across the waters this
morning. Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level south winds across the
northern outer waters zone (PZZ670) will shift to west and
decrease below SCA levels by mid morning.

Otherwise, northwest winds will increase across the outer waters
tonight. There is a 30-40% chance of SCA level NW winds across the
southern two outer waters zones (PZZ673/676) by late tonight, then
SCA level NW winds are likely there Wed thru Fri, and possibly
into Sat in zone PZZ673. In the northern outer waters zone, SCA
conds are likely Wed afternoon or evening thru Fri.

Across the inner waters north of Pt Sal, SCA level NW winds are
expected Wed afternoon and evening.

Across the SBA Channel, there is a 30-40% chance of SCA level W
to NW winds across western portions late this afternoon thru late
tonight, and again late Wed afternoon/evening. There is a 30%
chance of SCA level NE winds across eastern sections Thu morning,
and a 20% chance Fri morning.

Across the southern inner waters, there is a 30-40% chance of SCA
level NE winds from Point Mugu to Santa Monica Thu morning, and a
20% chance Fri morning.
